Miss the sea. At over 80 years old and handicap I am land locked. These videos help with memories and sometimes my Grandchildren learn a little about sailing. That is when they find time to watch a few minutes.
Hi, I'm also a seafarer, a naval electrician, and Cape Verde🇨🇻 is my country, and I'm also from the island of São Vicente where you received the bunker. I really liked your video and your comment about my country, it was also a shame you didn't dock at the pier, as I'm sure you would love it, the people are very friendly and welcoming
Thanks for being a professional individual on your top shelf industry chief please take a bow and many kudos to you sir from a normal human being with no skills of this industry I salute you chief God bless you !!!
Including so many crew to willingly appear in videos is wonderful - I imagine their family and friends appreciate seeing them working hard, laughing and smiling.
You are a true inspiration for all engine room seafarers who love to learn and importantly share knowledge. I've followed you as a cadet and now as a maritime engineer and continue your footsteps in sharing knowledge. Success and nothing else Chief.
Congratulations on pursuing your higher education. Thanks to you and all the other mariners out there who sacrifice their time at home with families to keep the world supplied with all the products of modern life!
Glad your crew members had a chance to be in this video so their family and friends could see them. I too had never heard of Cape Verde, although I stopped in the Azores, to the north of Cape Verde, many years ago. Thanks for the brief introduction. Love from Liz and Ginger (pic left) in Australia.
This is the Chief Makoi Autobiography we all get to see document in real life. Cheers to the sim card vendors. And a cold 🍺for all the smiles from the crew. Fair winds, friends.
That’s the beauty of being at the ship you can really see the view of the island as a whole and it’s beautiful . Thanks for sharing chief. Greetings from Canada 🇨🇦. Safe sailing . 🚢⛴🛳
Thanks for mention my country Chief!!! I've been a long time follower of the Channel!!! Keep up the good spirit!!! A great inspiration for all mariners and specially for us marine engineers!!!!💪💪💪
Chief MAKOi, you always amaze me with stories of your dedication to your industry, your education and those that know you personally are the lucky ones. I feel lucky enough to have your RUclips channel in my life as well!
I generally enjoy your videos, especially the technical information. I am a retired electrical/electronic engineer with many years experience with railroad equipment. (I thought locomotives had big engines. Ha Ha) In this video we learned about a typical fueling stop on the high seas. I also have to complement you on one of the most pleasant and informative "commercial" messages, for at MLA College. I am not planning further higher education but you did show us a good opportunity for anyone who is interested. Thank You!
Off of the subject of the video, just wanted to let you know of a ferry boat incident that occurred in Greece the other day. A passenger had disembarked from the ferry to retrieve an item on the dock. He barely made it on board by running up the vehicular ramp where he was greeted by two crew members. Video shows he was confronted in an unprofessional manner. He was eventually pushed off of the car ramp as the boat launched from the dock and into the water. Short order, he was dragged under and was hit by the prop killing him. From news reports the ship was halfway out the waterway of Piraeus when the captain was ordered back to port. The two "deck hands", first officer and Captain were detained. Not sure how the ferry was allowed to leave but probably another captain and first officer were pulled from another ship. Upon arrival to Heraklion Crete, passengers were further detained on board since protesters had gathered on the dock and were ready to storm the ship. It’s been reported the deck hands were being charged with murder and captain and first officer for dereliction of duty. Rules state here in Greece that the passenger walkways an car ramps must be fully retracted and secured before the vessel May move. In all the years I have lived here and all of the departures I have witnessed the ramps have never been stowed completely before the vessel departs. They can be several hundred meters out from the dock before the car ramp is fully secured. There is also an investigation underway as to why the coast guard who is responsible for safety issues of dockside incidents was not present when this happened. As for the vessel involved, it’s name is the BLUE HORIZON which is owned by ANEK Lines of Crete. There should be additional info on the internet.
So glad you're posting these excellent video's again, Chief! Good luck on your masters degree; that will be another wonderful achievement in your career. From Dallas, TX.
Always memorable going through Island groups or up rivers, especially if one can be on deck and not "down in the hole", thanks for sharing the brief visit and I hope the family and friends of the crew get a kick out of seeing them...
Thank you for sharing your life at sea my dad was in the navy and I regret not following in his foot steps I enjoy listening to your adventures thanks again chief safe travels
Chief MAKOi, when I watch your videos and other merchant marine shopping videos I follow when you all mention where you are on the globe I was do a search & open maps of each, Cape Verde is just west of the African continent then I to do some reading on the history of the area so Thank You for helping me learn more about the different places you visit or pass through, may you & your shipmates Be & Stay Well along the way.
Chief - Really enjoy your videos. Good for you working on the masters degree. I'm a retired mechanical engineer who was a land lubber - but worked with/for one guy who graduated from the US Maritime Academy and thus had sea stories. I have two masters - one done in residence over two years, the other distance learning in the pre-internet days. I know how it can get hard at times, but keep with it. I'm sure you will as you are open enough in the videos I'm judging your life journey will include new changes and responsibilities. Keep up the good work and educating us - especially the ones who have never experienced the sea faring life.
I think it's great that the guy's want to be in your video's, plus it would give their families a chance to see them doing their job's, which would be good if they have children. I would think missing the little fellas and fellets would be hard, because they grow so fast, and being a role model from a distance has got to be tough at time's. G-d bless all of you, and see you next time.
I remember vividly taking Bunker C as a cadet. That smell brings back instant memories. As an engineer, sounding HFO tanks is a real treat. I don’t know how to do it and stay clean.
Cape Verde has changed so much for the better. When i sailed into Mindelo 35 years ago there was a red cross ship in the harbour, and the place was quite run down, the people were friendly mostly, but some of the "boat boys" on the beach could be aggressive. My last port of call before crossing the Atlantic and arriving in Martinique.
Hello chief, so sorry to see that you weren't able to actually visit the beautiful island I live on. Being at Santo Antão and enjoying your stack of videos! Greetings Johan Bosua from SA, Cape Verde.
I've followed you for a while because of your life aboard ships videos and I'm extremely happy to see my country in your video (I was born and raised in Mindelo but live in the US). Wish you could've had a chance to experience Mindelo and it's night life.

Chief, have you looked into Starlink Maritime for your internet connection? Not sure of the cost but if most of the hands share the expense it might be a better option.
Starlink Maritime is way too expensive.(50 GB: 287 Euro/Month,1 TB: 1128 Euro/Month) Normal Starlink should be way sufficient. but I guess Elon will not allow the constant movement of the location?
Always a pleasure Chief, thank you for taking us along. Btw, have you considered a StarLink internet internet access? My thought would be that crew-members would be happy to share the cost.

Always love to see bunkering operations, often see them on cruise ships. Do you ever use Airalo for esim?. I use them, seems an inexpensive option instead of physical SIM cards.Unlock your phone and pay $4 for a week in a place like Norway, or England etc. Thanks Chief.
I can't believe how much Sao Vincente has changed since HMS Minerva spent a few days there in 1970! Back then it was a small, isolated and very run down Portuguese colony. Wrecks littered the approaches to the harbour, water was scarce, and electrical supply sporadic. The people lived in poverty, in shacks. Only the governor's mansion had any real substance

Hi Chief. I thoroughly enjoyed the episode. Very relaxing, very interesting. I was curious: once you've stopped and filled the tanks, about what percentage of the total fuel being carried does it take to get back up to travel velocity? I heard it takes a lot.
Not really like you've heard, for such a short stint(less than 24h) the main engine is on standby and I assume there is no need to start on diesel and then switch to fuel oil, that's why the consumption is quite acceptable and ship starting sail off nice and smooth, especially with such a qualified chief like Makoi, greetings to all onboard even for deck department😊
Not really that much. Ships can reach their Nav speed in less than 30 minutes if the sea is not rough. Typically, ships this size consume about 21 tons of fuel per day at 13.5 knots.
Lets hope to see more improvements to the end of the decade with satelite internet prices! For you guys it would be a great improvement of life quality.
Here's the suggestion for you start link. Get a start link satellite network connection And a wireless router, you can then have good internet anywhere. And if your co-workers wanted to join in, they could pay a small fee to Car part of the cost.
If I understand correctly, and I am probably incorrect, the crap falling downhill goes from the captain then to you (which you work with, hand in hand) and then the captain has their crew and you have your crew. What is it like to come onboard as a chief engineer with a captain that you have never worked with?
Not really from the Captain. He outranks me but I'm his alter-ego in the engine room. The ship runs best if we're a team. If he starts acting like an A-hole, I could be much worse! 😄
Hi chief love to watch your videos. Good luck with your masters degree. Is there any chance of you making a video of how you arrive in port of how your anchor is deployed and retrieve. I would love see a video on the ship your on. All the best and keep posting more videos of sea fire.
