Thank you for sharing this amazing musical artefact! I used to listen to this programme every Saturday. Hearing the opening theme music immediately brought back fond memories. It is the sort of track that only someone like David Simmons, with a deep knowledge of the genre, would have been able to unearth. Fantastic programme!
David Simmons bought Donny Hathaway to my attention in the late 70s through his obvious admiration for and extensive playing of his music. I met David at the ldeal Home Exhibition at Earl's Court in 1979. Really nice down to earth guy.
Great to have found this. David and Robbie (Vincent) were the best. Mainstream radio DJs these totally hopeless in comparison as are today’s versions of BBC Radio London and Radio 1. Two DJs who loved what they played and knew so much about the music and certainly in the case of Radio London did not need any producers or god like station controllers like Richard Park from Global telling them what to play and say! How pathetic FM radio sounds now compared to this brilliance. Feel so sorry for the younger generation today who have no idea how great Radio used to be. Driven by people with s passion for music not just bloody monetary profit. Turn this up loud and enjoy!!!! 98% of FM these days just makes me weep!!
This was the first show that I heard Backstabber by the O Jay's on and it was the start of something very special for me, the soundtrack to my life. Respect to Dave Simmons
Dave Simmons was my god in the 1970s . Artists such as Al Green, early Barry White, Philly Etc, were new, His DJ online to the USA was way ahead of the time! His style made other Radio 1 DJ,s out of date. Wonderful to find Dave Simmons here! Why Did he leave Radio 1!
loving this...for us 'not from the smoke' and into soul, this was like our 'only' opportunity to hear new stuff, a lifeline. We would then dig through Blues & Soul (that we had to order from Smiths on the High Street in Melton Mowbray), then try to order the UK releases, and save up for a trip to Contempo Soul Source in Hanway Street, London...happy days. ;o)
Glad you liked it - will upload an April 74 programme in next few days to show what was on the air approx 45 years pre-Covid. I had the luxury of being close enough to the smoke to grab a cheap day return for regular record-buying excursions, plus some mail order. (Try telling that to the kids these days, with their podcasts and mp3s and they just don’t get it etc etc etc)
Wow memories of my expedition up from Dorset to B&S in Hanway Street to buy records for my mobile disco down south, couldn't get the vinyl anywhere down here. Quirky record shop as well think they just had lists of the records on the wall?. Maybe wrong about that but nevertheless. Dave Simmons, B&S magazine and Hanway Street are the soundtrack to my life.
Fantastic to hear this again. I had snippets of this myself, but has been long lost Back then, Dave Simmons was a cool dude Do you have rest of it anywhere . Thanks again
@@greentreetops1 Have posted the other one. I do have more but too big to post. let me have an email contact if you're interested in more (you can delete the Reply post afterwards)
@@gettingmightycrowded Great stuff! Thanks for posting. I did some research on the date of the show. At about 21:00, Dave says he took the show on 3 years ago "to this day." That would be December, 1971, but a feature article I found on Dave Simmons says he started in January 1972. One of the listener letters/comments near 25:50 extends a Happy New Year greeting. At 40:15 Dave himself offers a Happy New Year greeting to someone. We also know it's a Saturday, making the most likely date 1975-01-04. I'd be interested in any other shows you have, and I might have one you don't have.
@@drhyoutoobeGlad you enjoyed it - taken from home-recorded cassettes which have survived pretty well. Some had dates written on them, but not always reliable.
I'm sure this is where I first heard James Brown's Funky President as a 15-year-old. I then bought it for the disco I ran with my mates and played it at every chance I could. I remember liking the music, but not Simmons' DJ style.

Glad you enjoyed it. David Simmons turned a lot of people onto a lot of music that they still love today. Probably about time I added another show!
@@gettingmightycrowded He did, and yes please do add another of his shows!
@@MusicLover-mx4kf Jan 74 show just added.
@@gettingmightycrowded Brilliant. I will really enjoy listening to that!
Jean Stanback on Radio 1, amazing....I used to love this show, too, so thanks for posting it up here...
