Maybe differentiate between travel lanes and watering lanes. On a grazing dairy, for example, a travel lane back to the milking parlor is necessary, unless a portable milking parlor is used. That doesn't mean the lane has to be used for access to water, and it doesn't mean the cows can have constant access to it. Lanes can give amazing flexibility and quick, labor-efficient access to many/all areas on a ranch at any given time. We strip graze off of our lane using Argentine walk-under gates, which allows us to adjust temporary paddock size with more precision. We also sort and load cattle in our lane, which eliminates the need to bring the herd in to a working area to sort and load. For us lanes have saved countless hours of labor and provided a lot of return on the minimal investment required to install them.

Sounds like the travel lanes are working well for you. Can you describe what an Argentine walk-under gate is?

@@Ranching4Profit I've also heard them called "riser gates." I use a 2" PVC pipe with a notch on one end. I pull the pin from the (single wire) lane fence, slide the PVC over the poly post, put the wire in the notch and raise it up, then put the pin back in the post, which holds the pipe and wire about 8' in the air. Then the cows walk under it. I can have a gate anywhere on my lane, or anywhere on the ranch where there is a single wire. The cows need to be trained to walk under it, but that doesn't take long, and once some of them know it, they show the other ones how. Depending on the post spacing, I might also have to remove the pins from the posts on either side of the riser so there isn't so much tension or as sharp of an angle, it also increases the width of the walk-under area.

@@bgotschall Nice. Looks great. Thanks for sharing. We have several alumni using those and reporting good results. Thanks for the bonus video!
