Fun fact of the day. This is all a modern interpretation of the manual of arms we used in the late 18th century. Up until Valley Forge continental forces used the 1764 manual which is British. After that we used the Stueben manual, which was the British manual simplified. In none of the manuals is the command “aim” given. You cannot aim with a smooth bore musket, it’s too inaccurate. “Present” is the command given to direct your fire for most manuals of the time.

They do all this stuff for exact movement (They would not do that) then fumbling with the manual arms.
@@BattlefieldCurator Ya, plenty of videos around and we do have the actual book that says how the drill should be performed. Ever hear the phrase "a flash in a pan" to describe something that would seem ready to succeed but doesn't? That's what just happened, literally. In flintlock muskets, there's a pan with powder that's ignited by the flint, which then ignites the main charge in the barrel to shoot the projectile. It's likely the powder ignited in the pan but didn't ignite the main charge. Basically, it misfired. It was an incredibly common issue with flintlocks.
Benjamin Franklin hired a Prussian military officer to drill the Continental Army at Valley Forge. The same Prussian officer also wrote the first drill manual for the US Army.
