For me it's a three way split: 1. The scene between Gandalf and Frodo that you mentioned. Just such incredible advice. 2. Gandalf describing Heaven to Pippin at Minas Tirith 3. Sam: "I can't carry it for you, Mr. Frodo, but I can carry you!" I cry reading and watching that scene forever and ever.

@@serenity2228 I would argue the arc he goes through in Two Towers transforms him very close to how he is the books. The biggest difference of course is that in the films he is bitter and cynical towards the beginning, and is willing to take the one ring for Gonder which is the complete opposite of the book. Even though I understand why fans of the book were upset by this I would like to remind them that films and books are totally different mediums. If they met Faramir and he was already like how was in the books that wouldn't have created a lot of drama or action. That's all well and fine in a novel structure, but not in a films. Having Faramir more dark in the beginning allows a lot more tension, drama, and action in the last third of Two Towers.
@@maskedmovieman4303 I can see where you're coming from. It's especially useful for people not familiar with the character from the books I suppose. The thing is, I think that a lot of the development of his character that you're saying the audience would miss if he wasn't the way he was in the films comes in a large scene that was almost entirely left out of the films, the house of healing. I think that scene could have done wonders for bothe faramir and Eowens characters in the films, but then again, time constraints are a thing. All this being said, He's meant to be an archetype and I don't think it's correct that it wouldn't have worked in a film to have him serve as that archetype.

Favorite part - Eowyn's turnaround in the houses of healing - from being angry independent tom boy to actually accepting help/love. In the book. The movie gives it a weird nod in a dreamy sequence in the extended edition, but the book actually tells the story. The houses of healing possible author cameo by the doctor with the etymological roots for everything is awesome too.
It's a great exposition and development of Faramir's character, too. A real shame that they botched Faramir so badly in the films just to use him as plot development.

Favorite quote is from the Two Towers and it’s Sam’s monologue! I know. It’s all wrong By rights we shouldn’t even be here. But we are. It’s like in the great stories Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy. How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad happened. But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn’t. Because they were holding on to something. ‘What are we holding on to, Sam?’ That there’s some good in this world, Mr Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.
This isn’t from the book; it was penned by Peter Jackson. And I don’t mean to be contrarian, but I’ve always found this scene cringey. Both because “there’s some good in the world worth fighting for” is so un-Tolkien, and because Faramir deciding to deliver the Ring to his father and dragging Frodo and Sam back to Osgiliath is utterly ought of character.

I’m really intrigued by the binding, and can’t help but wonder if he did it the old fashioned way where it’s sewn together in a way I never learned. (That’s how you get those ridges on the spine, usually it’s just imitated.) So beautiful.
I'm not too familiar with bookbinding, so I'm not exactly sure when they started using machines, but he does it all by hand. So I'd assume the old fashioned way!

Can’t pick a favorite but I did get a tattoo of the line you quoted. It’s like a compass for me. When I get anxious about things I can’t control, namely time, this brings me back to the task at hand.
An amazingly imaginative piece of literature. I absolutely love the bespoke book you have been sent. It looks deserving of its own shelf 😊 Craftsmanship is a dying art, but will hopefully have a resurgence with all the mass produced junk we have become accustomed to. LOTR is pretty old by today's standards & I read the books in the 1980s at school. When the movies arrived it absolutely blew my mind that technology had caught up to bring these amazing books to life. The classic tail of Good Vs Evil.
Two Towers was my favorite book, and even though I only read it once about 20 years ago, I remember Flotsam and Jetsam as one of my favorite chapters. I need to reread LotR now.
There is a great new edition with illustrations and sketches by Tolkien. It cost me about 47,-€. There is also a very expensive 130,-€ One, but the „cheaper“ one is also great. If you need an incentive to get a new edition and reread the book.

That just reminds me so much of Jesus, and then when the demon grabs him and pulls him down and you think that all's lost. . Then you find out in the next book that gandalf fought the demon off and won. Such a picture of Christ!
Galadriel and Gimli, when they first met is my favorite scene in the books. I acquired full audible comprehension of English after reading it in English. I guess I've put enough words inside that the language came alive.
Favourite quote - the one you quote: I wish the ring had never come to me, I wish none of this had happened. So do all who live to see such times, but it is not for them to decide. All you have to decide is what to do with the time given to you. Bilbo was meant to find the ring, and that means that you were too. And that is an encouraging thought (just from the top of my head, may not be word for word).

Just finished a re-read of this myself, so beautiful. The battle of Pelennor fields is probably the best written chapter of any work literature out there, honestly.

Favorite scene is when the Fellowship travels through Moria, specifically at the Chamber of Mazarbul. "Here lies Balin, son of Fundin, Lord of Moria." Gets me every time!

LOVED this episode! Huge fan of TLOTR trilogy, tradCat like yourself and Ugandan! I love the song Gandalf hums on his return to the Shire at the beginning of the Fellowship of the Ring: "The Road goes ever on and on Down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, And I must follow, if I can". The only thing missing from TLOTL was a Tridentine Mass!

I absolutely love LOTR. The movies and the books were among the things that brought me back to my faith after I drifted away, and ultimately helped put me on the path to becoming Catholic. It's hard to pick a single favorite part. But several quotes stand out to me. There's a beautiful dialog before the battle at Helm's deep between Gimli and Legolas, as things look hopeless. Legolas says "Oft hope is born when all is forlorn." Is that not our faith? When all seems darkest and without hope, there stands Christ.

There is so much worth quoting. However, what follows is my all time favorite scene in any work of literature ever. “In rode the Lord of the Nazgûl. Hey, thanks for sharing. That book looks really nice. Not sure what my favorite quote or scene is, as I'm not even half way through, but the parts I've enjoyed most have been when the hobbits were traveling by themselves. There was more of a sense of mystery (since they were all stepping into new territories for the first time) and danger (since they, usually, had no one looking after them as they made their way through, and out of, the Shire). One scene I really enjoyed was when they came across the elves in the forest at night. Some of my favorite quotes, so far, have been Tolkien's beautifully poetic descriptions. Two that come to mind are: ○ "Strange fertive noises ran among the bushes and reeds on either side of them; and if they looked up to the pale sky, they caught sight of queer gnarled and knobbly faces that gloomed dark against the twilight, and leered down at them from the high bank and the edges of the wood. They began to feel that all this country was unreal, and that they were stumbling through and ominous dream that led to no awakening." ○ "It was a pale morning: in the East, behind long clouds like lines of soiled wool stained red at the edges, lay glimmering deeps of yellow. The sky spoke of rain to come; but the light was broadening quickly, and the red flowers on the beans began to glow against the wet green leaves."

He makes them all by hand so he'll make one, list it and then it'll sell out unless he's made a few before he reopens his shop. I bought the Alan lee illustrated edition you see in this video the other day after wanting it for a long time. Favourite part from the book, when Frodo decides what he has to do when the Fellowship is broken at Amon Hen. You can see how he is govern comfort and courage, and you can see how Tolkien wrote in the work of grace moving in the world helping the heroes.

Beautiful books. I personally prefer ebooks now, however, since my eyesight isn't what it once was, and I can manipulate the text size and font style to compensate. Plus, reading on my Kindle app on my laptop in bed, while not necessarily good for my eyes either, leaves my arms and hands free to hold a beverage and bend an elbow, to sit up on my side and so on in my jimjams.
I love the scene where the hobbits are hiding out with Aragorn in one of the rooms at the Inn & they overhear the Dark Riders screaming & Frodo asks, "What are they?" & Aragorn replies, ""They were once men; great kings of men. Then Sauron the Deceiver gave to them nine Rings of Power. Blinded by their greed, they took them without question, one by one falling into darkness. Now they are slaves to his will."

“The Gifts of Galadriel” is my favorite scene, hands down. As a Catholic, is is very Marian and speaks to the deep love that powers the Fellowship into danger and death. The remains of the group come to Galadriel broken; she helps them heal and sends them out with renewed purpose. The point where she literally gives of herself to Gimli the Dwarf is utterly heartbreaking.
Aaand this is why Christians deem Catholicism blasphemous and heretical. Lord of the Rings talks about Galadriel far more than scripture talks about Mary, and yet LotR places less emphasis on Galadriel than Papists place on Mary. It's an obsession with the divine feminine.

God wasn't defining a physical hierarchy of Christian authority when he made a pun about Peter's name, and indeed, nobody made the claim that that's what He was doing until hundreds of years later when corruption was seeping in among the faithful. What you need to understand is that the Church is invisible and spiritual, made up of followers of Christ all over the world and within many denominations, not contained in a city of gold. There are many Catholics who are Christians, but just like every denomination, the Roman Catholic Church itself is corrupt as an organization. So if they tell you something that clearly contradicts scripture, you shouldn't listen. This is an organization that burned every Bible that they found in the hands of the people for almost a thousand years, maybe be at least a little bit discerning about their so-called holy traditions and whether they have a solid scriptural basis.

The Lord of the Rings is ultimately an ode to the power and importance of friendship. And it warms my heart. It's also a scathing criticism of our embrace of industrialism at the expense of the environment, good vs evil, global violence, and more. But at its core is the theme of friendship above all else.

Lord of the Rings is the only book to bring me to tears. Tolkien set me on the path to Catholicism. I've got even had the honor to write for several tabletop RPG products associated with the property.
One of my favourite lines was when Gandalf introduced himself to Durin's Bane on the Bridge of Khazad-dum: "I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor." In the first movie, the Balrog did not attack Gandalf until he introduced himself with that line, and any Tolkien book lover would known who and what "the Secret Fire" is.

The biggest difference of course is that in the films he is bitter and cynical towards the beginning, and is willing to take the one ring for Gonder which is the complete opposite of the book.
Even though I understand why fans of the book were upset by this I would like to remind them that films and books are totally different mediums. If they met Faramir and he was already like how was in the books that wouldn't have created a lot of drama or action. That's all well and fine in a novel structure, but not in a films. Having Faramir more dark in the beginning allows a lot more tension, drama, and action in the last third of Two Towers.
@@maskedmovieman4303 I can see where you're coming from. It's especially useful for people not familiar with the character from the books I suppose. The thing is, I think that a lot of the development of his character that you're saying the audience would miss if he wasn't the way he was in the films comes in a large scene that was almost entirely left out of the films, the house of healing. I think that scene could have done wonders for bothe faramir and Eowens characters in the films, but then again, time constraints are a thing. All this being said, He's meant to be an archetype and I don't think it's correct that it wouldn't have worked in a film to have him serve as that archetype.

Favorite part - Eowyn's turnaround in the houses of healing - from being angry independent tom boy to actually accepting help/love. In the book. The movie gives it a weird nod in a dreamy sequence in the extended edition, but the book actually tells the story. The houses of healing possible author cameo by the doctor with the etymological roots for everything is awesome too.
It's a great exposition and development of Faramir's character, too. A real shame that they botched Faramir so badly in the films just to use him as plot development.

Matt, as someone who took a year and a half of bookbinding in college, you are holding a gem. I’m really intrigued by the binding, and can’t help but wonder if he did it the old fashioned way where it’s sewn together in a way I never learned. (That’s how you get those ridges on the spine, usually it’s just imitated.) So beautiful.
I'm not too familiar with bookbinding, so I'm not exactly sure when they started using machines, but he does it all by hand. So I'd assume the old fashioned way!

LOTR is pretty old by today's standards & I read the books in the 1980s at school. When the movies arrived it absolutely blew my mind that technology had caught up to bring these amazing books to life.
The classic tail of Good Vs Evil.
Two Towers was my favorite book, and even though I only read it once about 20 years ago, I remember Flotsam and Jetsam as one of my favorite chapters. I need to reread LotR now.
There is a great new edition with illustrations and sketches by Tolkien. It cost me about 47,-€. There is also a very expensive 130,-€ One, but the „cheaper“ one is also great. If you need an incentive to get a new edition and reread the book.

I absolutely love LOTR. The movies and the books were among the things that brought me back to my faith after I drifted away, and ultimately helped put me on the path to becoming Catholic. It's hard to pick a single favorite part. But several quotes stand out to me. There's a beautiful dialog before the battle at Helm's deep between Gimli and Legolas, as things look hopeless. Legolas says "Oft hope is born when all is forlorn." Is that not our faith? When all seems darkest and without hope, there stands Christ.

The scene where Sam looks up and sees Eärendil and finds high hope that there is the good and beautiful that I’d beyond the reach of all evil.
There is so much worth quoting. However, what follows is my all time favorite scene in any work of literature ever.
“In rode the Lord of the Nazgûl. A great black shape against the fires beyond he loomed up, grown to a vast menace of despair. In rode the Lord of the Nazgûl, under the archway that no enemy ever yet had passed, and all fled before his face.
All save one. There waiting, silent and still in the space before the Gate, sat Gandalf upon Shadowfax: Shadowfax who alone among the free horses of the earth endured the terror, unmoving, steadfast as a graven image in Rath Dínen.

There are scenes and quotes with more philosophical depth, but this scene puts front and center what could easily be called the heart of all Tolkien's work and vision... Eucatastrophe.

Not sure what my favorite quote or scene is, as I'm not even half way through, but the parts I've enjoyed most have been when the hobbits were traveling by themselves. There was more of a sense of mystery (since they were all stepping into new territories for the first time) and danger (since they, usually, had no one looking after them as they made their way through, and out of, the Shire).
One scene I really enjoyed was when they came across the elves in the forest at night. Some of my favorite quotes, so far, have been Tolkien's beautifully poetic descriptions.
Two that come to mind are:
○ "Strange fertive noises ran among the bushes and reeds on either side of them; and if they looked up to the pale sky, they caught sight of queer gnarled and knobbly faces that gloomed dark against the twilight, and leered down at them from the high bank and the edges of the wood. They began to feel that all this country was unreal, and that they were stumbling through and ominous dream that led to no awakening."

He makes them all by hand so he'll make one, list it and then it'll sell out unless he's made a few before he reopens his shop. I bought the Alan lee illustrated edition you see in this video the other day after wanting it for a long time. Currently if you go to his shop he only has the hobbit up, or all 3 individual lord of the rings books up. Favourite part from the book, when Frodo decides what he has to do when the Fellowship is broken at Amon Hen. You can see how he is govern comfort and courage, and you can see how Tolkien wrote in the work of grace moving in the world helping the heroes.

Beautiful books. I personally prefer ebooks now, however, since my eyesight isn't what it once was, and I can manipulate the text size and font style to compensate. Plus, reading on my Kindle app on my laptop in bed, while not necessarily good for my eyes either, leaves my arms and hands free to hold a beverage and bend an elbow, to sit up on my side and so on in my jimjams.

I love the scene where the hobbits are hiding out with Aragorn in one of the rooms at the Inn & they overhear the Dark Riders screaming & Frodo asks, "What are they?" & Aragorn replies, ""They were once men; great kings of men. Then Sauron the Deceiver gave to them nine Rings of Power. Blinded by their greed, they took them without question, one by one falling into darkness. Now they are slaves to his will."

“The Gifts of Galadriel” is my favorite scene, hands down. As a Catholic, is is very Marian and speaks to the deep love that powers the Fellowship into danger and death. The remains of the group come to Galadriel broken; she helps them heal and sends them out with renewed purpose. The point where she literally gives of herself to Gimli the Dwarf is utterly heartbreaking.
Aaand this is why Christians deem Catholicism blasphemous and heretical.
Lord of the Rings talks about Galadriel far more than scripture talks about Mary, and yet LotR places less emphasis on Galadriel than Papists place on Mary.

The Lord of the Rings is ultimately an ode to the power and importance of friendship. And it warms my heart. It's also a scathing criticism of our embrace of industrialism at the expense of the environment, good vs evil, global violence, and more. But at its core is the theme of friendship above all else.

Lord of the Rings is the only book to bring me to tears. Tolkien set me on the path to Catholicism. I've got even had the honor to write for several tabletop RPG products associated with the property.
One of my favourite lines was when Gandalf introduced himself to Durin's Bane on the Bridge of Khazad-dum: "I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor." In the first movie, the Balrog did not attack Gandalf until he introduced himself with that line, and any Tolkien book lover would known who and what "the Secret Fire" is.
Is the secret fire explained in LOTR or one of his other works?
