2004+ northstars are actually very reliable engines. If you look up the headbolts on rock auto, that's the year they revamped the design. These are what you want to have for a cross country road trip. The last great American highway cruisers.
My 2006 and 2008 DTSs were great cars. Drove each about 85,000 miles. The 2006 held up well in a helluva wreck; collapse panels worked well. The gap between the rear end of the left front quarter and the leading edge of the driver’s door remained true. By the time State Farm [finally] told me that the 2006 would be rebuilt I had already bought the 2008 Platinum DTS. Loved both cars; now in a 2019 CT6-V. What beautiful car. They’ll bury my as in a Caddy!🥰
I love my 07 DTS Performance edition! It has 135,000 and I bought it for $4k last year. I've had to put a little work into it but I really love the ride and interior. Being a Luxury III trim it has magnetic suspension, massaging seats, power rear seats, and sunshades in the back doors and rear window. Great cars, I hope you find one someday for you to enjoy. Love your videos man, keep on keepin on! -Clint
Funny, a customer of mine got a 2008 DTS a couple mnths ago. They put tires on it pretty much immediately, and it developed a bad power steering pressure hose and a bad T fitting in the heater hose, both of which I replaced. The heater hose is a huge pain, but that's done and it no longer overheats. The power steering hose was comparitively easy, enough that I was able to do that one in the field despite spending 40 minutes underneath it due to a lack of space. But she runs great now that she's fixed. Super comfy, decent sounding engine.
That DTS is SHARP! But to be fair, ALL the Northstars COULD be good... IF you got lucky enough to get one that the head bolts weren't overtorqued at assembly. A person had about a 1 in 10 chance of getting a good one. I totally lucked out. I have a '99 Deville w/ 192K that purrs like new. I love it. It has the Firestar Gold paint and absurdly comfortable gold leather seats.

My dad just recently sold a 2005 Deville with the 2nd generation 32V. It had 180,000 miles at time of sale. Unfortunately it had failing rear main seals and manifold head gaskets. The shop wanted 4,000$ to replace it. But my lord for the 4 years we got out of it. It was a land sofa and I loved it so much! My dad is currently looking for a Replacement, possibly a 2008-12 DTS.
This 2nd generation DTS was built in Detroit from 2006-2011. Last one rolled off the line May 27, 2011. With only 11,000 produced and built for the 2011 model year.
Dont kick yourself so hard man, what youre doing for youre grandparents is fantastic. One day soon you will get youre Cadillac. And you deserve it! Great video.
In the last year or so I been getting informed via RUclips about this head bolt issue revision and I wish I’d known sooner because I love the style of these cars and been wanting one
When I was buying a car last Fall, after my ‘11 Civic crapped out, I was looking at a budget of $8k-$9k. I was seriously thinking about one of these-I absolutely love the design, especially with the screen and floor shifter, but I couldn’t do it. Not because of the engine, but the fuel economy. Sprung for a 2012 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid instead, and 36 MPG can’t be wrong, but sometimes I still wish I’d gone for the Caddy instead.
I don't know about the different generations of the infamous Northstar engine but I know whatever generation they still hold the same reputation. I recently had a customer who had a 2009 XLR convertible with the North Star. It's what we call in South Florida a condo car. A condo car is a car owned by a senior citizen who not only put very few miles on their cars but usually keep them garage door under an overhang and have all the schedule maintenance done usually at the same dealership. This 2009 had just under 18K original miles and looked like it just came off the Cadillac showroom floor. As soon as any of the other wholesalers see that it has the infamous 4.6 Northstar they bolt like the car is about to explode. It was stunning to me to see that the book value of this car was almost identical to an Avalon of the same year with almost 200k miles on it especially considering the Cadillac cost almost three times as much brand new. It's a shame because I agree with Jay that they are stunning cars to look at with some of the most comfortable rides I've ever experienced but yikes can they be trouble!
I feel the same way about the DTS and can afford one but have yet to find one that seemed to be a good fit. Must not be the only one... around here they go for crazy money with low miles and garage conditioned
Yes! 2004+ Northstar’s are a good buy. That’s when GM got it “right”. Base model DTS though, interesting. The next package up has heated and cooled front seats, heated steering wheel, front and back sensors, etc.
If he would've followed the Wizard's advice and avoided the Acadia, he could've been able to afford 2 or 3 DTSs by now. The GM 3.6 teaches folks the hard lessons in life. "Coulda had a Northstar."
I am a former Cadillac technician from the late nineties in California. Personally I love the North Star my son drives 06 DTS in our family ride is an 08 DTS. The North Star is a misunderstood work of art. The oil leaks actually kept my children from going to Community College.. we used to get 28 hours for a complete reseal at the dealer. I used to do them in the car once the transmission was out it was Bam Bam done. You're rolling if you are blessed with two of them on a pay period I love the North Star
I absolutely love those 06-11 Cadillac DTS!! 2005 the last body style of the 00-05, has the revised Northstar as well! The 05 model is cheaper than the 06-11.
Agree I just bought one under a hundred thousand and in mint condition for 3500 one owner older couple had for the wife husband past with covid so she sold it and moved to Mexico 🇲🇽. Blows my mind it’s definitely a sweet ride

The car wizzard had a $4k fix for the earlier ones. He got a low mile one for his daughter for cheap with a blown head gasket stud. He fixed it and she has put a zillion miles wity no problem
Hey guys check out Midwest Cadillac repair in Palatine, Illinois. They do Improvement repairs on Northstar engines with head gaskets& head studs and all engine reseals. And the do a stand up job with great pricing too.
I just spent yesterday engine swapping mine. I love them sorry. To explain I bought a clean body(black on black) some idiot tried to seal the mid pan. And promptly locked it up. I then put my 245,000 mile engine in it. Lol
First of all, you make great videos always entertaining and full of information. Secondly, I've been driving Caddy's since the 1970s. Last new caddy I bought was an 05. Absolutely hated that car!! The worst ride ever. Even Cadillac knew it was so bad they didn't put Cadillac on the cars exterior. Two of the caddies have the overheating problem. Dump them at the first side of overheating because Cadillac will charge you over $2,000 to fix. I just found a 1989 baby Sedan DeVille with 58000 original miles. Better than meant, if you hadn't looked at the better than mint. If you had looked at the mileage you think it was Factory fresh! It was always Raven once or twice a week and never out of the neighborhood. Got it for chicken scratch, cheap, cheap, cheap.
And I just looked on Marketplace and there is a 2007 DTS Black on Black with 133.5k miles on it for $4,500. Looks pretty good imo. There is also a 2009 DTS with 179k on it that looks to be in rougher shape for $3,200.
Have a 2008 DTS, got it new. love it. Smooth ride, the Northstar can flat get that sedan moving. I'll keep this as long as possible. Get it detailed inside and out, including the engine well every year and adhere to the maintenance schedule without fail. Wish GM would stop with their small Cadillacs and E-vehicle nonsense. Nobody who enjoys Cadillac wants one of those. Cadillac brand is for winners and signifies you've made it.
I have always liked these as well. I know the 2006 and 2007 had some oil leak issues. What would you say is the best year on the DTS? I’m gonna buy one
It only took GM more than a decade to solve the head gasket issue My local Cadillac dealer didnt even do the head gasket repairs. They just did a re manufactured GM crate engine swap
@@MXguy95 144k miles on mine and still going strong pretty much. Needs a valve cover gasket and a water pump soon but I’m very happy. I’ve had my car now for about six months and 10,000 miles. It’s a 94 sedan Deville
oh bummer, have fun with that water pump job I loathe those. Did a few and am pleased to not have done another lol. But yea, those cars will run forever and youve got the good body on it too, 94 was smooth!
I sure would love to have one of these cars. I've been looking online to get a price range. With some dark window tint and a nice sound system, oh my gosh....
they already have a pretty decent sound system depending on trim. Mine has full bose. Of course it won't be as good as aftermarket but it is awesome for stock.
Im telling you, that Wide bench seat and that chrome gear shifter up on the column still feels more vintage luxury then any old floor shift ever will to me. Gotta have the column shift !
To get the yellow off the headlight plastic, easy fix. Get ya some off bug spray with deet. Spray it on wait a few seconds and rub it in a circle with an old rag. The lens will go perfectly clear. Might take a couple sprays. But always works for me.
That never seems to work well for me. It either doesnt change anything or it only last a few days. The other headlight looks so good I think we will just put one new one in it and call it a day
Missed these videos. Those C250s are really really bad lol. I’m a Merc guy. Those DTS on the other hand, they actually got those together by 2006-2011! Shoot is that one up for grabs?
Have a 06 cadillac dts...after we had record low temps in sc car is now running hot after about 15 minutes,,,no leaks,,no oil contamination,,,no smoke,,,did a combustion leak test and pressure test,,all neg,,,any ideas what im missing,,im 66 and always been a do it your self mechanic but this is my 1st dts,,136 k miles and never had a issue
Such a lovely car I have a 09 with 150k miles on it and so far the only issue I have with was the fuel pump relay was burning all the time, so I put external relay outside the fuse box and it works well, other than this was the front end. I really want to know if I could remap the PCM, I want to install HHO kit
Mine is maroon too, same year. Also needs a paint job lol. It is a 20 footer. Any closer you can see the swirls and chips. It is a shame because I love that color.

The car wizzard had a $4k fix for the earlier ones. He got a low mile one for his daughter for cheap with a blown head gasket stud. He fixed it and she has put a zillion miles wity no problem
I just bought a 06 ❤❤😎 got to change the pully and hope I'm safe far as the heads and over heating lol
I guess you would sing
"Santa won't you bring me a Cadillac DTS,please bring it to me." As your Christmas Carol
Jay make another vid of the Oldsmobile.. That ride was cool.. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
So classy. Would love to drive one.
Its quite a ride!
That's a nice car man good color 👌
Beautiful car!
Very nice Indeed. I haven't had a chance to drive a dts or sts yet... LOOKS SOO CUMFYYYY!
I knew there had to be a trunk release on the dash because my 2009 Impala has one right next to the headlight switch
I looked right over it ! Same headlight switch as the impala too if im not mistaken
My Great Grandmother has one of these and they're nice!👍
Yes they are! She will get many years of good reliable use from it
@@MXguy95 Yeah! I'm pretty sure she's had it for about 10-12 years already!👍
It only took GM more than a decade to solve the head gasket issue
My local Cadillac dealer didnt even do the head gasket repairs. They just did a re manufactured GM crate engine swap
I just love cadillacs don't care what it is
This is the best looking model of Cadillac ever made 😎
I would consider it because they ironed most of the bugs out by then. Then again I love my 4.9
Oh you cant compare it to the 4.9 thats cheating! LoL those 4.9s are bulletproof man. But the new NorthStar's are definitely competing now
@@MXguy95 144k miles on mine and still going strong pretty much.
@@MXguy95 I got a buddy of mine who is willing to help me out with it
Nice Cad, ellegant car
Not a bad looking Cadillac. Didn't mind this generation actually. In pretty good shape and surprisingly a good Northstar.
Very nice classy Cadillac.
Wow shes a beauty i love my dts !!
I sure would love to have one of these cars. I've been looking online to get a price range. With some dark window tint and a nice sound system, oh my gosh....
they already have a pretty decent sound system depending on trim. Mine has full bose. Of course it won't be as good as aftermarket but it is awesome for stock.
Nice Caddy😃
I love me a DTS as well as that Caddy smell!
Damn. I just bought a ‘10 DTS. Love it but I really wish It had that bench seat and column shifter😅
Shoot is that one up for grabs?
very nice features
I have a 2011 DTS and have never had a major issue with it.
Such a lovely car
I have a 09 with 150k miles on it and so far the only issue I have with was the fuel pump relay was burning all the time, so I put external relay outside the fuse box and it works well, other than this was the front end. I really want to know if I could remap the PCM, I want to install HHO kit
Yeah you can. There is a company that does it.
Got 52k miles on my 08 love it! It's the Maroon color but needs a paint job 😔
Mine is maroon too, same year. Also needs a paint job lol. It is a 20 footer. Any closer you can see the swirls and chips. It is a shame because I love that color.
