In Puerto Rico this type of music is called "musica tipica, "musica folklorica," or "musica jibara," in case you would like to hear more of it. Darren Benitez knows this genre--you can tell from his playing and his Spanish-language song choices.
You can hear the sound of the güiro. That is what creates the "scratchy" sound that earned Puerto Rican folk music the name of "catchi catchi" or "katchi katchi" in Hawaii.
My grandfather is the Cuatro player & told Darren all the lyrics of all the Puerto Rican music he sang from old songs from Puerto Rico. My grandfather recently passed at age 91 but he has videos on youtube from the past.Search Julio Rodrigues Hawaii ..He is Pure Puerto Rican but raised in Hawaii. Our family came from Adjuntas & Penuelas. Musica Tipica has been cherished here because besides the food it is all we have to remind us of where we come from.
@@dean96792able Wonderful cuatro playing. I love the sound. I knew it was authentic as soon as I heard it. I heard a lot of Puerto Rican music when I was growing up on Kauai. It's wonderful. Thanks for telling us about your abuelo (grandfather).

Recordings of this song, "Los ojos de mi mulata," are hard to find. This is the best I've heard. I wish I could locate the composer.
