Hi Ralfy, Good man! I haven't watched TV for just over five years. Some how I've managed to fill my time with work, conversation, and enjoying the finer things in life. Keep up the good work!
I just love your philosophical comments and historical stories. I find them interesting and inspirational. Please keep augmenting your videos with this stuff, and I'll keep coming back.
Simon and Grarfunkle said it best, "...I get all the news I need from the weather report." And even that is iffy nowadays! I've been three years television free. It's hard to believe I use to pay for that shite! Great review Ralfy! I was out in the yard at 5:30 this morning watching the International Space Station go over. They send me an e-mail when it is visible and where to look. Voyager One and Two continue on their journey's into deep space, leaves one in awe!
It sure does, and Cassini will end in Saturn's atmosphere soon showing us what its like in the depths of the great planet. I wonder if we'll see the diamond rainfall thats supposed to happen there!?!
I'm sure it will take ESA and NASA time to analyze all the data but we'll be watching Cassini on 15 September! The "natural" radio waves picked up by Cassini emanating from Saturn are interesting, I wonder if we'll ever know how they are generated?
A very enjoyable re-review Ralfy. I concur with the changing palate theory. Like your good-self I've been getting on with some fantastic rums of late. The most exciting purchase I made was a limited Del Maguey mezcal. I'm very fond of the 'second rung' malts like Benrinnes, Glen Elgin, Strathmill etc...Iv'e enjoyed some very fine independent bottles that float under the radar.
Ralfy I was frustrated as neither Korea nor my home province of Manitoba carry the Angus Dundee malts. Meanwhile they are key malts in Koreas top blend. How happy was I while in Japan on vacation when I found a plethora of shops with nearly every malt bourbon whisky etc on the planet. I took hold every Tomintoul I found. Not the 14 but im tasting it now vicariously through you, Sir! Mark
I was lucky enough to get a bottle of Tomintoul a few years ago her in NY. My wife brought it home from a high profile wedding. I wasn't educated in single malts back then, still just a blend drinker, but it really left an impression on me at the time. I can't seem to find the company here in the states though and didn't get a reply from them when I inquired about availability here in USA. Anyway, great review, and interesting ideas at the end. I always enjoy your reviews Ralfy. It's what you call, "good conversation, with good company." Maybe someday we'll cross paths and share a dram and some banter.
Thanks Ralfy, great review as always. I've not had a telly for 12 yrs now, most people simply don't believe you when you tell them especially the licensing people!
I read science fiction and have done so for some forty-five years. My perspective on things is one of hope. I hope that the human race will finally wake up and cut the crap. That being said, I don't watch television either, and haven't since I discovered RUclips eleven years ago. That's where my entertainment and education have come from in that time, and since I'm not bombarded with advertising and marketing I find myself not buying many things that I don't need... Now that I've rambled on, I recently finished a bottle of the Tomintoul 14 and found it to be very subtle, like you said. I still feel like I missed something. Maybe I should have done some half-speed noseing and added some water. Maybe I'll come back to it in four years...
YAY! Gave up T.V. over 9 years ago and find so much time to do other things; like write 4 books. Like Tomintoul as well! Thank you for the reviews. "Forgettable blur..." LOL
Consider this... You could have a Flat-screen that's used as a display and you could have a little "hockey puck" sized AppleTV network gizmo like I have (mine cost me $69.). If you have the gizmo and the screen you can watch on-demand movies for a very modest rental fee. Notice that's not cable and there are no TV channels. No subscription fee. What you see when you turn on an Apple TV is very slick, very impressive, somewhat like an iPad display with Icons. One of the Icons displayed is RUclips, so you can watch RUclips videos on your AppleTV and Flat-screen. The quality is great, and it's quite nice to relax in a comfy recliner and watch the RUclips videos in your house on a larger display. I displayed my favorite Ralfy video to my entire family that way... We all were gathering at my house to watch a special Football game, we had some time to wait, and we had all kinds of great snacks out (think veggie tray, etc.) and I wanted to show my Dad your "Intro to drinking Scotch Whisky" at the Bonaparte Pub. We were all gathered in my living room with my flatscreen TV there, so I called up RUclips on my AppleTV, and I searched for and found your video. I played the video for everyone to introduce them to my new hobby (sampling fine Single Malt Scotch). Everyone thoroughly enjoyed your video. So, prior to the big game, here in central Vermont, USA, *you* were what's on TV. In my opinion a true high quality presentation and show. Thanks for making these great videos. P.S. Can you find a way to make your intro video from the Bonaparte Pub so it shows up first when someone clicks to look at your channel? I highly recommend that video for newcomers. It is the best intro to our hobby, the best video for that purpose on our planet. You're the best!
Thanks for deciding to share that concluding & potentially controversial story, Ralfy. I've recently started paying attention to the lectures of Linda Moulton Howe, one of the most thought-provoking and credible of the ufologists in my opinion! I've had my own unusual experiences through the years, some of the most intriguing during stone-cold sober meditation practice. The bottom line: while we have to always be careful to assess our own perceptions, it's safe to assume the universe is teeming with life. Those of us with sensitive senses may be in a position to detect that life in areas where orthodoxy least expects it.
I'm aware you dont own a TV but hearing what you have just said makes me think you may have seen the Unacknowledged which I recently saw on Netflix. Very interesting indeed! Anyway...a 14yo Speydside....A Balvenie maybe or lesser known distillery....look forward to your next review. Cheers
Thank you Ralfy. I really like Deanston 12 an integrity malt at a reasonable price in Australia. How does this Tomintoul 14 compare? I’m about to try the Deanston Virgin Oak. I like Bunnahabhain 12 as well.
Ralfy the celestial objects must have aligned as the inro to this vid is particularly relevant to my wife and I. Only days ago we have commenced somewhat of a digital detox. We were living too much in the "virtual" world. TV and things like the "News" really has such a negligible impact on us directly so why do we act like lemmings and fill our heads with this ineffectual stuff. We're trying to focus on the 99.9% of life that we can control and that we experience directly... our reality! Intrigued by your close too and look forward to further commentary in this area. Thank you for be a voice of reality in my whisky (and life) journey! Cheers to all "Melodramatic Melancholic Marble Masticating Mortal Malt Mates" ;)
hey Ralfy! u kno wen air hits the ol bottl n aftr a few wks it melows out? well Iv noticed w/TeachersHC the oxygen affects it n the opposit way. it realy brings out th Ardmore sumptin fierce. n th peat Bcomz quite 4ward! Im realy digin ths blend lately! cheers.
Ralfy, I haven’t watch TV for 17 years. Since my daughter was 2 I had to cut that shit off. It was making her dumb. And we both gained so much because of it.
Hey Ralfy! U menshnd L1/4 cask n yur Las revu tht wen it used 2 b good....hmmm has it gone downhill afr all these yrs? or duz it still hold it's own? Thank maltM8
Hey Ralfy, I really want to see your thoughts on The Templeton Rye aka The Good Stuff rye Whiskey. This liquor has old history from the days of the prohibition and its reemergence. Unfortunately, it is only available in the US and Canada last I checked.
Interesting first half when you reviewed one of my favourite Speysides, Tomintoul 14. I have not tried the new batch yet that comes in the new bottling style but have read and watched quite a few reviews who all seem to agree that this new bottling is not as good as the old one. They complain about a lack of depth and slight solvent note to it. (Indeed, teh last time I bought a Tomintoul 10 , which used to be my favourite budget malt, I found it very solventy and frankly undrinkable). It was interesting that you seemed to enjoy the 14 very much but then confused things with that relatively low Malt Mark. I do NOT like the packaging and art work on these new bottlings. The colours look like they have used a printer which is running out of ink. I agree that that "Glenlivet" reference should be removed! The packaging plus the Glenlivet refernce all contribute to making this product look cheap! This is terrible shame as the whisky is very very good, far better than the similarly priced Tomintoul 16. Incidently, Tomintoul is one of the most commonly found single malts here in Israel. Angus Dundee export a lot to Israel. It's one of the very few brands where the entire range is available almost anywhere here. We also see a lot of Glencadam, Tomintoul's sister distiillery. Ironically, both these malts are pretty much under the radar in the UK as you know. I know that you don't buy NAS but the Glenlivet Nadurra Peated is really very very good showing a lot of complexity. They say that they don't give an age statement as the batches change so often. I don't accept this. A distillery the size of The Glenlivet has the capability to print batch, distillation and bottling ages of the youngest cask in the marriage on its labels but chooses not to as it does use a lot of young whiskies and think it will scare customer base away. From my personal experience, both in North America and Israel, Glenlivet marketing strategy seems to be aimed at a particular segment of wealthy but ignorant Americans who buy (and give as presents), whisky purely as status symbols in order to to show off. As long as the whisky looks good with caramel colouring and is very sweet they are happy, In my opinion, the Tomintoul 16 and 21 are aimed at that same American market. The 14 YO is not. The 14 YO is those who want to taste the real Tomintoul without the Caramel colouring and non-chill-filtered full mouth fill flavour.
Hi Reb, I had the Tomintoul 14 a couple of years ago and liked it a lot. We are both members of the Glencadam fan club. It's amazing that they aren't better known.
Random question....not related to this whiskey....but was wondering... would someone who enjoys islay scotch likely enjoy Talisker Storm? Saw a bottle on sale at the local liquor store and was wondering.
'the humanoid collective' - the words of a man who knows the value of a good whisky when he sees it, also I suppose lots of people (not Ralf) pick up their 'shit' from this very, dear, channel

My 3 favorites are Bunnahabhain 18, Macallan Edition 2, and Ardbeg Corryvrecken right now. To put it in context, I didn't really like the flavor of Highland Park 12 although I was able to recognize it is quite complex. I'm a faithful subscriber and love your videos!

I love the restaurant in Tomintoul with outside tables. Very optimistic! Stayed a few times in August (bike tours) and heating is always on.
So U were the guy

Great review this is the ralfy I like start off saying tv is shite then reviews a whisky then talks about aliens keep Em coming
Never tried a glass of this Malt, thanks for the review Ralfy.
I got a bottle of their NAS Tlath for about $30 before tax and I'm quite impressed with the quality for the price.

Absolutely excellent review. This is a Ralfy classic.
Good to hear Ralfy saying he's getn a bit fed up with Scotch now and Loves the new Irish Whiskeys on the market 😉😇
Wanlockhead is the highest village in Scotland. Just up the road, literally up, from me in Dumfries and Galloway.
I have a TV, but I use it to warm up my bath towels, works great!

Hi Ralfy, have you tried Henri Bardouin? I thought it may be right up your alley.
Best wishes-
I don't have a TV either, @Ralfy!
Hey Ralfy, I really want to see your thoughts on The Templeton Rye aka The Good Stuff rye Whiskey.
This liquor has old history from the days of the prohibition and its reemergence.
Unfortunately, it is only available in the US and Canada last I checked.
KA 237, is it, really? search templeton rye controversy. isn't it designed by artificial flavor scientists and is not even a straight rye :-)
Interesting. Didn't know that.
I mean, at least they didn't claim it was straight rye.
KA 237 they were forced to change labels. and issued a non-apology.
Have you tried the English Whisky from Norfolk recently Ralfy? It really is superb stuff.
He reviewed it years back. Quite liked it if I remember.

Not as good as the Talisker 10 in my opinion. Better to go for Ledaig 10 or Lagavulin 8.
We got rid of out tv too for ten years. We didn't miss it. atb. snack.
Haha, I watch you on a big TV screen, though 😊📺

Ralfy, before you record your re-reviews do you watch the previous review vlog?
. . . no, so as not to be influenced in the new review.
Brilliant!!! Master Malt Mentioner!!! I'm cutting the cord soon...

Hello Ralfy,
Do you have 3 recommendations for someone who is more at a novice level and willing to pay more if the quality is good for it?
My 3 favorites are Bunnahabhain 18, Macallan Edition 2, and Ardbeg Corryvrecken right now. To put it in context, I didn't really like the flavor of Highland Park 12 although I was able to recognize it is quite complex. I'm a faithful subscriber and love your videos!
Hi Thomas, I'm not Ralfy but the initial answer to that question is how 'much more' are you willing to spend. If you go to the £50 mark you have many more options.
Welsh Toro
I'm willing to spend up to $100 here and there and up to $200 maybe twice a year.
. . . Glenfarclas 12yo ! good option, all th best with your malt-mission.
Love the reviews
Moi aussi, gave up on TV 3 years back, I like a good comedy, documentary but they are few and far between. Id rather learn something new or listen to music these days.
Well said Ralfy - TV is complete shit - hence me here, right now, watching your reviews....which aren't complete shit. Cheers 🥃🥃
. . . happy to share the malt-moments !
I have a TV....but it's rarely on. Movies, Hockey or American Football, really just an excuse too eat curry and drink beer.
any chance we can not discuss ET and how you dont like TV and just stick to the malts?
Why? If you want straight reviews there are plenty of other whisky reviewers out there.
Complaining about what you watch to the person who prepared the content is hilarious. Just don't watch. You think he's gonna change because... "Josh doesn't like it".
And. Avoid news!
For once I regret to say I disagree with the review😫. I've tried various Tomintoul whisky, including the 25 yr. I found them pretty bad. I couldn't find the complexity , flavours you found. I found them , fiery, bland, cereal, no impact on me. I wish I had spent my money on a Deanston 18, Arran 14. Still....., got to try them. 😜.
Malt Mention: Malty Megalodons.
. . . now on the M-mention list thanks !
s'appning ralphy
I don't have a TV and I haven't watched it for more than 10 years :-) but I spend the same time watching crap on the web unfortunately
👍❤️🥃
Tomintoul - pronounced Tom-in-towel not Tom-in-tool, just sayin' ;)
Sorry Ralfy but I find your views about the news and TV in general very superficial. There are enough quality programs to chose from, just don't watch the junk.
I bet you are watching a lot of youtube (like I do too) where everyone can make a video about everything without their facts beeing verified or their sources checked.
What I'm trying to say is don't judge the medium, judge the content.
Raymaster7482 Well said.
Raymaster7482 good points though interesting to note the best shows (in my opinion) are all on web based 'channels' like amc, hbo and netflix etc! News also seems more polarized than ever on tv and in papers. Korean broadcast and print is the epitome of pseudo propaganda for news.
