In regard to making the bed, you should be able to have the buttons to move the bed out from the backrest to have full access to make the bed even easier. Just like if you move the bed up to lift the head it should have more movement to move the bed flat toward the fireplace to give room to doo the top of the bed.

With the slides in does the bed still lay flat? My wife likes to rest in the bed when we are on quiet stretches of interstate.

I believe the king flat bed is standard. We have the optional power smart bed which has to be retracted for the slides to come in.
