  • Named one of the BBC's "12 Artists Who Changed the World," Ilya Kaminsky was born in USSR-controlled Odessa, now the Ukraine, and lost most of his hearing at age 4 from poor medical care.
A lawyer by training, Kaminsky began writing poetry in his teen years, first in Russian and later in English. His two collections, Dancing in Odessa and Deaf Republic, have won multiple awards, including the 2020 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, given to works that make important contributions to understanding racism and appreciation of rich diversity of human culture.
Shawn Sebastian Naar reads an introduction to offer context and background on the poet and the poem.
