    In the southeast United States (Appalachia) glowing mushrooms are locally called "foxfire." The "fox" part is believed to be a corruption of the French word "faux" which means fake or false. Foxfire roughly translated would mean "fake fire" because of the glowing cold light the fungi produce.

      Well, we kind of do have that now. They're called LEDs and are pretty much every light bulb that you can buy nowadays. The only heat given off by them is the transformer/ driver that converts 120 volts down to 12 volts or so. However if we supply them with low voltage to begin with there really is no heat given off.

    I just discovered some tonight in my backyard on Kauai. At first I wasn't sure if these lights were animal eyes glowing or ???, until I saw a cluster of mushrooms that emitted what looks like a glowing white light. In a photo they look green. These small white mushrooms like the ones in your video grow on Eucalyptus logs here.

    I found a bioluminiscent fungus in a cedar tree. It's truly quite amazing. They also used Foxfire in the "Turtle" one man submarine, invented by a Yale student in the mid 1800s. If it had been successful, I'm sure that the fungi would be much better known....

    • @UntamedScience

      No. They don't have to use up the oxygen in their surroundings. If there was no oxygen, the reaction would NOT work. Basically, they only glow in the presence of oxygen.

    This is realy a question going out to anyone that are willing to help me understand.
    why wod the mushroom have this abillity ? what is the advantage for the shroom itself ? and how can this happen threw evolution ? i mean going from a none glowing shroom and then "figuring out" (over million and millions of years yes i know) that glowing is a the the hot trend to do ?
    thank you kindly for your attention

    • @UntamedScience
      @UntamedScience  11 лет назад

      Good question Kim. Jonas Stenstrom , do you have a good answer to this. Right now I can't think of a good evolutionary advantage for the glowing mushroom phenomenon. Louise Fornander , maybe you've thought about this more as well.

    • @jonasstenstrom6553
      @jonasstenstrom6553 11 лет назад

      It is a good question Kim and there is still no final answer unfortunately. There are a couple of theories though but they feel kind of basic. The first one being that the light would help attract organisms that could help spread spores etc. The second one being the complete opposite and suggesting the light would discourage organisms to approach and damage/eat the mushrooms. I wish I had a better answer but if you ever find out more, please let us know!

    • @mr.rasmussen7911
      @mr.rasmussen7911 11 лет назад

      Jonas Stenstrom are you kidding me boddy, im a baker ... you know how much yeast i have to eat to just get the basic understanding of how a fungus growes/workes ... naah im only joking.. i tank you Jonas and you Untamed sciens for your attention and willingnes to help,
      but on the other hand this leaves 1 point to the people suporting "intelligent desigehn theory" and im not much of a suporter of that lighen of belife ... so i guess we all just lost one for the team :) lol ... have a grate upcomming weekend

    • @RUS38
      @RUS38 10 лет назад +1

      If you eat magic shrooms you would figure out that evolution theory is a myth. The reason why they are illigal is so that people could stay at the current level of perception and wouldn't be able to have a clear understanding of how badly they are brainwashed about all kinds of aspects of our life. Of course you could change your perception without the aid of psychedelics and the method is very simple but again they are the aid or tools that help to get there faster. Learn from nature and don't believe everything that science teach you and one day you will understand why these mushrooms have this ability or why anything has some kind of ability.
