I agree it hits different, even more than Stylo. I feel like this is a safe place to ask - is the Empire Ants drum pattern/sample the exact same as Stylo’s?
"On Empire Ants, in just under five minutes, Gorillaz create an immersive symphony. The first movement is one of ice; of ghostly keyboards that brush feather light atop a glistening, tonal space of bright ambience. "The polyphonic prairies here, it's all around you," sings Albarn, his voice floating high above the flawless sheen of glass-like stillness. Suddenly, a shift, a second movement appears far in the distance, a descending line of pointed synth begins to emerge, flying closer as each second passes. The stillness subsides and it becomes our sole point of focus, becoming more earnest with each refrain. Like a wave, the beat crashes overall, bathing the world in warm, dulcet energy, all while Little Dragon soothe the change in pace with words not meant to be fully understood. In short, this is electro as high art." Read this in a Gorillaz ranking article and thought it was worth sharing.

As much of a good album it is, I think calling it a concept album "..so far ahead of its time." is too much of a praise honestly. The album itself never revolved upon the established story or having a central narrative of its own, just a loose concept with interrelated themes in each song not unlike plenty other albums, such as Radiohead's OK Computer and Kid A for example. It's barely going on the same scope as The Who's Tommy and Quadrophenia, or even Pink Floyd's "mother of concept album" The Wall (though can't deny they still put a tremendous efforts on the plotline and the animation) Nevertheless, it still not detracting it from being an amazing album😃 Edit: word choice error.

as far as classics go this album is very young. Generally an album has to be at least a generation old (20-ish years) before it can be considered classic, as that's usually enough time for people to retrospectively see how much it has influenced and inspired artists that followed and whether it's retained much relevancy after originally seeping into the cultural consciousness. Not to say an album HAS to be popular and influential to be a masterpiece, but the term classic just has different connotations. I like Glitter Freeze because I love rough, loud, off-kilter tangents like that on albums in general. They add an air of peculiarity and catharsis to the overall experience, and are a nice break from the more serious parts of the albums. Electioneering on Radiohead's OK Computer is one of the favourite tracks off the album for the same reason.
Honestly this is my favourite album of all time. The theme of the music, the story and design of the accompanying material, it all means so much to be and hit me when i was a teen so really shaped how i view the world in a way. I feel like this album fits better almost in todays market than it did back in 2010, and im so glad that people are giving it a relisten with new appreciation, or finding it through the youtube algorithm etc Empire Ants especially has gone through a resurgence in popularity and has been remixed countless times on all those 'homework radio 24/7' streams. In 2010, Plastic Beach felt like a subtle warning of what is to come In 2021, relistening to Plastic Beach feels like a slap in the face for not heeding the warning, with all that has happened since
Yeah this record is one of a kind. I was 10/11 when this dropped, completely opened my mind to new sounds and pushed the idea of the concept record to the max. I was completely lost in the world of Gorillaz. Very special music.
Plastic Beach is the album that first got me into Gorillaz after hearing Rhinestone Eyes on the Fifa 11 soundtrack, and I still have a soft spot for it after nearly a decade. I also have to commend it for probably introducing me to the likes of Mos Def and Lou Reed, who have become some of my favourite artists. Huge nostalgia every time I listen to it.
Gorillaz are amazing at incorporating features into their music. They manage to craft entire songs around the artists while also keeping the unique Gorillaz sound. Also the way they make the most unlikely pairings of features sound perfect together (Pink Phantom and MLS) is remarkable.
If there’s one thing EA does well, it’s putting together a fucking banger filled soundtrack on Fifa. Fifa 13 and Fifa 15 have my favorite soundtracks (fifa 15 the best fifa btw)
im glad he touched up on this album, especially rhinestone eyes. i first heard that song when i was 14, six years ago, and it has been in my top five ever since. it's like that song just changed something in me. i remember me and my friend watching the livestream of the 2017 demon days festival, my first time hearing a band like them live because it would be another year until i went to my first concert in person, and when albarn started singing that song i started crying, i was so overwhelmed. i know it's not the "best song ever" or even the most unique/explosive/technically incredible in the album, but i don't know it just did something to me.

hi there, i'm writing to you from Italy and I wanted to suggest you one of the greatest italian rock band ever; they're called "Verdena" and they really changed italian music history. I know it can be difficult to enjoy an italian music album, but I'm sure you're gonna love them because they're really international. I'm suggesting you two of their albums which are "Il Suicidio Dei Samurai" and "WOW"; the first one is from 2004, it's the album that made them so popular in Italy. The second one is from 2011 and it's considered one of the best rock album ever made. I know you're gonna love them. You should also read the lyrics, and if the translations you find online are not the best, I would be glad to translate some songs for you! Just give it a try!
@@gabrielantos4144 i guess you should listen to "Luna", "Phantastica", "Mina", "Elefante", "Scegli me", "Muori Delay", "Razzi Arpia Inferno e Fiamme", "Nevischio", "Contro La Ragione", "Inno del perdersi", "Loniterp", "Miglioramento", "È solo lunedì", and "Nuova Luce". Once you've listened to these songs (which are the greatest ones in my opinion) and you find yourself comfortable with them, i suggest you to listen to the full albums to understand them completely (if you don't do it you'll miss some amazing hidden treasures!)
I thought the track was underappreciated and I was the only one that loves it, but damn this comment section is just spreading love for it like none other - which is great
When you actually take a second, you realise that this album is a masterpiece and had such a massive impact on music. What’s funny is that Damon’s biggest rivalry is oasis and LG. Funny that there even considered a rivalry coz Damon is on a different planet to oasis lol
I remember this coming out near the end of highschool for me. Before then, I was strictly a lame prog-metal need, but I listened to this and was absolutely blown away by it. It really marked a change in my life, from being one-dimensional with my music taste to really broadening my horizon. Also, seeing them live on this tour was insane as well. N.E.R.D. opened, and almost all of the guests (besides Snoop) performed, and the house band at the time was Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of The Clash on guitar and bass. One of the most fun, energetic, and tight shows I've ever seen.
I used to LIVE this album. It's such a nostalgia trip for me, and I used to spend hours playing the point-and-click Myst parody they released, even though half the puzzles were broken to hell. I even looked to see if I could find an archived download for it, but I've had no such luck. Superfast Jellyfish also lives rent free in my mind.
I remember shoveling out my entire block during a heavy blizzard in 2013 while listening to this album it was cold af outside but I was chilling in an island made of trash somewhere in the middle of the sea
I love weather/music moments like that. Years ago I was delivering leaflets in the pouring rain, listening to muse's first few albums and miming and dancing around the empty street as I did it, and for whatever reason it was so powerful I've never forgotten it
Glitter Freeze is such an incredible track to me. It's the perfect transition from the first half of the album to the latter half. The simplicity of the song makes it feel like a regular electronic dance banger, but I think the repetitiveness and uneasiness of the track at the end encapsulate the concept of the album. Really wish you liked that track more, Anthony. Then maybe Gorillaz could have gotten a 10 😳
Maybe this will become an annual thing where he has a redux review at the start of an album he either missed or has new things to say about, especially lord of those reviews back in 2009/2010 that were either deleted or unfortunately short
I’d like to see a lot of the redux reviews of stuff from that “reviews I changed my opinion on” video, or even some albums from the video on stuff he wished he reviewed
Max Max for real. I’m surprised he hasn’t at least made a video on Mista Thug Isolation yet. For some reason I was legit half-expecting him to consider it a classic or something at this point lol
You idiot, you combined the 2 albums, Bad Habits & Good Intentions are 2 distinct albums (that both deserve a 10 because of their masterfully crafted lyrics and melodies)
This was the first album I bought as a kid with my first phone. Fell in love with it and became more in love with it when I listened to this album in Acapulco (the Miami of Mexico) this has been my favorite album ever since. A lot of Gorillaz “fans” always dissed me for not liking demon days more.
Chris Schuett nah i meant like buying it on my phone, before then I’ve bought, Demon days, their 19- 2000 album, D-sides, G sides, their singles collection, and the space monkeys vsGorillaz: Laika come home on DVD. It was just my first online purchase lol
Chris Schuett it was just more special cause I could listen to it anywhere I wanted instead of being limited to only my house where the DVD player was at, that’s why it’s so dear to me
As somebody who (even to this day) absolutely LOVES Gorillaz’s first two albums, I remember having mixed feelings and feeling somewhat disappointed when this album was released because it was a completely different direction to what we all knew of the band at the time and loved. I did remember loving the Snoop Dogg feature specifically though. I was about 14 years old when this album was released so I was going through my edgy emo teen phase at the time, and even back then, music, life, society was way different to how it is today. However, over the last decade - as my music taste has matured during that time, I feel this album has aged like fine wine and honestly I wish I had given this album more of a chance back in the day because it is just bloody fantastic. This album is definitely on my list of top albums by Gorillaz. Isn’t it funny how music can do that to you? Thanks for re-reviewing this!
I have _Plastic Beach_ on vinyl and I am certainly pleased to have it on CD and digitally as well. Just a great album all around! If there were a cassette pressing I likely would've gotten that, too.
Plastic Beach was that album that I always kinda just respected. Then as time went on, I began to love it more and more. Now it’s not just my favorite Gorillaz album, but my favorite album of all time.
I was 8 when this album came out, not really listening to music that much but had realized that one of my favorite songs just so happened to be “Melancholy Hill” without really realizing it. I’m 19 now and I’ve become so much more accustomed to music that I came back to this album to see why it’s such a great album and I’m blown away. This album is damn near perfect and with each listen I become more and more addicted. I love music, shits awesome
I remember listening to this album for the first time --- > I was on a boat, on a tailings pond, in northern Alberta oil sands. A TRUE Plastic Beach. It resonated at that moment so well...
the only reason why this album got a 9 is because Lulu is so good that the vinyl in the back ground emitted waves of radiation that influenced fantano on his review
Right on man, you nailed this one. I liked Plastic Beach when it came out, but over the years it’s grown on me to where I consider it a masterpiece. Empire Ants and Melancholy Hill are all time classics. And yeah Glitter Freeze is the only slightly weak track, but even that has its moments.
Definitely my favorite album of 2010, I remember when it came out. I was a senior in highschool. First year I smoked weed too, the title track was my jam, still is.
Always viewed this album as the story of the creation and destruction of a civilization. The end of the album being that humans have gone too far and destroyed the island they lived on. Pirate Jet serves as a looping track where island inhabitants abandon what they’ve destroyed in search for a new island to populate and later destroy. The album loops, the cycle repeats
That’s strange that you re reviewed this because I just got this on vinyl a few days ago and I can’t stop listening to it. I love the meaningfully and sometimes dark themes over this amazing production. It’s definitely one of my favorites right now.

Honestly this is my favourite album of all time. The theme of the music, the story and design of the accompanying material, it all means so much to be and hit me when i was a teen so really shaped how i view the world in a way.
I feel like this album fits better almost in todays market than it did back in 2010, and im so glad that people are giving it a relisten with new appreciation, or finding it through the youtube algorithm etc
Empire Ants especially has gone through a resurgence in popularity and has been remixed countless times on all those 'homework radio 24/7' streams.
In 2010, Plastic Beach felt like a subtle warning of what is to come
In 2021, relistening to Plastic Beach feels like a slap in the face for not heeding the warning, with all that has happened since
Yeah this record is one of a kind. I was 10/11 when this dropped, completely opened my mind to new sounds and pushed the idea of the concept record to the max. I was completely lost in the world of Gorillaz. Very special music.
I had the same experience when I heard smash mouth’s Astro Lounge as a kid
this album has aged so god damn well
It’s actually reverse ageing at this point
I wish “Do Ya Thang” was on the album and on Apple Music
Amazing song. I listen to it every time I run

*In the wake of the destruction of Plastic Beach* it’s nice to see Anthony reconsider his opinion on it.

hi there, i'm writing to you from Italy and I wanted to suggest you one of the greatest italian rock band ever; they're called "Verdena" and they really changed italian music history.
I'm from the UK, and I think Verdena are great. I also think it would be cool to see what Anthony thinks

Glitter Freeze is such an incredible track to me. It's the perfect transition from the first half of the album to the latter half. The simplicity of the song makes it feel like a regular electronic dance banger, but I think the repetitiveness and uneasiness of the track at the end encapsulate the concept of the album.
This album is like the BEST example of a fine wine. Only gets better with time.
You know I considered this album to be a 10 for awhile, but after watching this I'm going to have to make it a 9. Definitely not because of any bias.

All of your classic reviews and now this one were all my high school life.
I'm not personally super familiar with Gorillaz's material, but Rhinestone Eyes has always been one of my favorite songs of theirs.
God, I love this band. Even when they stumble (which isn't this album LOL), they're still so interesting and varied, artistically and lyrically.
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one!
I was so happy when I saw that 9 pop up on screen.
