    I loved the big flashing letters on the set, similar to Jeopardy!

    I was in college and watched this version regularly - I think I could watch once on the Indianapolis NBC station and then an hour later on the Terre Haute (IN) affiliate.
    I agree about the new, sleek set and while Swann wasn't up to par, he was no Rolf Benirschke. I'm assuming part of the problem, too, was NBC's affiliate clearance problem.

    If Bill Cullen had quit smoking and was healthy enough to be on the show, this version would have lasted much longer.

    I remember this show since I was 12. It was a throwback to the original show and it had a few hosts. I saw the Alex Trebek one and it was good, but it didn't last that long. After the show's cancellation in 1991, NBC decided to replaced the game shows with reruns of TV sitcoms like the "Golden Girls" along with reruns of "Full House" for a brief summer when it was originally on ABC, but it moved to NBC for a brief summer. I remember the promo for "Full House" when it was on NBC with the catchy rap song saying "'Full House' is on NBC Daytime". That brings back memories. Unfortunately, reruns of "Full House" on NBC lasted for about a brief summer until it went to syndication that same year. "Full House" was sandwiched between Bob Goen's "Wheel of Fortune" and "Classic Concentration"

      Zach Horan And this was the same year that "Action 52" was released for the NES and it was a complete garbage. All 52 games and it was all terrible, and it came with a price of $199 which was very expensive back in 1991. A lot of people never bought that game then, because the game was broken.

    I only ever remember seeing episodes of this with Trebek hosting - his hosting the three game shows at once is among my earliest game show memories. (The only thing I don't remember is which network Jeopardy! would have aired on that point in my area, though I wouldn't be surprised if, like the other two, it too would have been on the NBC station.)

    My local NBC station carried local news in the 90s TTTT timeslot. Never carried TTTT. The 1990 TTTT was taped in Burbank, the first time it was taped on the West Coast...their earlier versions were taped in New York City. Mark Goodson was 76 years old when he hosted the two episodes Trebek missed. Goodson died in 1992 at age 77 from cancer. Not sure if Goodson can handle hosting on an ongoing basis with his age and health in question.

    I love that theme, too- I put it on my phone. (Allegedly, there's an unused vocal cut like the 1970s theme, but I've got no clue where to find that.)

    10 months ago I left a comment that Lynn Swann was athletic director at Southern California. He was on the job for 3+ years before resigning under pressure on 9-9-2019. From what I'm reading, he was about as bad at his job being the USC AD as he was at hosting To Tell The Truth.

    HUh? The Peacock had conniption fits about Lynn Swann when they were still airing Dick Clark's TV's Bloopers And Practical Jokes?

    • @michaelj.kerkau1625
      @michaelj.kerkau1625 4 года назад

      Refer to the Wiki article for this show - Lynn Swann was not only an ABC sports reporter, it was this particular season that their NFL coverage would go up significantly (they had the Super Bowl that season, plus it was the season where the NFL upped from 10 playoff teams to the current 12).
      Goodson probably only picked him cause he probably didn't really have time to waste in finding a replacement, but...to tell the truth (see what I did there), Lynn's existing ABC commitment probably should have excluded him from hosting this in the first place.

  • @ericandy88
    @ericandy88 6 лет назад +1

    I remember watching with Lynn (who did well) & Alex (yes, he did seem kind of worn-out from playing musical game shows). I never knew Mark Goodson himself tagged in to do an episode. That was pretty cool. It made sense he would do it for his favorite show because any others in his output might have saw him stick out too much.
    I kinda liked what I saw of this show, but even then for my easily-entertained roughly 10-year old self, the concept seemed a little quaint by 1990. The new decade was bringing in more viewing choices, via cable/syndication & many network affiliates were preferring talk shows & judge shows. The golden age (for me, anyway) of the 1980s for network game shows was ending & unless you were the unstoppable juggernaut of The Price Is Right, your show had better be good to make those affiliates want to air it.
    This one had potential before all the host shake-ups, but I think it also came about at a time when the networks were kind of just not interested in boosting game shows anymore. When they made an attempt to do so again (as NBC did with a new slate in 1993), their hearts were just not in it. With Jeopardy & Wheel (once Pat returned) going strong in syndication, the networks probably just saw no need to bother...until later in the decade & once again, giving prime-time a spin for the first time in decades.

    Hey Cyndi, I wanna know what you have to say about “The Challengers” with Dick Clark. I thought that format was kind of oddball and a little complicated but certainly gave Dick a run for his money.
    I searched your channel and didn’t see anything for that, but if you have made a video about it please forgive me for missing it.

    RE: PILOT: Maybe they used the hydraulic to convey a respect of the past two-level set, but say we're up to date now. Also, I don't think those steps were built to scale - each step looks too narrow to walk on or hold much weight. I've seen worse hosts than Klein. RE: 1990 VERSION: I like this version too, and I think Lynn Swann was a good host who had the best rapport with Kitty. As to its cancellation, I read a TTTT staffer say its ratings were "so-so" and it was up against The Price Is Right on CBS. It was also comparatively expensive to produce - hiring stars - staff time to research and write all the stories. Plus, to settle some lawsuit NBC had with ABC, NBC was given the change to run re-runs of Full House free of charge for a period of time. Who would turn down the change to air a show that costs them nothing? Now, where can we fit that in?

    In 2017, NBC needs to put a game show in the daytime line. The only game shows in the daytime slot is CBS - "Lets Make a Deal" & "The Price is Right"
    All NBC got is Today & the expanded Today + my Miami station has news at 11 am (for one hour) I'm NOT JEWISH, but I will "PASS OVER" NBC DAYTIME LINE-UP + ABC is even worst with "THE VIEW" CRAP !!.

      it wouldn't have mattered, when the pilot aired which wasn't that great I bet people who saw it were turned off and didn't watch the series. Those who watch were turned off by the constant host changes.

    9:51 - That's Townsend Coleman, right? The voice of Michelangelo from the original TMNT? Sure looks like him... and I need to know where his episode is.

      Andrew Schroy and Corporal Capeman from inspector gadget

    • @michaelj.kerkau1625
      @michaelj.kerkau1625 3 года назад

      Hmmm? The same Townsend Coleman who also once hosted an unauthorized American Top 40 countdown in 1979 (July 7, the weekend of their Top 40 Disco hits special - which Townsend's station refused to air). And Gordon Elliott would also fill in there on two occasions (9/29/79 and 9/6/80) himself.
      The More You Know...
      But to answer your question - no, that's not Townsend. That's Josh Pais, who was Raphael in the 1990 movie. (Turns out he did the whole role, both voice and performing in the suit - the only one of the four to have the same guy cover both parts, not including stunts.)
      I too would like to know which episode that is, though.

    Gordon Elliott did host another game show, "It's Your Chance of a Lifetime", one of the big money quiz shows in the early 2000s, but it only lasted five episodes in June 2000 on Fox. Currently he's the executive producer and announcer of the daytime talk show "The Chew" on ABC.

    About the next show you'll cover, "The Krypton Factor", I myself have never seen the kids version which will be the main focus of this review, but I have seen one episode of the original Dick Clark-hosted version from 1981. I found it to be fairly decent.

    • @Eminem200183

      The Dick Clark-hosted Krypton Factor was pretty good on Friday nights. It would have been funny if Clark would had to promote American Bandstand the following day like he would had on the $10K/$20K Pyramid, since all were airing on ABC
