Hard to believe she's been gone for 27 years. You are something special when Bonnie Raitt says of you, "It was hard to do Walking Blues, for instance, but I was not born with a voice like Mavis Staples or Jo Ann Kelly.".
THIS is a white blues singer. It takes a lot of nerve and total reverance and understanding of the vocal style of the black country blues masters to become one. She truely was a great blues singer.
Reverence alone, seems to me. She partakes in IT, as Don Byron did in klezmer. And even as Perry Como did in Kol Nidreh. The Blues is not someone's - or some group's - infringeable possession, but a beautiful creation. "Here!"
Thanks for pointing that out. I went and listened to one of Son House’s Death Letter performances. He had more than one take on this song, and here’s Kelly coming up with her own synthesis, which I dearly love. One reason the blues go deep is that they are inherently fluid, there’s always room for change and adaptation.

I love the acoustic sound on this, her voice isn't bad either.

So so good
Although the title is Walking Blues, this song is an amalgam that includes lyrics from Son House's "Death Letter"
