    The traditional problem for Slovakia was not the quality of their top players, it was their depth because they had to pick from a limited pool of talent. So, once in a while they had a successful run but struggled in the meantime. However, something clicked lately under the leadership of Miroslav Satan and their current U20 and U18 generation looks promising. It's one thing for such a small country to produce one or two draft picks and quite another to produce twenty of them in the same year. However, if they keep doing what they do, their men roster can return to respectability in a couple of years. It would be a shame if this didn't happen because Slovakia is one of the few European countries where hockey is even more popular than soccer.

    • @bassmanjura
      @bassmanjura 2 года назад +9

      Traditional problem of Slovakia after '89 is corruption. This penetrated into hockey as well, and with more people getting rich, talent and hard work many times become not enough to get further, to get a chance. Parents who can't afford to ''donate'' will see their kid on the bench or in B team. This is already on top of the hockey being expensive sport in general. I believe the Satan is the one who can start the change of mindset there. Otherwise hockey in Slovakia will be doomed.

    • @avaclear7219
      @avaclear7219 2 года назад +3

      @@bassmanjura plus the reality of things is that it is still corrupted. Your kid won't play until you pay the owners/trainers/managers to get the kid into big games. And the saddest part of it it's the generation that was successful before like Satan, Gaborik, Hossa et all doing it.

    I thought he was phenomenal. His decision making was so crisp, so confident, it just felt like whatever he decoded to do would happen. Thats not normal for a 17 year old playing among men. He played like a man possessed by a veteran. And his size. This is not a small kid, he is already sized for the show and is not intidated by the big bodies.
    I really think he will not only be a sensation in the NHL but he is a strong part of our future as a nation. Can you imagine in the next Olympics? Our top D line will be Cernak and Fehervary (who is having a heck of a season on the caps 1st line) with Nemec and Knazko taking the 2nd line. Up front we're going to have Slafkovsky, Chromiak, and Mesar, all of which will have at least had a couple years of NHL play in. And thats not even mentioning Dvorsky. Its going to be nuts.

    i was also thinking about the factor that you already highlighted - top skilled guys tend to prefer smaller space on the ice and they are able to play under constant pressure with minimum mistakes. Slafkovsky did some development during last year, he is very big and strong on the skates with great stick handling and he has high hockey IQ - do not underestimate this aspect as well. He was dominant in every Slovakia's game, but when it comes to his draft chances i am predicting him something between 3-5 place. I can imagine even higher pick, but i am not sure if his position as LW helps him to reach it

    Slovakia is slowly approaching the world elite.
    But the truth is that the "golden boys" project was created in Slovakia, which was supposed to return Slovak hockey to the elite. (seems to be successful)
    It is a project when the biggest Czechoslovak and Slovak legends returned to Slovakia (Gaborik, Satan, Stastny, Hossa...)
    and started training young players.
    For example, Marian Gaborik used his own money to build a huge hockey academy in Slovakia for 8 million dollars, where every young player gets hockey equipment for FREE, and professional coaches attend to him.
    Zdeno Chara returns to Slovakia over the summer and helps young defenders.
    Jaroslav Halak, on the other hand, helps in the "Young Goalkeeper" project, where he passes on his experience to children.
    Satan became the president of Slovak hockey, and he builds stadiums where children have equipment and free admission.

    Not slovakian, just a devils fan going on a rabbit hole of Slafkovsky because I want them to draft him. Knowing that he is pretty much the pride of slovakia and the entire country is watching, I want him even more. He’s damn good.

    They almost didn't take him. But what a move it was, the team knew what they were doing. Might I also add, he was on the 4th line for the majority of the tournament, but got bumped to 1st later on.
    He was so hungry, so energetic, he's really enjoying the game and you can see he's a step above the others. The stickhandling has always been there, but he's really developed as a two-way player. The 7 goals, it's magical. Some of them would be "buffet" goals like he would say, empty net and all that, but, even when you take this away, for a 17 yo guy, he had a great tournament. The whole team had. That defence, and goalie Rybar averaged 96.58 % save percentage. Mental.
    Slafkovsky was taking shots, collecting pucks, towing hauls and scoring goals, and that's all you could want from him now. I think the NHL scouts are watching, closely.
