When I saw that black and white photo of my 74 Charger wrecked in the 76 500, I remember watching that race with my dad on Wide World of Sports on Channel 7 here in NY. Once you guys left Mopar (or rather, Mopar left you), it wasn't the same. Thanks so much for sharing all of your memories.
Unocal Oil, Used it for many many years, worked at a 76 dealer all through the 70's almost bought the dealership, remember when Unocal 20/50 racing oil first came out. Thanks for this video, never knew their oil took out the King ( my racing idol). I hope to meet the king some day, he is on my bucket list.
For the Silver Anniversary 500, I was the guy emptying the trash cans in the pits. Richard won't remember me, but my cousin, Albert Hinkleman, became close friends with Richard and Kyle. Richard gave Albert a personalized pocket watch that Albert CHERISHED. Aunt Iva didn't let Albert keep the watch; it went straight to a safe deposit box. I would like to let Richard know that Albert is no longer with us; his 4 pack a day habit caught up with him, and I don't know who has Richard's watch, these days. Thanks for letting me reminisce some really cool memories.
Richard looked like he had them covered in the 83 Daytona 500 until the engine Blew but he was walking away from the field until it happened. Great Video guys
Would have been an 8th Daytona for The King. But there were several things about that race or leading up to it. Cale flips his new Monte Carlotrying to break 200 mph. Bruce Jacobi had a bad wreck that left him in a 4 year coma. During the race, Darrell Waltrip had a wreck where he spun, hit a guard rail or dirt bank and wound up flying back across the race track. Bobby Allison tore up 2 cars, first in the Clash and then during a practice run before the 125. And Cale won in a Pontiac Lemans.
From 1988 thru 1990 when I worked there, Dale used to have us save the empty Unocal 76 oil bottles. We would go in the truck or at the shop and fill those oil bottles up with Mobile One Synthetic oil. That way when we added oil to the car at the track it looked like we were adding Unocal oil. Dale told me that a lot of teams were doing that same thing.
I was at Rockingham in '83 when Richard broke the losing streak. Then, he won at Talladega in May. Fun times. Yes, that Hardee's Huskie was a darned good burger!
Holy cow!!! I never heard about this oil situation before!! Fascinating!! Ya'll just keep getting better!! And Timmy... thanks a lot!! I'm trying to diet but NOOOOO!! NOW I WANT HARDEE'S!!!🤣🤣🤣
This is a great video-maybe my favorite yet! I know how 1983 was very much a mixed season. Indeed, you were very apt to say: "The best of times in February 1983, the worst of times in October 1983" but I never knew that Maurice brought people in to help run the show after Dale Inman's departure. I also never knew how much the 7-11 sponsorship deal meant for Petty Enterprises being a viable and competitive two car team. That must have driven the excitement for the 500! And wow, what a treat to see that Kyle and Richard were in the hunt together as contenders! And oof and ouch, that must have hurt with the oil mess-up. FYI-Kyle ran in the First Twin 125 (finished 3rd), Richard ran in the Second Twin 125 (finished 2nd.) Thank you Gentlemen also for smashing the nonsense that a lot of the NASCAR RUclips community runs that Richard Petty stopped being competitive after 1980. That has always frustrated me because it's just not true. And this video is proof. Well done. Great video! And great to cap it off by mentioning that 1983 win at Rockingham. That win is special to me. Thank you again! -Joe
Wow! I have never heard that about the oil causing the engines to fail. That was very informative and entertaining! Did Petty Enterprises send a bill to Unocal oil for the costs of the engines?
My great-grandfather had a saying when he was bent: Dadgum the dadgum thing. That was the 83 500. I really dug the orange-green-white 7-Eleven colors that season - more than I did the red-white-blue colors of 1984 and beyond that seemed to just wash out with all other RWB cars.
Wow, the oil was responsible for the blown engines. THAT's the kind of "inside" stories i like to hear about. (At least it wasn't as bad a deal as the year they went to the 500 with engines from Dan Gurney.)
That one still hurt's, but nothing compares for this old "Mega Petty Fan" to the Heart Wrenching pain of 1976 😖!! Even if I live to see 100, I'll never forgive poor Ol' Bill Fleming, for announcing to the entire world "Petty is going to win it!!" Then of course we all know "The King's Chariot" plowed to a halt 300-400ft short of "The Daytona Line" ( shout out to KP's awesome tune "Ol King Richard" 😏) car won't re-fire & David putters on across the finish line at about 35mph 🤦 Honestly though, the main thing i remember most about 1982 thru 86 is, Ned Jarrett picked Richard to Win bout every year & bout every year, Richard would be leading win his engine blew, or his right front tire blew, or some other thing happened & BOOM, he was out of the race 😭 I also remember my Father declaring the first half of the 80's as being "The Petty 450 mile engine program" of course the big problem was the race's were 500 miler's 🤷🏻♂️
Keep ‘em coming! I love that Petty Blue song too, maybe yawl could talk about how that came about. Thanks
Remember the engine failure s but thanks for explaining the oil problem ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for all the support Amy!

More great info! I remember the race, but was not aware of the oil issue. That's a heartbreaker.
GREAT HISTORY DETAILS .......THANK YOU VERY MUCH

Oh, that was a GOOD ONE! I do love these, behind the scenes, stories. I had no idea that it was the oil. MAN🤦
Thank you for doing this channel.

The names that worked there is impressive.
No doubt!
@@pettybrothersracingThat's the truth. It's like a master list of all the NASCAR mechanic legends.
I was born in November of 1983 it was a good year for me.
Great story guys, I remember that race well Hardee's show car 🏆 😊😊😊
Thanks Gerald!!
I appreciate the in-depth details of many of these events, packaged neatly and delivered cleanly.

I went to that race and remember how disappointed Richard was. He said he didn't really have to lift in the corners and had everyone covered.
Didn’t know about the oil issue. That sucks.

Who does the intro song?
That angus thick burger is pretty tasty
Was there ever anyone tougher than Cale?
Unfortunately, that is racing.
