One of my first years as a teacher, I had all of the kids, bring a shoebox to paint and decorate as a mailbox for Valentine’s Day. Well, we got them all painted only to find that the shiny outside of a shoebox does not take acrylic paint at all! All of the paint started chipping off their shoeboxes as soon as it dried. I told the kids that if they wanted to keep it, they could take it home, but I didn’t want to see them again because I was just so bummed and kind of embarrassed that the project didn’t work. If only I would have had chalk paint back then!
