I'm just going to point out that they technically did form alexandrite. If you look at the name you will see that is the gem that was created, they are going to look different as the gems you made on that are not exactly the same as the gems from the show. Also if a different, amethyst pearl and garnet fused they won't look the same as the crystal gems alexandrite.

When Garnet and Opal fused, the gem type was an Alexandrite, and it did have the same colors (hair, skin).
So did Pearl and Suglite, Sardonyx and Amethyst.
