This is probably the best playing record in my collection. Couldn't believe how little noise accompanied this recording. Maria Alba plays the castinets. Enjoy!
This song brings back wonderful memories for me. My mom was a concert pianist and played this song for me when I was a youngster. Always loved the tempo of this song. Almost 79 years later, I still get chills thinking about mom and this song. Mom is long gone but great memories last forever.
What a great record. When I was eleven years old, in (very conservative) Catholic school, we had to get up individually and sing a song and be graded on it. A funny kid named Georgie, who always knew how to push a button two, got up and started in on "Hernando's Hideway". With a young boy smirk upon his face, he sang "..A glass of wine, a fast embrace.." Sister was not pleased. In fact she was outraged! (Hey, it was 1954..)
Haha that's fantastic! This wouldn't happen to have been in an Irish Catholic school, at all? When I read about the sister's anger, in my head, she was shouting in an Irish accent.
Oh my, that wouldn't have gone over well not even in my Italian catholic neighborhood school at that time! Ahhh those nuns, gotta love their principles of life! LOL
hi Jim. I really liked the melody, and even more - you answer ) But the thing is that I got the point, but still missed some kind of idioms , I believe? can you please explain me those ? it's kinda interesting for me, since English is not my first language. thanks a lot to you and anyone else assisting.
My father and mother along with my older brother Tommy and I in 1955 drove from San Francisco to Boston and back and wherever we stopped at a roadside diner on our trip I would be the first to put a dime into the jukebox to play the song twice. Such great memories music can evoke in all of us.
Wonderful music Remembered this from my childhood! My daughter is profoundly disabled and went to a special school where they had a special disc of assorted music for Parachute games. THIS was one of them She loved it so much they made a copy and gave it to us. We often play it in the car and this never fails to make her smile and laugh! Thank you!
Lyrics I know a dark, secluded place A place where no one knows your face A glass of wine, a fast embrace It's called Hernando's Hideaway, Olé All you see are silhouettes And all you hear are castanets And no one cares how late it gets Not at Hernando's Hideaway, Olé At the Golden Finger Bowl or anyplace you go You will meet your Uncle Max and everyone you know But if you go to the spot that I am thinking of You will be free to gaze at me and talk of love Just knock three times and whisper low That you and I were sent by Joe Then strike a match and you will know You're in Hernando's Hideaway, Olé Just knock three times and whisper low That you and I were sent by Joe Then strike a match and you will know You're in Hernando's Hideaway
I just found this RUclips, 12 years later. I have this same 78 record and it plays as quiet and robustly as yours here. It’s my favorite recording of the song and the castanets are fantastic. Thanks for the great video.
I sang this as part of a medley in elementary school. I just found out that my husband learned the same medley in high school. We probably sang it at the same city-wide concert and didn't know each other!
We used to have fun in Sunday School singing the words of the doxology (Praise God from whom all blessings flow, etc.) to this tune. It even fits at the end; instead of Ole!, it's Amen!
I just saw a movie clip on youtube where this was sung but i dont know what the movie was! So thank you for this! I remember hearing this as a child, im 68 now.
Grew up w/ my mom playing THIS version and I've been looking for it ever since!! She wouldn't show me her records so I could get the artist and name info, so every so often the song would creep back up and I'd be so frustrated that I STILL didn't know what it was called! THANK YOU!!
What a great tune. It just popped into my head & so I searched for it under 'Fernando's Hideaway'. So for years I've been singing the wrong words. Ahhhhhhh.
i remember this from when i was a kid, mom wouldnt let me listen to it cuz it was dirty..lol.. thank you for posting it, i have always wanted to actually hear the whole song
We had this record when I was a kid but the flood of 94 ruined it. I enjoyed dancing to this song even though I definitely wasn't doing a proper tango!
I have the same feelings.I used to listen and ask the meaning of the lyrics to my parents.I've lost father on 4th of Dec.2018 and mom on 4th of May,2020.Let them rest in peace in their hide-away at our hometown.
I was dreaming of this song, I woke up with this song in my mind... In short my dream lead me here. By the way I love the old fashion VFX transition betwen the standstill vinyl and the playing one.
I was born a year after this song was released and when I would state my name as a little boy folks would sing "Fernando's Hideway", So for all these years I thought it was Fernando's Hideaway!

Thanks for the uploaded you made a very old man (my grandad) very happy today. He said he used to sing this with a girl called Taffy Jenkins out and about along time ago. And he said how he also used to have lots of record's when he was younger. He met my nan, and when him and my nan had their first flat they were stored at my nans adoptive parents. Then when grandad and Nan got their own house and nans foster parents passed away they were lost. He always talks about this song in particular and he hadn't heard it in ages so this made him happy when I found it and played it . It was nice to see him so happy and sing along.
When I was very little my parents would play the Pajama Game album over the outdoor PA system at the lake resort we owned in the Catskills when they were working outdoors. I remember this song, also "Seven and a half cents doesn't mean a heckofalot..." I also remember some of the songs from South Pacific ("Gonna wash that man right outta my hair") album. I was about 6 -7.
I sung this song in primary school for choir. It feels a little different hearing this version as opposed to the cover we were given to sing along with
I completely forgot all about this song. Our chorus in high school performed this in 1983. SHOUT OUT TO R and B diva JAZMINE SULLIVAN for her BUST YOUR WINDOWS song which led me here!
I guess everyone here already listened to this song but this is my first time listening to this. I discovered this song not with YT algorithm or sone recommendations, I heard this song in my lucid dreams few mins ago. I woke up and had to look this up thinking the song really exist or it's just some melody I hear in my dream. Fascinating it's not the first time happening like this.
I was in junior high.. LoL.. wow been a long time gone.. and when I heard it I was back in the 8th grade.. and I could even remember the names of those I went to school with..
I saw this performed on "The Hit Parade". That was prior to 1957 I believe so I was less than 10. The 'smutty' parts wherever they were still go over my head.
Dang🙄that song is stuck in me haid😝 But it has a great melody. Something about it is magical🤗, like "Those were the days my friend" (Mary Hopkins) magical. Yeah, I'm an old fella😝
Great recording tnx. Before my time I discovered this song from when Katarina Witt skated to it in her 87 gala performances. So now I've learnt to play it on guitar. Odd how art works.
I was actually looking for a place called Fernando's Hideaway, a restaurant in Portugal and I ended up bumping into this the song I had never heard. I'm 62 years old.
Haha me and my sister first heard this on my grandpa's radio in his car and we loved it we thought it was so funny! they just don't make music like this anymore.
He founded Cadence - Brought along a lot of great performers. He's the voice of "Mr. Sandman" in the Chordettes hit where he slips in the "Yeeesss" to their prompt, "Mr. Sandman?" Archie: "Yeeeess!?" He put Andy Williams on the map, too. Great arranger, too.

Nice anecdote. :) :)

Dang! 12 years already! Found this song on RUclips when I was 8-9 years old. Amazing!
I remember my father whenever I hear this song, he loves this music with tango dancing, all the while I thought the title was Fernando's hideaway
Haha, I also thought it was Fernando
Puede ser la que.ando buscando
I'm 66 and when I heard this song in a store, I dovaguely remember hearing this song eons ago.

There was an alternate set of words that ended with Oy Vay!
I just saw a movie clip on youtube where this was sung but i dont know what the movie was! So thank you for this!

Fabulous! Brings back childhood memories! This is a great recording, no scratches. Thank you so very much for sharing this! It's iconic!
What a great tune. It just popped into my head & so I searched for it under 'Fernando's Hideaway'. So for years I've been singing the wrong words. Ahhhhhhh.
Haven't heard this song in ages. Thanks for posting.
For a 1954 78 Record, it sounds so clear. GREAT!
Love this song. Never know its name until today.

i love this song! they play it a couple of times a month on my AM oldies radio station.
I am here to listen because I just learned this was one of Maria Callas' favorite tunes when she was a kid.
I like this song and Maria Callas’ singing songs very much!
I remember as a small child hearing this on my parents' kitchen radio.
Same here; what a terrific memory, my mom loved this kind of music; music you could have fun with! What a pure joy!

My dad had this in his collection, used to dance around the room to this and others.Great to hear again.
I was born a year after this song was released and when I would state my name as a little boy folks would sing "Fernando's Hideway", So for all these years I thought it was Fernando's Hideaway!

The doxology! Another good text to sing to it is Robert Frost's "Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening."
Thank you. A great song from an excellent Musical.

Number two song for 1954.
Thanks for posting!
I used to kitchen dance to this tune with my little girls. We all loved it!
This song is from the 1954 Broadway show "The Pajama Game" produced by Jerry Ross & Richard Adler.
I loved this song from "Pajama Game."
YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT THAT I ALSO THOUGHT IT WAS FERNANDO'S HIGHAWAY
Never knew Archie Bleyer had an orchestra and chorus. Thought he was an A&R man for Cadence. The things you learn.
@@gladtobeopenminded ...and he was married to one of the Chordettes.
Oh come and dance with me, my baby. Let's dance till we go crazy...

I was in Pajama Game and we sang this song!!!
So wonderful
Getting in the kink club back in the day was a beast!!!
The art of dying by George Harrison brought me here.
