In the southeast United States (Appalachia) glowing mushrooms are locally called "foxfire." The "fox" part is believed to be a corruption of the French word "faux" which means fake or false. Foxfire roughly translated would mean "fake fire" because of the glowing cold light the fungi produce.
Well, we kind of do have that now. They're called LEDs and are pretty much every light bulb that you can buy nowadays. The only heat given off by them is the transformer/ driver that converts 120 volts down to 12 volts or so. However if we supply them with low voltage to begin with there really is no heat given off.
I just discovered some tonight in my backyard on Kauai. At first I wasn't sure if these lights were animal eyes glowing or ???, until I saw a cluster of mushrooms that emitted what looks like a glowing white light. In a photo they look green. These small white mushrooms like the ones in your video grow on Eucalyptus logs here.
I found a bioluminiscent fungus in a cedar tree. It's truly quite amazing. They also used Foxfire in the "Turtle" one man submarine, invented by a Yale student in the mid 1800s. If it had been successful, I'm sure that the fungi would be much better known....
One summer night after a storm I found a large old dead maple tree that had collapsed. The inside was partly hollow and the shattered wood was glowing. I showed it to some neighbors, we all took some of the wood. I put it in the freezer for a week, but it didn't glow when I thawed it out.
I use a quality UV torch when I go traipsing in the forests at night. You have no idea what you will find in the 'glow-zone', glow worms, scorpions, mushrooms, glowing leaves of eucalyptus, eyes of insects, moths and nocturnal animals, some stones, including quartz that glow in the dark, etc.
Well it freaked me out the first time ...in the fall I'm in the woods hunting in my stand and I see these green strobes of light emitting from the leaf fodder...I chalked it up as lightning bugs till I tried to catch one to no avail...so it must be some kind of bioluminescent fungus ...cool thing is u dont need a blacklight or IR to see them..they're plain as day...I'm in the Mid Atlantic region around Chesapeake bay
Damn I thought you was going to show us a bunch of footage of glowing mushrooms. All we got was three brief flashes of the glowing mushrooms and the rest was a damn unwanted class mainly about glowing jellyfish!
Please .. tell me in what online shop have this bioluminescent mushroom becuase i want to have this kind unique things and also i'd like to display it to my room also ❤❤
Wow.....that is a first......can you eat them.......do you glow after eating them.........double wow......what substrate where they growing on?........do more....names......geo regions? .......cheers
I use to play glowing mushroom when i was a kid and bringing into my room and my grandma telling me not to play those things because its owned by elemental spirit.
I no a type of plant called peacock begonia and they grow in rain forests so they need a way to survive so they make there own light and in the dark there so beautiful because they glow in a way a beautiful blue that looks like a morpho wing
I don’t like those mushrooms as much as puffball mushrooms in fact I even had a dream about them and my dad dug it up like he did with a weed that I liked and the weed was called corn speedwell and in the dream puffballs would make flowers that looked exactly like lilac flowers and I loved it😀
Funny I was wondering the same thing. She's talking about glowing mushrooms, and all I'm thinking is "Where on earth do women actually look like this?" Even for upscale LA they are both ridiculously gorgeous.
No. They don't have to use up the oxygen in their surroundings. If there was no oxygen, the reaction would NOT work. Basically, they only glow in the presence of oxygen.
This is realy a question going out to anyone that are willing to help me understand. why wod the mushroom have this abillity ? what is the advantage for the shroom itself ? and how can this happen threw evolution ? i mean going from a none glowing shroom and then "figuring out" (over million and millions of years yes i know) that glowing is a the the hot trend to do ? thank you kindly for your attention
Good question Kim. Jonas Stenstrom , do you have a good answer to this. Right now I can't think of a good evolutionary advantage for the glowing mushroom phenomenon. Louise Fornander , maybe you've thought about this more as well.
It is a good question Kim and there is still no final answer unfortunately. There are a couple of theories though but they feel kind of basic. The first one being that the light would help attract organisms that could help spread spores etc. The second one being the complete opposite and suggesting the light would discourage organisms to approach and damage/eat the mushrooms. I wish I had a better answer but if you ever find out more, please let us know!
Jonas Stenstrom are you kidding me boddy, im a baker ... you know how much yeast i have to eat to just get the basic understanding of how a fungus growes/workes ... naah im only joking.. i tank you Jonas and you Untamed sciens for your attention and willingnes to help, but on the other hand this leaves 1 point to the people suporting "intelligent desigehn theory" and im not much of a suporter of that lighen of belife ... so i guess we all just lost one for the team :) lol ... have a grate upcomming weekend
If you eat magic shrooms you would figure out that evolution theory is a myth. The reason why they are illigal is so that people could stay at the current level of perception and wouldn't be able to have a clear understanding of how badly they are brainwashed about all kinds of aspects of our life. Of course you could change your perception without the aid of psychedelics and the method is very simple but again they are the aid or tools that help to get there faster. Learn from nature and don't believe everything that science teach you and one day you will understand why these mushrooms have this ability or why anything has some kind of ability.
When you eat those, your battery will be recharged. :v
Then Robocop stick mushroom up his ass on "Robot vs Wild" :T
There are orange bioluminescent ones that will make you throw up with unbelievable force for hours or days. Don't eat things you don't know.

Came here for mushrooms. Ended up learning about Asian Santa Claus.
I used to have this mushrooms in my backyard
Wow, really? What area do you live in?
He lives in chernobyl
That's awesome! It would be cool if we could use cold lights in our houses so we don't have overheating problems or fire risks.
Well, we kind of do have that now. They're called LEDs and are pretty much every light bulb that you can buy nowadays. Agree! That would be awesome. Did you know though that they used bioluminescent mushrooms in really early submarines? :-)
Fireflies use ATP, mushrooms use NADPH to get light emission.
What would we need to eat to get this effect?
@@warlocksden idk, like CRISPR all epithelial cells :) xD
"I licked myself the other day to see what the big deal was, and everything started glowing blue"
-Truffle
Terraria truffle got high.
That truffle guy is hilarious.

Yep. Great Job!
Thank you so much for this most educational video! I´m sharing it on both my edublogs as well as on Facebook!
There are so many beautiful and amazing things this planet has to offer. A night club or finding glowing mushrooms? I say mushrooms❤️
Part2: ruclips.net/video/Z4u5COwsdtc/видео.html
I live in Maine and found small glowing mushrooms in late September.
you can get nucluer mats from that to make at your chem station.
i saw a thing glowing in my backyard last night and it was a glowing mushroom.
I saw a thing glowing in my room.
It was a monster that glowed;)
You should collect and grow some and have a cool night light.
@@dilo9277 Thinking about trying this now actually.
Wait for them to produce spores

Glowing Fungi and Neon Toadstools are The BEST in Cartoons
What u find interesting is that it does not generate heat.
That's some trippy ass Avatar shit.
Wow they haven't tought me this in school see I learn more from internet than school
Can't wait for the next Avatar movie. James Cameron is such an enthusiast of deep sea exploration.
Didn’t know Santa Claus was a thing in Singapore. Thanks for clearing that up
Damn I thought you was going to show us a bunch of footage of glowing mushrooms. All we got was three brief flashes of the glowing mushrooms and the rest was a damn unwanted class mainly about glowing jellyfish!
I don't suppose eating these glowing mushrooms, would, oh I don't know, recharge my batteries?
This is awesome Jonas! Fantastic.
yesterday I found same bioluminescent mushroom in my house. It was on a wet bamboo roof. thank you for your information.
From,
Assam, India 🇮🇳
Could I use some of this footage for a biotechnology educational video?
That was awesome.
Please .. tell me in what online shop have this bioluminescent mushroom becuase i want to have this kind unique things and also i'd like to display it to my room also ❤❤
How do i get my hands on these can they be home grown
Did you find out how to get them
@@jamebutter7049 yeah dig underground until you get to the caverns layer, then do strip mining until you Struck the glowing mushroom area
When I was young I used to pick mushrooms from our backyard just to see them glow at night.
I cant help but think Fallout 4 lookin at these.
Yes
Fallout fans when they realize glowing mushrooms are real

I like weird science of anything.
I saw something glowing in the dark (my bro ignites his farts with a lighter )
im not really a science person but this was really cool
Anything that excites electrons are fine by me!
I wish I had found this part of Singapore. Much better than orchard street.
Here from Etho anyone?
yep
VoxelFusion lol me too
VoxelFusion yeah
VoxelFusion, You know it ;)
Yep me too :)
Tfw you find the glowing mushrooms but their theme doesn't start immediately playing.

for a moment i thought the the text on the thumb nail was " GLOWING FUNG!!!!"
it fully recharge you battery when u eat one
So. The terraria glowing mushrooms are real?
Thanks but it was definitely a combined effort between both Louise and Jonas.
This should have been added in minecraft 1.17
Why is no one talking about this in 2023
I don’t like those mushrooms as much as puffball mushrooms in fact I even had a dream about them and my dad dug it up like he did with a weed that I liked and the weed was called corn speedwell and in the dream puffballs would make flowers that looked exactly like lilac flowers and I loved it😀
when i was a kid i saw one glowing mushroom, now searching for it, i cant find one
It was missed the theory as to why some fungi glow it is thought its used to attract pollinating insects.
Glowing things absolutely satisfy me. I like glowing corals and stuff but deep in the ocean with those monster looking fish, nah I'm good...
Nice video, very informative. Are the two people brother and sister? They have similar jaw lines and hair, and are both tremendously good-looking :)
No, actually they're just Swedish (and married). :)
Funny I was wondering the same thing. She's talking about glowing mushrooms, and all I'm thinking is "Where on earth do women actually look like this?" Even for upscale LA they are both ridiculously gorgeous.
I am here after study iq video. It's found in Meghalaya, India also.
Is it like glow sticks?
pretty cool!!!
Terraria!
Of course it was. I just meant, good Job jonas for posting this one. I can only assume Louise did all the work on this one. It shows... :)
Eat it
+OMGbaconBitz :-)
Did you know if you eat them they will recharge any batteries in your inventory lol .....game reference hope sum of y'all get it
i wonder if use these light walkways and paths through woods? helpful maple syrup time
my batteries recharge when i eat those?
Remember these mushrooms don't recharge your batteries 😂😅.
Light bulbs don't emit light because they get really hot.
I'm not good for chemistry but does this mean the mushroom are actually exhausting the oxygen serrounding itself?
No. They don't have to use up the oxygen in their surroundings. If there was no oxygen, the reaction would NOT work. Basically, they only glow in the presence of oxygen.
Untamed Science I see and thanks a lot for your explanation and that really help me understand a lot. :)
What is scientifical name
Can I grow these in my overworld?
Hi. Do you have any email address where I could communicate with you?
the GFP is a completely different story. It is purely fluorescent, not bioluminescent
This is realy a question going out to anyone that are willing to help me understand.

Satan's mushrooms! I guess one can't eat them than x)
