  • Air Asia is one of the more dominant airlines in the Asia region; it is also a significant customer of Airbus. Let's explore the fleet of Air Asia, and its subsidiaries while also taking a trip down memory lane and focus on some of the more odd aircraft the group once flew.

In their new A320 NEO flying from KUL to DMK, the cabin was so much quieter that I could make a WiFi call from the plane to my mum's land line in KL. I had a tough time convincing her that one could actually make a cellular to landline call from a plane with little background noise

I've flown with them often, mostly between Melbourne and Bangkok. They are efficient and friendly. 👌

I flew Air Asia X on one of the last flights from Gatwick to Kuala Lumpur. They were, at that time, one of the only airlines that followed the strict hand luggage rule of 7kg per passenger. This reduced the size of some people’s carry ons to the proper size making boarding quicker and there was enough room for the hand luggage (clue in its name HAND LUGGAGE). Too many passengers these days think its their god given right to bring on large suitcases as hand luggage, thus delaying departures. Service on AA has always been good, even on the 12 1/2 hour flights. No frills airline. Used many times while in Malaysia and if an aircraft is on the ground for more than 25 mins between flights it caused by passengers not the airline. As passengers from the arriving flight are getting off you are being sent to get on. The cabin crew keep the aircraft clean so no need for cleaning staff between flights, most of which are short haul anyway. Personally I feel this is a well run, well oiled machine offering good service at reasonable cost.

I flown with Indonesia AirAsia 4 times and my mother recently flown that airline for the 5th time back to Jakarta from Bali. I suddenly started to get more interest of AirAsia few months after the crash of QZ8501 back in December 2014.

AirAsia’s livery also deserved a spotlight of its own. While today it’s mostly a giant billboard for other brands, there were some really special one-offs during the early years of its operations. As featured in this video, there’s the B747-200 with the first generation AirAsia livery in collaboration with Tabung Haji, the main Malaysian entity that handles Hajj pilgrimage. There’s also a livery as a tribute to LAT, one of Malaysia’s most legendary cartoonist. There’s also the all-black A340-300 livery with Manchester United specifically for long haul flights to Europe.
I hate AirAsia with a burning passion as someone who frequently had to deal with their shenanigans, but it’s admirable they at least went with the times and prioritize a modern, singular fleet. Their older A320s and A321s were mostly delegated to less-frequent domestic routes.

great video, i think it would be a bit useful to have some more on screen graphics though, with so many different airlines it can get a bit confusing

I'm based in KUL and I try to avoid flying Air Asia as much as possible. My last 10 trips on them (believe it or not) had some form of delay or retiming (not to mention some of the flights that were cancelled which I did not count towards my last 10 trips). I don't mind all the self check-in and baggage drop part and their food (purchased) and crew are pretty decent. It's just the operational delays that makes me hesitant to use their services as much as possible.
They are also not always the cheapest when you factor in luggage and meals. Especially the luggage part where it can always add 20% on top of the ticket price.

I flew on AirAsia a few days ago in their main hub, KLIA2. There are so many special liveries. However I only flew on 9M-AQZ

Good for all those passengers. I was a fan and enjoyed at the beginning. 300 baht to Phuket; 60 baht to Khorat !!! With luggage and hand luggage and a cooky+ water on board.
    Nice.
But when they started to weigh each hand luggage at the gate, I felt as a red line was crossed. And I never flew them again. Same as my decision with Ryanair. Good for others, not for me.

I have to say, not my most favorite airline! They can be disorganized and chaotic a lot of the time and customer service at the airports can be sketchy. On board, the crew are pretty good, but the planes are always packed due to the low-cost of course. If you can put up with the cramped seating, its fine for a couple of hours, but anything longer, it ain't worth the pain!

I wouldn't say Air Asia is the most important customer of Airbus in Asia, but being an all Airbus airline, certainly important.
I once flew Air Asia from Malé to Kuala Lumpur, and it was one of the longest 4 hour flights I've ever been on. There was no WiFi, the meal service wasn't that good and I was lucky to carry my own entertainment. It wasn't my worst LCC experience, but I'm not looking forward to flying them again.

Those A320 CEO are mostly without WiFi service. The newer A320 NEO does offer really good quality WiFi which you can even activate wiFi calling on your phone
