    Keith, you are right!, three good points!
    They have been considered during the course of the project:
    1. Plants have been kept short by sheep and goats after the initial learning phase of the project shown here.
    2. Black plastic was installed during test operation to increase solar energy absorption
    3. Water collection was planned but not realized on a large scale for cost reasons. Still, the effects of condensation have been included in the simulation tools.

      This is a viable cocept with modern tech upgrades this could be very good. instead of black plastic bags. now a days they would probably use a concrete floor to store heat and painted with fanta black wich absorbs 99.98 percent of like and transforms it into heat. with a vortex on the top of the chimney you could lower the pressure on top even more. Lets add Electron stripping and this thing could be massive efficient.

    also, at the top of the tower, if there was a right-angle swiveling elbow for the exhaust to be released in the direction of the wind, the wind will create a vacuum that will pull the air from tube as well

    I love the last sentence, which says it all:
    "This solar chimney in Spain has demonstrated that it will be possible in the future to compete on a dollar for dollar basis with virtually any other form of power generation - with that 1 unbeatable advantage: that its got an inexhaustable source of free, original, energy in the Sun."

  • @unknownkw
    @unknownkw 8 лет назад +5

    Keep in mind that the entire action is powered by buoyancy. Hot air or water vapour has less density compared to ambient air and It's this difference in mass of the air inside the chimney and the ambient air that generate the mechanical force. Humid air actually greatly increases the power output as water vapour is almost half the mass of atmospheric air. Many ways to make this more powerful: by building a chimney with greater internal volume, better insulation to prevent heat loss in the chimney, a way to remove the fog condensed inside the chimney, and shape it like a funnel to increase the airspeed through the turbine but slow down within the chimney.

    I don't understand why they don't:
    1. Remove all plants underneath because they slow the air down.
    2. Use black plastic to line the ground so as too re-radiate it as heat and cause the air to travel faster.
    3. Collect and remove any dew (possibly save for drinking water) that forms over night because evaporation and or plant respiration makes the air cooler and more heavy thus slowing air down in the tower.

      light will be able enter and help the plants grow, which in turn convert co2 to oxygen making it even more beneficial

    • @KyleAndRyanProgram
      @KyleAndRyanProgram 6 лет назад +3

      When air is warmed it becomes less dense(expands), and so it rises above cooler, more dense, air.
      There is friction between moving air and any surface which will act to impede the flow near the surface. This is called the laminar flow effect.
      Also when air is warmed it becomes more viscous (“sticky/gooey”), rather than less - a behavior that is exactly the opposite of most familiar materials.
      When air is in contact with a hot surfce, these properties act together to produce a layer of viscous low-density air that “sticks” to the surface. This is called the boundary layer effect, and its thickness depends on the temperature at the surface/air interface.

    • @Kevin-jb2pv

      Part of the concept here is to be as low-cost and simple as possible. The plants over so wide an area likely isn't that big a deal.

  • @basecius
    @basecius 15 лет назад +1

    The air under the canopy is heated. Some of it enters the tower. When in the tower, it will lift and suck in more hot air into the tower. When starting, some hot air will escape att the outer edge, but as opposed to the air in the tower, it won't keep sucking out more hot air. When the process is up and running, most of the hot air will get sucked into the tower.

    It doesn't produce as much power as photovoltaics, but it makes constant power. Made out of tempered glass with anodized aluminum frames this thing could run decades upon decades longer than a photovoltaic panel with very minimal maintenance. It can be combined with pasture land or cereal crop fields for power/farming use.

    • @drgeoffangel5422
      @drgeoffangel5422 Год назад

      @@joealbarella2493 The speed of the airflow across the turbines relates to the power that can be generated in any one tower. If you add turbines above the first one , you will reduce the speed of the air rising in the tower and thus the power produced. However , if you were to have more than one tower, say a ring of five towers and all fed by the same, or larger ground collector, and each with its own turbine generator unit, then providing that you have sufficient ground area to collect the air to feed the multiple towers you will gain the advantage of more power. If I were designing a multiple tower system, I would have each tower controlled according to the amount of air flowing into the area where the towers are, thus during the day , all 5 towers may be fed with sufficient air flow, but some could be shut down according the amount of air flowing in the system, say at night when there may be less air flow. Also in a multiple tower system , the total land required may only be slightly larger , if at all for one. Furthermore, you will have redundancies for maintenance outages, with no loss of power as other towers in the group could be running.

      These are horribly inefficient in terms of area utilized. A comparable area of conventional PV modules would generate an order of magnitude or more electricity without the need for a giant chimney in the middle of the site.

    • @Spacekriek
      @Spacekriek 3 года назад +2

      @@randacnam7321 You raise a valid point in terms of the area used. I still do see some practical application for it because of the low tech solution it provides, especially for countries like my own (South Africa). We also have vast open swathes of land and get a lot of sunshine. The greenhouse effect is another advantage, utilizing the area under the plastic cover for food crops. It would be interesting comparing this aspect with a normal solar farm where you will have mostly shade beneath the panels.

  • @noobystok
    @noobystok 16 лет назад +1

    Because black plastic would absorb the light (heat) as opposed to just letting it through to heat the ground (which through radiant heat heats the air) and air which then rises due to the properties of physics, and then moves through the tower which turns the turbine generator.

  • @lazyperfectionist1
    @lazyperfectionist1 16 лет назад +1

    So then the air is drawn under the canopy by the force of air being drawn up the tower, and that force is being generated by the heat from the sun being trapped inside the tower?

  • @purplemutantas
    @purplemutantas 13 лет назад +1

    This is fantastic! I bet you could also grow crops of some kind under the plastic. It would make for a more efficient use of the space. I hope to see these used in the real world to supply electricity.

  • @lazyperfectionist1
    @lazyperfectionist1 15 лет назад +2

    But in order for that to do any good, the canopy would still have to be higher around the base of the tower than around its outer edge or the rising air would simply escape over the edge of the canopy, unless the air inside the tower is also being heated, and therefore is rising, causing a vacuum which draws in the air from under the canopy, which, being heated, contributes to the lift effect.

The initial cost might be a little higher, especially if a stronger, higher quality glass is used -- but this should be offset by the longer lifespan.

    It`s wrong. Your calculculation is based on the cost of the non-renewable energy, which is the cost of the coal or the oil + mainteinance of the power plant. This tower`s TOTAL cost is about $ 1.000.000 to construct, but after constructed it`s almost for free the cost of the energy (compared whit oil or coal). To make your calculation, you have to spread the tower`s cost among 10 or 15 years, with the generation of the average energy produced(15-30 kW). I hope have solved your dude.

      AVERAGE power, you would need probably about 150 kWp photovoltaics for the same yield at this location.
      But you are right, 1 million dollars is too much, even for average power of 30 kW.
      But it's just a small demonstration plant. These plants have to be big for cost effective power production. 200-MW-plants should achieve power production costs of 80 euros per MWh. This would be not bad, comparable to wind power or photovoltaics on very sunny locations.

      When it comes to energy economics there are two very different metrics to consider.
      1) Cost per killowatt of generating capacity: This is the upfront cost very much like it cost you between $500 to $1000 to buy a 2kw generator from the store.
      2) Cost per kilowatt hour: This is very much like adding in the cost of fuel, maintenance and replacement parts as well as the investors ROI through out the life of the 2kw generator and dividing the total cost by how many kilowatts are expected to be generated.
      When they throw around numbers like that, I am not sure if they are actual cost or they deceptively excluded the cost of subsidies, but issue aside, if we assume actual cost then he is saying it cost about $1,000,000 for the ability to produce a maximum of 60kw or an averaged of 30kw. That is $1 million for 30kw for average production capacity is not $1 million 30kwh of produced energy.
      Averaging 30kw every hour for 10 years the tower should produce around 2.62 trillion watt hours. Where with your generator the fuel is an ongoing operational cost, the tower gets its energy from the sun for free, but it has to replace all the plastic every 10 years, maintenance cost. Unfortunately, I don't know the other cost to calculate an average kilowatt hour cost.

    in Spain.. its hot.. and so heavy air that you can barly breath.. and I don't understand how people at Spain can live.. it sucks so bad there..
    even at 2 at night, there was just families walking around at night with their 3-5 years old children.. I mean.. is that even human?
    and even there's a lot of robbery going on there.. Spain just makes me sick.. if I would buy a PS3, and walk with the PS3 box to my house there, how many chances would it be that I would get robbed? I'd say about 98%

    Again, you just didn't went to a proper place!! =) But if I would have to say about any food that it "tastes like a pile of dog shit", I would say it about fast food. And it's not that people from other countries are rich and we're poor, it's that people from other countries have more acquisitive power. But politicians are to blame!!
