Buy nice, buy for life. I got a $1k Karbon ski jacket 10 years ago and it is still going strong. It's much better to have a small collection of nice things than a pile of cheap junk. Hell, it's also better to get used nice things than new junk. I have a used Herman Miller Aeron that i got for $550-ish iirc. 10000% worth. If there is something i want, but cant afford atm, I set my self a year's goal and try to save up. Cutting down on eating out and doing meal prep saves so much $. There is no shame in eating rice and beans or a salad for dinner. Any ingredient can be dressed up and turned into something flavorful which is really the only metric that matters.
I don't mind spending money on expertly crafted, perfectly designed items that will last (and I have quite a few!), but I will never pay absurd money for a completely average item that just has a "fancy" name slapped on it. 😉

As soon as you step away from "known" brands you can find a world of incredibly made, perfectly designed gear that comes from passionate people.
@rokrok27 hermes and Ralph Lauren are an example of high end designer brands where the price is not just the brand name but the quality and craftsmanship compared to mainstream "luxury" like Luis Vuitton or balanciaga where its Chinese made crap that is purely just the name brand that you are paying for

I completely agree that its more worthwhile to get a quality well designed product that will last a long time, but I think its a little unreasonable to start thinking about the 'luxury price' as more of a requirement. If that exact same bag was 150 instead of 1500, there's no way that he would ever think twice about it. I feel as though some like the idea of a 'premium' product more than they do the actual product itself. From my perspective, if there's some amazing product and it will last 10x as long as that other product, or say maybe is definitively more functional or aesthetic (i.e. adds some sort of value) sure I'll pay 10x for it. But now its like they won't even consider a product that is 'normally priced' because obviously that means its bad quality right? Have to go for one 10x the price, the 'premium', 'higher-quality' option. Even if it is not objectively better in any way. I remember reading somewhere that for certain products (especially in fashion, where almost all the measurements of value are highly subjective), high prices on luxury, designer items is a necessity in order for the consumer to be able to appreciate the product. Of course this isn't all-encompassing, I like my dollar tree t shirt alot, but I think this is a pretty interesting concept, and I am most definitely victim to as well.
