I'm not even from Lima, I'm from Toledo, but for some reason I could not look away from how much change 50 years gives to a place. Really puts sentiment in perspective.....
I can’t believe lima used to be cool. I wouldn’t leave lima if it was the city it was in the past. It brings me so much pain to see lima the way it did.
From my understanding many small towns in Ohio went downhill, Mansfield, Canton, Zanesville, Portsmouth, Steubenville Dayton, Akron and Youngstown. Too many manufacturing jobs went overseas. Many people left these cities. Be optimistic it may take years or decades with some new ideas they will come back ! Tough times never last, but tough people do !
alot of the cities or towns you listed are or have been taken over by drug abuse problems that have been present for 30+ years, causing those ohio cities into a downward spiral

Also back in the day you could go downtown and walk just about everywhere, why isn't the Kewpie in this video? It was the center of many peoples' visits downtown?
My father had a bar downtown called the New Yorker, and also had a Clark station in the early to middle 60s. I'd love to find photos. Thanks for this video.
I love the view at about 12 minutes into the video. My father knew Lee (owner of the Wing Ding) quite well. We left Lima in the 1950s, but returned home every summer until 1970 to visit with relatives and friends. Dad always made it a point to stop and get me some ice cream and have a long talk with Lee. Both of them loved talking about baseball and the "good ole days" in Lima.

3:50 - I remember that Pangles grocery store. My grandparents lived in one of the duplexes across the street. We would go there a lot when I was a kid. The duplexes are still there but they are all boarded up now.
The Milano Club burned down and I believe the Alpine was simply demolished. Milano’s relocated to across from the Lima Mall and still does good business.

I do feel like it was more beautiful back then and they made Lima look worse as they tore down certain buildings and the worst thing they ever did was pull up the brick roads They made Mila look so pretty. Dixie highway went through LIma from southern Ohio to some where near South Toledo Ohio ///old 25// I-75 run much the same as old 25. As 75 was being put in. We had to detour often as 25 was bisected by 75.

I'm new to Lima as a RTA driver. My family is a founding family of this city. Wow, great video and greatly depressing. I've asked so many people in the few months been here what to do for fun here. Answer to the individual is nothing, than pause, bars and bowling. First oil rig, locomotive giant, oil refinery, US army currently reliant on this town for its tanks. So much unknown history and future. Much work to be done. Why no rail passenger service? Trains going by constantly everyday by RTA station, all over city. Where are all the global warming nuts? Never on the buses.
I like the photo at 7 minute mark on W. Market St. with three young women walking in 1945. I do know that my mother lived with other young women on McKibben St. during world war II and got married in fall of 1945. I know where she worked, and we know the other friends she lived with. Then they did not have to find rides into Lima, at least not every day. It was a walkable town.
It started to die in the late 70s. After Clark Equipment bought out BLH for the patents. Clark only ran it a few years before moving everything overseas. There were lucrative government contracts, but it was all about the patents. Before it was BLH it was Lima Locamotive works. Lima started to stagnate in the 70s and never recovered. 1990 population was around 45,000, the last census it was around 35,500. I was one of the many that moved out of Lima.
I guess I noticed it easily because I lived on McDonel for many years when I was growing up. In that same picture, you can see Lima Central Junior High School (which I attended at the time it burned.
Interesting. I was a photojournalist with The Lima News from 1981-86, when it was on High Street. I still have some vague memories of the town. When I first moved to Lima, there was a neat, old-style Sohio Station on, I think, Main Street. Even then it could have been a museum piece. For weeks, I thought about stopping to photograph it. Then one day, I drove by…and they were tearing it down. That story is pretty much Lima in a nutshell. Fortunately I moved to Annapolis, Maryland where I’ve lived ever since. We appreciate our history here, and haven’t torn down everything that was good.

Qupie hamburger was a great Thing. Along with LIma FLAC. Fair radio. Sohio, the Ford engine plant. LIma loco works. The globe coach co . Easy access through the terminal for nickle plate railroad. LIma state hospital. All served by a good cab service. Also two drive in theater s. A mall. I -75/ old 25. State route 65. Don't for get LCC or Textron. Wlio, wima, and wcit. LIma news.

Big Joe Eilerman was my first Sgt. John smiley Davidson was my platoon Sgt. Sgt williams retired. Tks ps tell me is Dan Zimmerman still working in LIma.? Ask him if he liked my Cuban report I worked hard on it.

If you go to all the other States in the country you will see the same type cities that look even worse. Ohio still a top 10 state, no. 6 GDP.

Some of the best made school buses were made by Superior Coach in Lima, Ohio. Rode one as a kid, owned one as an adult. Made an awesome camper.
