That thing surely does wear your voice out, imagine doing that almost a hundred times a year live like he used to do, very very hard song to sing consistently.
Crawling is one of very difficult song, include for chester self. finaly found great live perfomance. When they still young more energy. Year by year the voice will change, many rocker will face the reality. But this moment will be great histories. We growth together, this song give support for everyone.

Either he doesn't want to use the vocal rasp like he used to because it might be fucking up his voice in the long-run, or he fucked it up already with touring. Either way, the songs aren't the same without that technique, it just sound "empty". IMO that is why they changed the whole genre of their music, since Chester is one of the only guys with real musical talent in the band (maybe Shinoda too with lyricism).
I will admit that he is better at the purely melodic parts, but he simply can't scream anymore. There's nothing wrong with melodic singing, though the quality of their latest music leaves something to be desired.
