It amazes me when I look up something for growing because it is supposed to be super expensive but then you find it in grocery stores. There he became a keen amateur naturalist and described quite a few rare species sending seeds he found to botanists in Germany Oh also, your pronunciation of malus niedzwetzkyana was surprisingly good

When you cut a slice out of that first one I saw it out of the corner of my eye first, and legit thought for a second "why is he cutting a tomato?" I've honestly had tomatoes that were not much redder than this.
I have really grown to appreciate your knowledge, honesty and experience in reviewing interesting and exotic edibles! Your discerning tastes make you a true fruit gourmet !
I actually recently had one of these and couldn't figure out the taste! To me it tasted like a combination of something floral and citrus. Definitely not cotton candy though.
Your mission to try all the edible fruit on Earth is amazing. I'm trying to photograph all the wild plants in Britain but that's not nearly as adventurous.
I found these at my local Sprouts. They quickly rose to the top of my commercially available apple power rankings. I found it similarly tart and crisp with a good flavor. I thought I tasted a little bit of a "red" fruit flavor but nothing dramatic and nothing that I couldn't be sure wasn't my mind playing tricks on me. Still, an excellent apple and one that I would prioritize when looking for an out-of-hand or baking apple.
Probably not grown in miami. Probably just distributed by Miami fruit and grown in Pacific NW. Only very few apples can be grown in Florida and I think only in northern Florida.
Fantastic as I expected. I would never expect a less than spectacular review from this creator. My grandsons and myself watched a lot of RUclips (especially this year) and out of the hundreds of creators that we enjoy, “Weird Explorer” is one of maybe six or seven creators that we ABSOLUTELY must watch and try to never miss an episode. Thank you so much for the continued experience of enthralling educational content. I wish good health, happiness and all the best to you and yours!
I’ve had a pink apple variety and loved it. The variety I had is deep red on the outside and a gradient of pink on the inside. They aren’t very common. Usually you can find them around the holidays or close to Valentine’s Day.
My grandparents had an apple tree in their backyard that I think had light pink flesh. My grandmother made pink applesauce every year. It was delicious and so were the apples. It might have been pink pearl apples. My grandma grew all sorts of cool stuff in her yard and garden. She was a bit of a stern Swede, but she adored little kids, gardening, baking, and a few handicrafts.
It would be cool to get one of your friends and have them do blind taste tests with fruits like this. See if they can tell the difference between a regular apple and the pink one.
I've had the pink ones and they were delicious. But my favorite "weird" apple is the "water-core." The flesh is nearly transparent due to being so saturated with juice!
So glad you reviewed this! Similar to blood oranges, some of which are fully crimson flesh and some have just a hint, I figured the same was true of pink fleshed apples. This one seems like the real deal and on top of it you are commending the flavor so I’ll definitely look into these!
@@annamichos3752: Reminds me of Bowie's Thin White Duke period, where he claimed to subsist on nothing but red peppers, milk, and cocaine. Also amphetamines. _Lots_ of amphetamines.
I've loved the red-fleshed apples I've tried, and yeah, they've got a distinct lemonade flavor, I wouldn't describe them as berry, but it's like their acid weighs heavier in the citric than than malic acid.
The problem with exotic fruit flavors is clickbait. 99.999% of people that see those articles are never going to eat one so articles can just get away with lying
I think part of the problem is explaining the flavor to someone who has never tried it. I saw a video once describing the taste and it will taste somewhat similar or have the same texture to this but will also have it's own flavor. Some good examples is the ice cream banana he tried was the same consistency as ice-cream according to Jared. Another one is how some described this as pink lemonade where both taste more tart according to Jared. Basically they are saying if you like this you may like the one you are trying but if you don't like this you may not like this.
"The _Malus_ ... (notes species name) oh hell..." Lol all biology students can relate to this moment. Would love to see someone make ruby chocolate dipped versions of this apple and the pink pineapple. :)
The name of this apple amuses me, since apples are already part of the rose family. Though how we get both thorny vines and bushes along with hefty trees in the same family is... I find it amazing. Diversity is awesome.
Hey Jared, if you like the Hidden Rose apple, try to find Lucy Glo(golden-green skin), or Lucy Rose(red skin). Both have red flesh. We have em down here in Florida but they’re apparently from Washington State. I have the Lucy Glo right now, and man they’re amazing. Honestly does have a slight hint of berry flavor.
I've been wondering about these for a while. You describe its tart and sweet qualities, and flavor really well. Can you speak to whether it has a crisp quality? Thanks for your awesome videos!
I just tried one of these last week! Or one very similar, they called them Lucy Glo apples, but it looked identical. They have them at Sprouts. They didn't have the glos when I ordered again this week, so I grabbed a couple of the red skinned versions (Lucy Rose). For the Lucy Glo: I found it really delicious, but I don't taste any of the weird flavors others mentioned, either. Still definitely worth getting if you can find it! Great video, thanks!
There are other pink things done through breeding too. A good example is those pink lemonade blueberries you reviewed was done through actual breeding. Another blueberry that is supposed to be pink is pink popcorn but all the pink popcorn blueberry plants I bought were heavily diseased and never grew so I yanked them. I never knew there is a pink or red apple though. In regards to the taste I think some people in other videos when I was looking up mulberries said it best where they said that when someone says x tastes like y they are telling you it tastes similar to this so if you like y you will like x and if you dislike y you will dislike x.
I work produce at a market in SoCal. We have apples that look like this. The ones we got are called LucyGlo. Very good, I do think it tastes a bit like berry. There is also LucyRose, which look like Galas on the outside, have pink on the inside, but looks more like that unsuccessful apple video you didn't upload.
We actually now have some apples that have pink around, right under near the skin, but gradients to regular white at the center Its pretty recent around here from what ive seen, ive been curious, nice to know where it comes from, very cool
Hey, I’ve been a fan of yours for a few years now, and I was wondering if you have ever considered making a weird explorer discord server? If not, would it be ok to create one run by fans? Thanks!
We grow the Pink Pearl and it's my daughter's favorite. It has almost a floral smell and a very pleasant taste. They are a tricky apple in terms of determining when they are perfectly ripe. Get it too early, kind of puckery. Too late, mealy. Just right, pleasant, sweet and delightful.
I discovered pink fleshed apples totally by accident at my local grocery store. There were two different types. One had yellow skin and the other had pink skin. The one with yellow skin was labeled as Lucy Glo. I didn't realize till I got it home and cut into it that it was pink inside. Really took me by surprise! They are honestly now some of my favorite tasting apples. They are very similar to cripps pink or pink lady apples. I love super sweet, super tangy, flavorful apples.
I saw the pink pineapples at H Mart for $14.99 (despite online claims they're hundreds of $$). The farmer's market in Santa Cruz, CA had a booth in the fall from a collective of heirloom apple growers. I think they had at least 20 varieties, including a few different red apples, some of which have a strong berry flavor. There was also a golden variety that had a strong pineapple overtone. You may have a similar heirloom apple collective in the Northeast.
I remember seeing ads decades ago for apple trees that were supposed to bear fruit that was red on the inside. So this variety may be new, but red-fleshed apples have been around, as Jared said.
Ive noticed some residual redness in some types of apples here...didnt think too much about it though. They have have high slight perfume tart notes though, but very very slight.
I hate to be off topic but I need to know. Is there anywhere I can go to buy a whole Baobob? Of all the fruits you've shown off, the baobob has captivated my interest the most

Do they go brown when cut? It would be interesting to see how this apple is placed irt all the other apples - royal gala, pink lady, fuji, envy, jazz, delicious, kanzi etc.
There are also red fleshed pears (e.g. Summer Bloodbirne), but they seem to oxidize [brown] quite quickly, and I have only seen them on the USDA germplasm repository website, not in plant catalogs let alone grocery stores.
Red Rome apples are commonly red on the interior, as red as the skin. Not always, but many of them are. Red Rome apples are my absolute favorite apple. They have just the right amount of sweetness and tanginess, as well as being both an excellent cooking apple and excellent direct eating apple.
