  • Hendrix never ceases to amaze me. There are some gems in every song that give you insight into the way he thought and his musical genius. Be patient because I jumped around a little but you will see what I am doing. I did not go into the solo section although I do touch on it briefly. His note progressions are pure Hendrix, simple but so concise. Below is a list of my equipment I was using to simulate the sound from the album. I just mix and match the pedals I have with my 1959 Bassman amp until I find a tone that is close. I (attempt to) play the song at Jimi's blistering speed at the end.
    Guitar: Nash S-68HX left handed Strat, Hendrix gauge strings, 10, 13, 15, 26, 32, 38. I am slowly getting used to the light strings.
    Amp: Original 1959 Tweed Bassman that has been re-tweeded. Plugged into the Normal channel.
    Pedals: Classic Amplification Vibe-Baby, Dunlop Mini Germanium Fuzz Face (FFM2), Fulltone OCD V.4, and an Area 51 Alienist. All were on at the same time. The OCD adds a little bottom and crunch. The Alienist enhances the Vibe and adds a little treble and clean boost. I always run through a vintage 1963 Fender reverb unit just before the amp.

      The originals are almost the same price as the reissues and still sound better. Just be patient and you will find one. I think the mid '60's black Tolex ones are cheaper although it seems they did not make too many of those.

    I hate seeing these type of videos because it makes me feel like a dumbass. I dont mean any sort of disrespect about the tutorial at all. I love hendrix and all of his songs but when someone breaks it down like you did i can immediately see which pentatonic scales, chords, and techniques that he used that i already know and that i would never have thought of lol. Its like he basically just made it work with pure pentatonic scales and somehow the melodies just came to him. Fuck my life lmfao. Rock on Hendrix and Great video!

    • @millstap
      @millstap  6 лет назад +7

      No, that's a great thing. The same thing happened to me. From the years of trying to learn too many scales, you end up mixing in a bunch of notes into the pentatonic scale that make it sound different. I think Jimi realized the pentatonic scale was a scale for a reason and he stuck by it and made it work to his advantage. I used to always throw in a couple of passing notes on fast passages just to make it easier to play but if you jump straight to the next note in the pentatonic scale (which can be more difficult) you hear the true essence of the pentatonic scale. Of course, Jimi played whatever he heard and played notes that weren't in any scale, just the Jimi scale.

    Sir, I so appreciate your Hendrix/Gypsies Fillmore videos. You do an incredible job. These are a god send! Im also working on Who Knows - Live at Fillmore East, 12/31/69 -2ND set. Some fascinating soloing in there. Have you ever thought about trying that? If you do I want to know!!!

    • @millstap
      @millstap  3 года назад +3

      I have worked on the very beginning of the solo. Jimi's solos are just about impossible to teach because there is so much detail in them. I can usually show some of his signature licks and then you take if from there and use it when you are improvising. Jimi was improvising all of the time so it is a good goal to get to that level of improvisation. That is very difficult and the reason why Jimi is Jimi and we are not. I'm working on Hear My Train from People, Hell, and Angels and will post that next. After that, I may do Ezy Ryder. But I will check out this Who Knows solo.

      I've hardly ever looked at tabs. I guess they can be helpful if they are accurate. I don't see how they can accurately describe every little nuance but maybe they can. I wouldn't mind having some of his cords in tabs because those are the hardest for me to figure out. Luckily, there are many RUclipsrs that explain the chords if I ever need help. I like to challenge my ear and figure them out but I don't always get them right.

    Thanks for a great video! Just a quick thought or question maybe. I know that Jim was a master of not playing the same song twice, but do you think alot of his on the spot things were ideas that he already had and was able to just put them in to the songs that he was doing at that time? Or were they just plucked from thin air? I know that there are some things that just don't make sense on how he was able to do them.

    • @millstap
      @millstap  7 лет назад

      That's a real mystery to me. I have a feeling it is a combination of both. I think he had such a command of the guitar that he could play just about anything he could hear in his head. And what he heard was otherworldly. It was mentioned several times in books that he was hearing music in his head at a young age. That was his gift. And, I think, since he played constantly, that he worked out things before hand and was able to more easily recall them in a split second. They must have rehearsed a lot because it also amazes me that the bass player was able to follow him on some of the strangest progressions. On the blues jams that he plays differently every time, that is just him having fun and trying to see what new territory he can discover. He was always pushing the limits to keep from getting stagnant.

    • @kizone3675
      @kizone3675 7 лет назад

      Thanks for replying. Yes it amazes me that Billy Cox was able to follow him and not only follow him but sometimes stretch out as well. Yes It is truly amazing that no matter how many versions of a live song that he has it is always something that makes the hair stand up in like: "How did you do that, or What was he thinking , or not thinking that he was able to pull that off"! The thing that I really hate though is that we will never know and most of the interviews that I have read or seen he never states anything about why this was played this way compared to that way.

    is your D string the 26 wound or is it just a steel string? its pretty hard to find wound 26, just curious.

    • @millstap
      @millstap  4 года назад

      It is a wound .026" D which is standard in the 10-46 set of D'Addario XL's. I have been making my own Jimi set out of the XL's which gets a little wasteful. I recently tried the Fender Voodoo Child 10-38 set and they are not bad but a little brighter than the D'Addarios. I have a pure nickel set of the Voodoo Childs that I have not tried yet. I might like those better. So I end up buying single .015", .032" and .038" strings to make a D'Addario set. I also have the 10-38 Pyramid set that I have not tried yet. I love D'Addario but the Fender Bullet set is not bad at all.
