  • Turbo Leaking Oil ? Common Causes Explained.
    #garrett
    #duramax
    #cummins
    In this video I removed a garrett turbo off an engine while doing other repairs and noticed oil on the intake side of the turbo and in the intercooler.
    A lot of people would assume the turbo charger needs replacing. That might not be the case.
    Turbo oil leaks can be caused by many issues outside of the turbo. These include, incorrect oil level, high oil pressure, restrictions in the return line, excessive crankcase pressure and restrictions in the intake among other problems.
    There might not be anything wrong with the turbo. I hope the tips I shared in this video help people save the cost of replacing a turbo that may not have anything wrong with it.
    This video applies to any gas or diesel turbo system, cummins duramax and more.

      Im in the same boat haha. My service mechanic found it on my truck's 200k km service. Oil on the intercooler from the turbo. I sent my turbo to a turbo specialist. Hopefully he says it's good. Also, my service mechanic told me that the truck's air filter was fking dirty. So I think that caused the leak? Because the turbo is guaranteed to last at least 200k km.

    Thanx, that helped me so much..
    I've got a - Ford Transit Mk7 2.2 TDCI - 2008 Reg.
    Main problems Injector one (brand new) or cylinder one causing issues..
    I bought the van few weeks ago and basically giving it a full check over..
    I know that when I bought it that the tappets/lifters were loud!
    But I never expected the previous owners brand new injector being the culprit!
    But the engine cuts out when I removed electric feed! So, I know its deffo the new injector or cylinder..
    After removing the air filter (looks like gollum) it's that dirty!
    But I noticed the turbo inlet pipe was either very lose or not on at all!
    So, I removed the pipe fully and both the inlet pipe and inlet to the turbo was caked in oil residue!
    The van is about to go in for a full service on the 19th Oct: (new air filters - oil change and so fourth)
    Also to finally add! As I quite clearly forgot! But the van basically had no oil when I got it and has been leaking what oil left fast/heavy.
    Head gasket is all good 👍🏼
    (My thoughts to accomplishment)
    So! 》
    Get injector 1 & injector chamber cleaned ✅️
    Remove and clean turbo✅️
    Clean inlet pipe✅️
    Plus- New oil, Air filter, Diesel filter! All with the van's full service✅️
    🤞🏼It's all good and I'm a winner🏆
    🚐💨}💨 beep, beep
    Bare in mind this is the first time I've learnt properly how to fix the actual engine block and main components!
    Compared to just changing an exhaust or air filter..
    All learnt off RUclips in the last 2 or so weeks..
    Pretty much know how to strip an engine 🤗

    Thank you for this video, it was really helpful. I have just one question...Lets say there was too much oil pressure due to a bit too much oil put into the engine and there was a leak on top of the turbo near the seal and near the intercooler. If there is less oil or normal oil level as no excess, will the seal and the leak that happened go to "normal" or not?

    Great video and VERY informative. I drive a Ford 2011 6.7l powerstroke and only at idle at a stop light my truck will start smoking from the tail pipe and it goes away when I drive it. It doesn't miss when I'm driving it and it has lots of power like it did when I bought it new. I changed the ccv box on it which is like the pvc valve and oil levels were perfect and I pulled the oil cap and they're wasn't no milkshake color to it and the coolant looked fine and the truck has 112k easy miles on it and oil and filters have always been changed when they're due and I drive it like a grandmother drives her car, I don't beat on it. I did retire the truck for 2 years in my driveway back in 2019. I thought maybe a injector went bad so I changed the fuel filter and filled it up with that seafoam and ran it for a while and it still smoked at idle. I also checked the intercooler for leaks and it was good. Do you think that it could be a internal turbo seal that might have cracked while in retirement? I'm a muscle car gas junkie but this is my first diesel. Sorry this turned into a novel. Thumbs up on your video buddy. 👍

    • @shanersmechaniclife3164
      @shanersmechaniclife3164  2 года назад

      Thank you very much. Have you pulled the intake piping from turbo to the air cooler and looked for oil? Do you get a puff of smoke on startup? Valve seals maybe? Let me know what you find.

    • @williamsantiago7303
      @williamsantiago7303 2 года назад +1

      @@shanersmechaniclife3164 The intake piping to the intercooler has a very very light mist of oil in it but nothing to write home about. When I first crank up the truck there's no smoke, it only happens when it reaches full temperature and only at idle when ya come to a stop light. I did change my ccv box and the factory one was still in great condition and when I installed the new one the smoke got worse and then while i was working on it i decided to flush the antifreeze system and installed a new thermostat and I noticed that the smoke was worse with all that I did to it. The factory thermostat runs cooler than the one the Ford dealership sold me. Do you think from sitting up for 2 years and running it every 3 months until it reaches full operating temperature, do you think that maybe the oil return line in the turbo could be clogged and all that oil doesn't drain out fast enough from the turbo at idle? I also changed the air filter too. When I retired the truck i retired it with a fresh oil change and ALL NEW filters and always with a full tank of diesel but I did replaced the fuel filter last week just to make it was still clean and it had alot of wax on the bottom of it and it was a reddish color from that diesel extreme additive or maybe rust. Anyway my next move is to take off the turbo and look at all the lines running to it. I really appreciate you trying to help me. I'll let ya know what I came up with. Could I damage it more while running it in this condition? Again thank you for your help👍

    ❤ good one mate this is exactly what happened to me as you said earlier in the video with the oil level. My oil level was way over the max level … before that fateful afternoon from work on the highway. The smoke was devastating the fire service had to attend to me at the scene … the car is still parked . What is the fix in my case?? Preciate ya

    • @shanersmechaniclife3164
      @shanersmechaniclife3164  Год назад +1

      Hard to say without seeing the vehicle. Was the oil overfilled, or did the level rise because of fuel dilution or antifreeze? How is coolant level and oil color? I would try draining the oil down to proper level and try starting it. See if the smoke gradually gets better. Engine may need replacing. , Safest thing is to take it to a certified mechanic due to the fire hazard. Let me know how it works out for you. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Hello friend, I have a 2018 Ram 2500 with the code P0299 turbo under boost, I already changed filters, checked the variable geometry turbo and it slides well. I replaced my boost sensor but the pressure is 0.08 to 0.12 psi but it should read 2.5 psi. Would it be a matter of checking the intercooler?

    • @shanersmechaniclife3164

      I would check closely for any sign of leaks like black residue around every joint, also check exhaust for restrictions. Let me know what you find. Thanks for watching

    Does too much idle time make a leak? Great video!!

    • @shanersmechaniclife3164
      @shanersmechaniclife3164  2 года назад +2

      Thanks for the comment and glad you 👍 liked the video . in my opinion Idle time isn't very hard on the turbo as it's not spinning very fast provided your engine oil pressure is good at idle. But when you think of it, anytime something is moving wear is taking place not to mention burning fuel and money. The way I look atbit is if your not using it shut it off. Hope this was helpful.

    I am guilty of using RTV on a my drain line recently... I really don't know what I was thinking, it'd be better off without a gasket at all haha
    Any idea if having the stock PCV valve would restrict a gas engine? it has a turbo kit on it that otherwise was never there. And is Drilling out a PCV valve an option? When routing to a catch can and back into the intake?
    Great informative video, probably the best on RUclips. Thank you!

    • @shanersmechaniclife3164
      @shanersmechaniclife3164  5 месяцев назад +1

      Adding a turbo would definitely affect the pcv. Regardless of engine condition there will be more blow by then the pcv system was designed for. A good catch can set up would be a great idea

    Great video. I have a diesel vw engine with 518000 miles with the original turbo. I do get some oil in the intercooler which I drain periodically. This is probably a stupid question but am I overdue for a new turbo. The car runs fine.
