the project is maturing nicely... have you ever designed or built a hugelkultur for landscaping?

I will be doing one this month, planting trees for a windbreak and screen from the road in front of my house. Thanks for the demonstration. I will be using mostly conifers because that's what I am cutting from the yard.

Did something similar with a whole load of wood chips on top and I put a thermometer in and it read 35° C which is probably about 78 or 80°F. I guess not too sure but anyway it has maintain that temperature for over a month now, and it’s mid December in the northern hemisphere zone 8 this as well be a temperature is around 0°C (32°F) so what I’ve done is put three of my small Wormfarm totes On top, and now we have passed the shortest day of the year. I’m going to plan vegetable seeds and then cover them with clashes on top of the mountain so that they can take the advantage of the heat whilst benefiting from the increasing day length of the seat into thinking it’s spring. I’ll cover with a couple of inches of compost before.😊

Nice project! I have been working on a very similar looking 40m long hugelkultur, to close the side of my land. Its main purpose is wind break and road noise reduction. The land is located about 1km away from a motorway, some days when the wind blows strong from that direction, it would bring a warbled mess of truck noise, as there is not much in between the road and the land. I have been clearing the forest undergrowth on the other side of the land for wild fire safety and stacked it all on a huge long pile. I reached 3m height at some point, but in a year time it all sinked to about 1m haha. I guess i will just keep going until it remains solid at 3m before planting any trees on top. Anyway, keep up the good work!

it sounds (no pun intended) like a cool project and a great place for a large hugelkultur! Just keep piling and shaping as you go. It seems like you could establish the grade on the side closest to the road and start planting some vegetation to get it started. I've planted a few acorns and have some oaks started now... will plant a variety of sizes to give it the established woodland look I'm after... another five years and some on will think it's a undisturbed woods! Good luck with your project!! Cheers!!
