There is an example in the book where in an agreement where A promises to pay Rs. 50,000 to B if it rains on the first of next month. On the happening of the event (here rain) A will pay Rs. 50,000 as consideration. But there is no consideration moving from B to A. Why is such a contract valid?

Because it is Wagering Agreement and Wagering Agreements are void
According to Section 30 Of ICA 1872
