Those old ads for actual record players in cars were on the right track for future musical selections while driving! It just took many more tries to get it right! Haha! The closest thing I got to touch screen in a rental car was the 1990 Mercury Cougar I rented. It had a fully digital dash that could change the information on it with a couple of pushes of buttons! @RhettyforHistory After foot injury, I don't have the stamina to engage the pedal all the time. When my cars cruise control failed, I took care of it immediately (70, 45, 77, 55, 42, 66...could not keep steady speed).

I remember getting an 85 (IIRC) Ford Thunderbird that had a digital dashboard. I absolutely loved that car. Had they put the shifter in the console instead of the column it would have been near perfect. She was jet black with a deep blood red interior and 5.0 under the hood. It was a sleeper with just a little tweakage.
I loved those old Thunderbirds and Cougars. My mom had an 84 Cougar and it really was a sleeper but I personally thought they looked better than the Mustangs.
As a kid in the 80s, I always felt like I was traveling through or towards the future whenever I rode in a vehicle with a digital MPH, Fuel Tank, and mileage display. My grandpa once rented a vehicle while his regular car was in the shop. Said rented vehicle had power windows and I was practically floored! When gramps got his regular car back, I jokingly griped about the fact that I had to roll my own window up and down!
It was fascinating to see the digital in the 80s. It seemed like it showed up on more of the luxury type vehicles. I remember being amazed that it would tell you the miles per gallon and miles until empty. Thank you for watching and sharing your memories of you and your grandfather.
Rhett, I enjoyed your car features ahead of their time video. I loved the older cars better because they seemed to last longer, more roomier, had radios and a turn signal sound that l loved to hear, period! Love the safety features, seat belts and air bags, too. Have a fantastic day. Take care 🐎
You brought up a great memory there Brenda. Those turn signals were distinctive and I feel like that helped people realize their blinker was on. I do miss that sound. Older cars definitely had a lot more room in the interior and the trunk. Thank you for watching and sharing your memories!
When I was a kid we had a car in the early 60's that had push button controls. We thought it was about the coolest car around. I enjoyed the video, Rhett!
There were several that had those push buttons on transmissions. Is that what you are talking about? I always thought those were pretty cool. Old Dodges, Plymouths and Chryslers for sure had those. Thank you for watching Leslie!
@@RhettyforHistory Yes it was a Plymouth Fury Station wagon. My brother loved driving it, his friends all called it the dragon wagon (probably because he had a heavy foot)😆
My best friend's father had a Bradley GT (electric) in his garage in the '80s. I mention that he had it in the garage because I never saw it actually on the road. I don't think it ever really worked right.
Thank you Rhetty for History for all your videos and the work you put into them. My favorite 'ahead of their time' car, especially for styling, has always been the Studebaker Avanti. Too bad they were so overpriced.
The Eagle wagon is a whole vibe unto itself. I actually love those. They are so unique, retro, and utilitarian at the same time. With a manual and a straight 6 they were about as reliable as a car can be.
Sadly it seems like the V8s are going. Many of the "Muscle Cars" just don't feel the same. I realize the power some of these turbocharged engines have as well as the electric but it's just different. I also find it funny when the electric guys put an external speaker on their car to simulate a V8 sound. Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts TopGunAce23!
My friends brother had a 1988 Buick Rivera, I had a 1985 Buick Rivera this was in 1998,1999. My 85 had some advanced looking A/C and heater functions. His 88 screen was way ahead of it's time! My 85 Rivera 2 door had 4 ashtrays and 4 cigarette lighters. Body by Fisher. Somehow it says that body by fisher was dissolved by 1984 by G.M. Awesome Video!👍🏻🇺🇲
Those cars were really cool. I had a friend that had one in the 90s as well and I remember just being amazed what all it had in functions. It felt futuristic at the time. Those features are way to common now and even more advanced. Thank you for watching and sharing what you had ZMAN_420!
Sure sounds like a lot of fuel. I watched Jay Leno running his and the engine was surprisingly quiet. Not only that but it was smooth. He put a glass of water on top and there were no vibrations. Certainly can't do that with any other engine. Thank you for watching ahoorakia!
I remember some of these features when they came out. You could have included the Stanley Steamer, a steam powered car in the early days of US automotive history. When automobiles first came out, there were a variety of methods to power them, such as gasoline, natural gas, steam, etc. Gasoline won out, but not for the reasons one would expect. Anyway, there is a Stanley Steamer in display at the Stanley Hotel in Colorado, famous for inspiring Stephen King's "The Shining". A car way ahead of its time was the Studebaker Avanti. The design lived on for many decades after Studebaker closed its doors.
You're right about the steam engine ones. I know Jay Leno has at least one. I saw a video where he was driving it down the road. I would love to tour his collection just once. Thank you for watching Greg!
I still find 1950's, 1960's and 1970's cars 🚗 ahead of their time. They were built out of STEEL, in Detroit, Michigan. They were proudly built, by American workers. Some of my favorite features in these older cars was the radio 📻 and 8 track tape player. I also liked 👍 the square GLASS headlights, and the glow accompanying them while they're on. I also liked the 8 cylinder engine these vehicles commonly had, despite the poor gas ⛽️ mileage. I would often fall asleep to the sound of the engine as we were going down the road. I also liked the style of the tires and rims on them. These cars were a lot STURDIER, and SAVED our lives in the event of a crash. Your friend, Jeff.
I do love the old V8s and they had a great sound. Not only were the cars made out of steel but when they changed all of that it put many towns under throughout the steel belt in America. You may see some plants but not like you used to see. That has made many towns have abandoned structures and struggling economies. Very sad. Thank you for watching and sharing some of what you enjoyed about 50s, 60s and 70s cars.
A high school classmate had a car with a push button transmission. I’ve never seen anything like it. I must have been from the 60’s and we were in high school in the 80’s. That car was made of all steel, it seemed like.
Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts on them. I still love the analog odometer but you definitely don't see those anymore unless you have an old car.
My touch screen stopped working a few months ago so now I can't listen to the radio, plus I don't think I'll be able to change the time. I use my phone as my radio now.
Two things Mazda introduced a four wheel steering 626 in 1988 as well. It wasn't as well advertised as the 1988 Honda Prelude. Also, when a buyer selected the Air Cushioned Restraint System ( GM charged $250 extra on certain 1974-76 Oldsmobile, Buick, & Cadillac models ), the shoulder belts were deleted!
I had a 1987 Buick Regal with all leather and ELECTRIC windows and seats. I loved that car until all the electrical stuff caught up with the beauty of it.
They really were interesting cars. A friend of mine bought one used and I was amazed at what all they had on them. Thank you for watching and sharing what you had Lynn!
@@RhettyforHistory That was the first car that I bought with my OWN money. At that time, my husband and I lived in an urban neighborhood. Whenever I went to the gas station, all the guys at the pump would come over and tell me what a "nice ride" I had.
By far, the Citroen DS, also sold in the USA, in the early 60s, was way way way ahead of its time... and until today, no car has the suspension, moving headlights and many other features.
We used to have a car museum in my town until the owner passed away. I went once a few years ago & there was a Model T & a Tucker car! Apparently only 4 are still around & this one was the only one in North America. It was red violet & only had 28 miles on it. I've always wondered what happened to his collection after he passed. I can't remember the name of the museum but it was in San Marcos, Tx. Edit: It was called Dick's Classic Garage & I was wrong about the mileage on the Tucker. According to Wikipedia it's only .4 miles & has the least amount of mileage of the existing Tuckers. I forgot he also had the Batmobile(60s)! I wish it was still open. I would love to have shown it to my nephew. 🙂
That really would be interesting to know what happened to his collection. I know there are quite a few car museums out there so I wonder if one of those acquired what he had. I sure hope so. Thank you for watching and telling us about Dick's Classic Garage.
I want CD players back, hearing a song on a CD tends to sound better than from your phone. Also when I buy an album, I will only play that until I learn all the songs. I also liked automatic seatbelts.
I sure remember everyone fumbling around with the huge CD binders looking for the next one to put in and trying not to scratch them. Good times! Thank you for watching!
I have to remember to bring my phone, turn my bluetooth on, turn my WiFi on, pray it doesn't update android auto or my car (music won't play until done and screen cannot be changed), all before i can drive.
Sometimes cars were too ahead of their time. My mom had a Corvair Monza You forgot to mention the Bricklin Our 1990 Civic had automatic shoulder belts. However, they kept getting caught on the visor whenever I had it on the side. I consider the Chrysler Turbine and the Tucker Torpedo to be Motorama cars.
The 90s was a time period where the cars had to have either the auto seat belts or airbags. All of the modern safety equipment was still being worked out. People were not wearing the auto seatbelts like they should and some of them had some failures with them after awhile. You did bring up a great feature worth mentioning and that Bricklin is another good one. Thank you for watching TheInkPitOx!
Surely there could be some better designs right? I know there are some creative engineers out there. Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts Bonnie!
Actually all of the EV1's went to the junk yard and crushed everyone of them many people tried to buy them but the company would not let them! What a waste.
Yeah it's like they knew there were mistakes in them and they didn't want that reputation of the vehicle out there. But it still was handled weird and I think many people remember that about the cars. Thank you for watching David!
Iirc, modern Chinese cars have their center console screens fully functional, as opposed to the american ones. They can actually watch videos instead of just listening and don't require weird apps to download. The salesman takes care of it. You just drive it.
There are a few models you could do that with before 2021. You have to do some software updates to get around that on your own. Thank you for watching Kaede!
Can I get the steering wheel from the star car from last starfighter? The blinky lights are cool too. And if possible, could you add the hover and stardrive? 🙏
I think they have all been using a lot of cheap plastic. In the long fun it just doesn't last as long. Especially when it is in the door handle area. That needs to be reinforced with some sort of metal and preferably steel.
I'd add the 1968 VW Type 3 (Squareback, Fastback, Notchback) to this list. After 6 years in production, it became the first mass-produced car to have electronic fuel injection (D-Jetronic) as standard equipment. The price, around $2,000, was amazingly low, perhaps due to a favorable licensing deal with Bosche, which had purchased the technology from Bendix, after is was used unsuccessfully on Chrysler and AMC cars in the late 1950s. EFI was only standard equipment on cars sold in some countries, most notably, the USA, where impending emissions rules threatened VWs traditionally air-cooled engines. VW was going through some rough times during the years (1968-1973) during which the EFI-equipped Type-3 was produced, coming to terms with the fact that the market was abandoning the company's traditionally rear-engined, air-cooled designs. But VW and the rest of the industry learned a lot from VW's experience with the Type-3.
GM crushed all those EV1s,people whom had them had to turn them in.There are 9 of those Chrysler Turbine Cars left,Jay Leno has one of them and still runs
I watched his video on his. I was shocked at how quiet it was and also how it had no vibration on the motor. It was a great video. Thank you for watching Toolaholic7!
@@RhettyforHistory Jay Leno with help from an author wrote a book on them.People were angry at GM wanting the EV1s locked up somewhere where they were crushed at
The Tucker 48 was an amazing automobile dreamt up and created by a driven, optimistic, and very intelligent man. He, and his dream were destroyed by the "Big Three" and their political cronies. Then the rotten bastards stole the some of his best ideas, and most were implemented by TB3 by around 1956-57. Though he kept on, I truly believe Preston Tucker mainly died of a broken heart, more than illness. Its a damn shame too.
Ah...a video that really lights my diodes. Weren't all the EV-1's "repossessed" by GM? IIRC the EV-1's were all technically leased and not purchased so GM had the power to take them back. The cars were then all crushed despite many of their drivers begging that GM to let them keep leasing or even buying the car. GM said, nope, we're taking them all back. They then destroyed all the cars. EV's may be our future, maybe not, but right now they are a huge boondoggle. Future Rhett will talk about how an inept administration pushed electric cars on the nation despite not having an infrastructure to support them causing huge problems for those who bought into the technology.
Ford and Volvo EV's require drivetrain software updates. If you get a corrupt file from the internet when the internet is sketchy say in a parking garage thick with concrete you risk uncontrollable accelerating and this has un alived people in the vehicle.
I like older cars because they all looked different. You could tell what a car was by it's shape. It made your vehicle much easier to find in a huge parking lot! Today all cars look like stupid minivans! I call them kid toters. There is absolutely nothing about them that's trendy or sporty!!!
Pegging cars with snowballs and hopping cars and school busses. Toilet papering the principal house on Halloween. Tossing m80’s into the toilet at school. Never did any of these things I iii just heard of it😏😏🤓🤓

🤣🤣
Haha! Thank you for watching Brian!
I sure would have loved to see the Tucker keep going so we could see what they would come up with next!
That would be interesting to see what he would have thought up on the next cars. Thank you for watching Scooby!
A high school classmate had a car with a push button transmission. I’ve never seen anything like it. I must have been from the 60’s and we were in high school in the 80’s. That car was made of all steel, it seemed like.
The all steel cars were like tanks. They could take 3 or 4 cars out now and still keep driving. Thank you for watching Nicki!
The test screens aren't my cup of Java. I find them more distracting than the analog equivalent
Text Screen autocorrect strikes again
Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts on them. I still love the analog odometer but you definitely don't see those anymore unless you have an old car.
@@RhettyforHistory Yep, a quick scan with analog, now you need to know the menu and what displays. I have to pull over sometimes to tune the radio
My touch screen stopped working a few months ago so now I can't listen to the radio, plus I don't think I'll be able to change the time. I use my phone as my radio now.
I'm holding out for a flying car! Won't be long!!!
I sure thought we would see some by now!
Yep, in my General Motors truck, the airbag still don’t work airbag light is on all the time!
Thank you for watching! How long has it been on?
The Eagle wagon was derived from the 1971 Hornet Sportabout wagon. I remember a family who had a red 1971 Sportabout when I was 9 years old.
Thank you for watching and telling us a little more about what inspired the Eagle mjrodriguez8670!
And the AMC Concord was essentially a slightly redesigned Hornet.
Thank you for watching and bringing that up smittykins!
Two things
Mazda introduced a four wheel steering 626 in 1988 as well.
Thank you for watching and giving us a little more background information!
80's Vibe
And before. Way before. Thanks for watching!
I appreciate you mentioning that car and it's definitely a good one to talk about.
You must've been careful with the visors, then.
😊 great
Thank you for watching Mike!
Please bring back interior color options that are at least as diverse as exterior colors (blue, red, white, etc)
It was interesting to see red, green, blue and other colors on interior carpets, seats and dashes.
Sometimes cars were too ahead of their time.
My mom had a Corvair Monza
You forgot to mention the Bricklin
Our 1990 Civic had automatic shoulder belts.
Thanks for these!
I thought the Aztec was UGLY! So yeah, you can surmise my feelings about cars like the cybertruck. 😝
Surely there could be some better designs right? I know there are some creative engineers out there. Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts Bonnie!
I HAD. ONE. WAY AHEAD OF IT'S TIME
Thank you for watching? What was it?
thumb 👍
Thank you for watching and the thumbs up J_Calvin_Hobbes!
Jazz piano 🎹 comes to mind
Jazz piano comes to mind on cars?
@@RhettyforHistorydon't mind me was watching on mute you do have back ground music
In every car there was an ashtray in every door and a cigarette lighter.
Yes there was. I'd like to see that come back. Thank you for watching!
And you could just pull up to wherever and get a cigarette from a vending machine. No big bro (govt), no big sis (corporations) telling you to show Id
Can I get the steering wheel from the star car from last starfighter? The blinky lights are cool too. And if possible, could you add the hover and stardrive? 🙏
Some say the Aztech helped kill Pontiac. Also, GM used cheap plastics in the interior
I think they have all been using a lot of cheap plastic. In the long fun it just doesn't last as long. Especially when it is in the door handle area. That needs to be reinforced with some sort of metal and preferably steel.
I know of a lady who drove a red Aztec back in 2006. That car was nothing sleek or sexy.
The Pontiac Aztec was a solid vehicle. It was just hideous.
Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts on it Jessica!
@@RhettyforHistory Jay Leno with help from an author wrote a book on them.People were angry at GM wanting the EV1s locked up somewhere where they were crushed at
I’m still waiting for my flying car. Or at least a jet pack.
You and me both! Thank you for watching!
Interesting
Thank you for watching Jessica!
@@RhettyforHistory your welcome
All EV1's were crushed by GM except a scant few donated to universities. No EV1 was ever sold to a customer.
It's crazy how they did that. I guess it was all just part of the experiment. Thank you watching and sharing a little more with us Bill!
the background music sounds very familer to me sounds like the early 80s 90s Music from HBO
Thank you for watching Mike!
Anyone interested in the Tucker car should check out the movie Tucker: a man and his dream starring Beau Bridges.. great movie
It really is a great movie! Thank you for watching James!
The Lagonda stole the idea of the one-spoke steering wheel from the Citroen DS. It was also an awfully unreliable car.
Thank you for watching and letting us know about that connection.
I think they destroyed them to cover up how bad they were. Thank you for watching Brandi!
Toyota known for its good relability doesn't want to install tech that has not be tried/tested and proven reliable
I sure hope not. Thank you for watching davinp!
Ford and Volvo EV's require drivetrain software updates. If you get a corrupt file from the internet when the internet is sketchy say in a parking garage thick with concrete you risk uncontrollable accelerating and this has un alived people in the vehicle.
Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts on the software. Hopefully they have some sort of check in place but who knows.
Electric cars go back to the 1900’s….check in images. They ain’t new.
I cover that right after the EV1. Thank you for watching!
The first electric car actually predates the ICE engines way back to 1832 by Robert Anderson of Scotland.
amc put renault engines in early 80s.126 CI.turbo diesel engine
Thank you for watching and giving us a little more information on AMC.
I like older cars because they all looked different. You could tell what a car was by it's shape. It made your vehicle much easier to find in a huge parking lot! Today all cars look like stupid minivans! I call them kid toters. There is absolutely nothing about them that's trendy or sporty!!!
There are definitely a lot that look alike. Thank you for watching aariley2!
Pegging cars with snowballs and hopping cars and school busses. Toilet papering the principal house on Halloween. Tossing m80’s into the toilet at school. Never did any of these things I iii just heard of it😏😏🤓🤓
