Breakdancing has become an official Olympic event.
The first DanceSport to appear at an the global Games.
South Korea boasts some of the biggest name in this realm, and is looking to bag gold at the Paris 2024 games.
Han Seong-woo went to find out how they are getting ready.
From the streets of New York to the grandest stage in sports.
'Breaking', also known as breakdancing, or B-boying, will make its official Olympic debut at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
And South Korea's top dance crew believes the country can take home the world's first Olympic gold medal in breaking.
"I'd say we have a 50 percent chance of bringing home gold. Those are great odds. I mean... it's like flipping a coin."
As well as running Jinjo Crew, Kim Heon-jun is also vice chair of the newly formed breaking committee in the Korean Federation of DanceSport,
The committee will oversee the athlete registration process and the organization of the national team... leading up to 2024.
"We plan on formally requesting the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee to include breaking as a competitive event at the annual National Sports Festival."
The Paris games will have two gold medals at stake: one for b-boys and one for b-girls.
16 dancers in each event will battle it out, one on one, to determine who is best.
Breakdancing legend Kim Heon-woo, who goes by the stage name "Wing", has been a judge at international competitions and expects the Olympics to be judged on criteria such as fundamentals, originality and musicality.
''Above all, I believe the dancer who can flawlessly execute all of their moves will come out on top."
Bboyrankingz.com currently ranks South Korea at number two in the world and has two Korean dancers, Wing and Hong10, ranked in the top five individuals ... raising hopes that, with proper support from the government, the gold medal is within reach.
"Looking back at all we've won, we had always thought to ourselves, 'If this were the Olympics, we'd be national heroes'... But now that it's a reality, the time has come for breakdancers to finally shine."
"With their eyes on the top prize, B-boys and B-girls nationwide will be training their hearts out for the next three and a half years, hoping for a shot at Olympic glory."
    Han Seong-woo, Arirang News.

I'm from the States, and I am completely behind South Korea for the 2024 gold in Paris. They've taken this "US" sport and made it their own, taking it to a level that the rest of the world can only attempt to emulate. Hoping to see them perform live in the summer Olympics! Love and respect to all South Korean bboys and bgirls, from Germany:)

If they stick to power moves, this will be great. I really hope they don’t start showing 6 step and style on Olympics. Air flares, 90’s, halos, elbow spins, etc. variations and combos of these are very difficult and like gymnastics very few people can do. Shuffling feet uniquely is something anyone can copy and for the average person looks silly rather then impressive. If someone can learn to do what they see on tv in 5 min. It shouldn’t be Olympics. “Watch as he does the worm, then grabs his nuts. Now he’s going to shuffle his feet to the beat of the music and finish with a simple yet awkward freeze, perfect execution” please no.

@@blackbeltjones2903 I feel it’s a about the audience. Mostly hot Asian girls specifically. I really don’t care about break dancing as a hobby or sport. Did it in the early 2000’s and I sure the hell picked up what I wanted. With power moves. Today, I’m older and can’t take injury risks. But more importantly, good looking girls just aren’t into it anymore in the U.S. Piano is a much better usage of my time to impress the women I’m interested in, or at least get their attention. Or money and owning a house. Cars seems to no longer be a factor. To be honest, I think 100% of hot women stay at home and hide from men unless they take the risk of eating out. Maybe being a waiter is the key today.

    • @lexevo
      @lexevo 7 месяцев назад

@@blackbeltjones2903 Oh, that might not make sense how that is related to our discussion. Power moves are what impresses. The only people that care about style are other breakers. Take street performers. You have 1 crew doing style and foot work. The other is busting out one handed air flares, chair flares double halos, etc. who’s going to have the crowd and a fatter bucket full of money? I saw one street crew and only 1 guy did regular windmills. It was the only thing that got some oohhs and awwws, which is said that’s the best they had in 2022.

@@lexevo I think there's a place for less flashy techniques because it's ultimately a form of dance, not merely feats of athleticism. I imagine they'll judge based on athleticism and creativity. Creativity exists to a large degree in style. Best of both worlds is what I'm getting at, basically. You see that mix of artistry and power in figure skating and gymnastics.

@@OAT86 Dance is an art, and as such, it’s form of expression. For that reason I think that any form or artistic criteria is made by subjective standards, dancing judges use their own experience and knowledge to make a decision, he determines who’s a better dancer based in his appreciation and understanding of the dance, but at the end of the day, it’s subjective. Sports in the other hand, are physical disciplines that involve skill and performance, and specially: rules that are fixed and non negotiable (If the surfer’s board tip touches the wave, he/she loses points, if an athlete steps outside a line, he/she can be disqualified, subjectivity has little to no room in sports.
