The kids with their hands on their hearts hit me. I was there age on 9/11, in 4th grade. Still makes me cry when I think back. I remember everything from that day.

I always hear about the heroism of SEALs, Green Beretts, Rangers, Marines, Delta, Army, etc...they deserve it. But Firefighters are freaking heroes too. They run toward danger like it's nothing. My co-worker is a part time Firefighter and he has that thousand mile stare in his eyes. He NEVER talks about his experiences!

I went to work that morning via the christopher street subway stop, the first plane had already hit. a bus with either police men or port authority personell, i can't remember, crossed right in front of me and for a split second i thought 'these guys will probably be dead within the next two hours'. still to this day i have no idea why I thought that, no one in their wildest dreams expected the towers to come down the way they did. i guess it was a clairvoyant moment. RIP! on a side note, i truly love the sound of bagpipes!

I attended five FDNY memorial services late in 2001. Not funerals; no bodies. Heartbreaking. Will never forget the camaraderie amongst the firefighters. RIP all, and Dennis Smith 1/21/2022

Thank you PIPERS for your spirit and soul which flows through your instruments toward all those who have passed or fallen. Stories connected to 011 have had the 'comments' turned off by YOU-tube. Stories like this DO connect the American Spirit. Evrn people in America do not want us united!

The thing I always was bothered by is the importance that’s put only on the FDNY and NYPD deaths. The civilians are used to tell the story. Every single death at the site is equally important.

The bagpipes are a more poignant farewell than a 21 gun salute, in my opinion. As the song says, "Did they beat the drums slowly Did they play the fife lowly Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down did the band play the last post and chorus Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest"

Nothing makes me prouder to be a Scottish American than the pipers! They were there when all of us five kids married, my brother and my dad even wore kilts when he wed! We had a lone piper at my dad’s funeral years later. I find that music of great comfort. Thanks for this lovely piece. ❤

It's strange. As a non-american with a perspective of history I had never seen the 9/11 attacks as anything but inevitable. You don't engage in coups, proxy-wars and bombing over 36+ countries without it coming back to you. But I think that only in my later age do I finally understand why americans so dearly clinged to the 9/11 attacks. It's a unifying feeling, it is sorrow and anger turned into pride and resolution. It's a moment to stand for what is "right", for honour, for mourning, for respect. I only now understand it because of how tired I've become of the world, of its politics, only now do I truly see the beauty in the aftermath of those attacks. It makes me sad because it tells me how sorrowful and tired all those americans must've been at that time, two decades before I was. I pity them. I pity us, as a species. Because it'll get worse before it gets better.

I’m american but understand completely. I do think that in many instances those countries turned to the US for help. In other instances, no they didn’t. This world has been complicated even more by industrialization, politics and, for thousands of years, religion. If only we could learn from the past, yet as a species mankind seems damn set on repeating it
