    Hi, psychologist in training here. Autism is not a mental disorder it is a developmental disorder. It sounds like splitting hairs but the genesis and treatment for developmental vs mental disorders are very very different. Both are considered different from cognitive disorders as well. It's important to be aware of these distinctions to prevent confusion and stigmatization

      Hi, Autistic here.
      Autism isn't a disorder. It's a different, but equally valid Neurotype. Stop trying to use deficits to describe us.
      And the best "treatment" is just treat us like a human being instead of your infantilized science project that can't think for themselves.
      We're tired of this.

    • @clickslefttoe
      @clickslefttoe 4 месяца назад +173

      @thehuntressdanni2972 that same "science project" you're demonizing is what discovered different neuotypes in the first place. As someone with ADHD (I know its not autism, but there are many similarities and they are often conflated), it IS a disorder. That doesn't mean it's bad or negative. It's just our brain's way of making us unique.

Technically, if you really look into the definition of a "mental disorder" it does fit that category. Autism affects everyone differently, that's why it's called autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). Some people have it severely so they need extra care and support. Some people have it more "mildly" and don't need extra help. I’m autistic. I’d disagree. I’m on the high functioning spectrum but honestly I struggle with a lot of interpersonal skills and knowing I have to work harder towards attaining skills that come normally to others is important to know. I’d say it’s valuable to know that it should feel normal to struggle more on some things so that im not just going through life confused.

      But we are though? Being autistic is not bad, it’s just a different neurotype. It does disable us in day to day life, making things like social interactions and navigating a world that’s not built for us, difficult. Personally, being autistic, I have sensory issues. If the environment I am in is very busy, it stresses me out and I just can’t function, and I would consider that disabling. That’s just one example of things I deal with daily. The only time you shouldn’t use the word disabled is if you are doing it to try to insult a person, or if they specifically told you not to. Yes we’re different from neurotypicals, and we are disabled. Disabled is not a bad word!
