    Love my PowerBlock P90s. Bought them 17 years ago and they been the best investment I believe I have ever made.
    They are old but still get the job done. Only maintenance is some wd-40 along the diagonals every month to keep them
    from sticking.

    I originally had a pair of Ironmasters and paid nearly $1,000 for them, including the 120lb add-on kit. After working out with these for a couple years, I bought a used set of Powerblock ProRexans on Craigslist for $200. I've never looked back. I sold my Ironmasters, and now exclusively use Powerblocks.
    Your ProRexans look great. You did an unbelievable job in restoring them. I notice you opted for the dark gray instead of the original black. Very very nice.....

    Thanks for responding! You can tell the original pro rexans are one of their best models if not the best. I read a good thread on amazon and bodybuilding.com where someone when in depth about the differences between all the models. The rexans are machined and one solid plate vs the stacked coins in the current models. And these were made in USA similar to the USA elites. The feel is different too. The handle sits much tighter in the first block/15lb rails vs the newer sports. I’ll keep contacting them for the additional handles and pins. I found some possibly on eBay at a premium but it will be worth it. I’ll let you know how it turns out. Love these rexans though

    i was in the same situation, i had minor rust on some of the plates, some plates also had slight scratches here and there. since in the winter, my garage builds up moisture, the plates on the powerblocks will become wet. so i decided to strip the paint off and paint them with rust oelum paint, so i would have no issues of rust building up again.

    thanks for giving me the tips. I actually sold them today but picked up another pair for of 90s for 100. I really got lucky on those. It took me 2 weeks to restore those things and I dont think I will do it again lol. I even painted the white part of the handles with rustoleaum hammered and also use rustoleam appliance spray paint for the dumbbells. They turned out pretty good but I didnt get to put them to use. I was kinda sad for letting them go since I worked soo hard on them.

    For those who restore older power blocks like I did..
    One thing I will suggest (actually suggested to me by the company), is to "lightly" wipe down the plates with Armor All from time to time. This will help keep the blocks from sticking. I do this and it works great.

    • @rj5822
      @rj5822 2 года назад

      Any specific type of Armor All? Think I would have the same results with some PB Blaster or silicone spray?

    • @sdvid
      @sdvid  2 года назад +1

      @@rj5822 you’re probably correct. Anything that will leave a thin slick residue for the plates to slide when rubbing against each other.
      I use original Armoral protectant. Once I wiped them down, I didn’t really need to for several years later. I guess if you sweat a lot on them, you may find you have to do it more often. 😁

    • @rj5822
      @rj5822 2 года назад

      Ended buying some Silicone B'laster. It helped reduce the sticking. It's not smooth. Just requires a slight wiggle and the plate slides out as opposed to 2 plates coming out together

    I used a little hand held mouse sander by Black and Decker. I also sandblasted them but my sandblaster is not very powerful so I only used it once I got the majority of rust off with the mouse.
    The paint I used is Krylon Rust Tough HAMM-R finish which gives it a nice rugged finish.

    Man that's cool. Not sure how you find them so quick. All the used sets I have ever found are just as expensive as new (close). With the exception of these of course. Mine are some of the first off the line and have the polished aluminum handles (not white). The appliance paint was probably a very good decision. After all, its an epoxy and much more rugged like powder coat, than paint. I'll have to keep that in mind next time!

  • @sdvid

    I am sure I am too late but, I personally did not wipe them down with anything but a damp rag to get any dust off (after sanding them). Mineral Spirits is an oil and can leave a residue and keep the paint from making a good adhesion. I would not suggest it personally.

    Hi Sdvid! I wanted to get your opinion. I have a set of 85lb rexans with extra 5lb handles. But I still long for a lighter set that goes up 50lbs in 5lb increments. I found one on Craigslist for $100. But it’s pretty rusted. Would you go through the trouble of restoring this? I did several restorations based on your video to several rexans that came out great but never on a small set. Or would you just keep the rexans and extra handles to swap out for 5lb increments? Im looking for quick weight change increments in 5lbs. Thanks

    I bought another set of powerblocks (elites) that are in great shape. But the handles/grip part of it are sponge like and seem to stretch when I use them. I used gorilla glue on the other pair I restored. Just curious did you use what did you use to restore the grips if you did so?

    Awesome! I got the 50 set just like your bigger one here, and bench for $ 50 from a friend.
    I have a question 🤔 my clips are metal like yours only I can't trust them for some reason the weights come off track during certain movements so I lost any confidence in them.
    I looked on the website they have it looks like plastic clips for sale now. They look like a better fit like once they slide through there seems to be a lip that seems it may bite & keep it more secure.
    Only thing is is I don't see my model that looks just like yours only less weiggt. But the pic shows the newer model. I need to call them but my question to you is do you think the new clips under Powerblock Pro will fit my older set. I'd love to solve this Problem its holding me mack from training any movements that cause the clip to lose its bite. Its scary when im working the weight up only to have the inside rotate because of these metal clips.
    Sorry if this makes no sense ill be calling them. I've just not seen any model looking like mine yet until I just saw your set.

      For the 90LBS set in good shape, I suppose you can get around $300.00-$500.00. Doing a quick search on Google, I see there aren't too many used sets up for sale, especially with the 50-90LBS expansion. I guess this is a testament to how much people who own them really enjoy them. The new Elite Series is $800.00 for the full set (without a stand). I mention this because the Elite series is the same as these original power blocks. I must confess, I have not been exercising and haven't lifted weights in a few years now. However, these are super convenient and take up so little room that I seriously doubt I will ever sell them. Every so often (when I have too much caffeine) I will go do a set of curls, shoulder presses, etc... but that is about it. This video was made 12 years ago, and the blocks are still in the same great shape as when I restored them (minus a few scratches here and there).

      sdvid great video! I’m in the process of restoring a set of rexans like you have. I plan to sand any existing rust spots, do you just wipe them down or blast them to get the small particles off? I’m thinking of a black hammered rustoleum for the finish. Luckily I have another set of Rexan handles I can use instead of the old ones that came with this set but I believe the new USA elite handles fit this. I’m trying to order additional metal selector pins and colored rail coverings from them but they are getting back to me. Your video inspired me to restore these! Hope it comes out great

      When I called (again - 10 years ago), I spoke with the founders son (Matt I believe). He was very cool and excited to see the before and after pictures. Maybe with the Covid-19 stuff going on, they are not able to respond as quickly as they normally would.
      If you have access to a good sand blaster, that is what I would recommend. I was fortunate enough to have a friend sand blast the base for me (it was BAD) but I had to use a bench grinder and other means to clean up the weights. The hammered paint works great and is easy to touch up whenever it starts wearing.
      One piece of advice that Matt gave me (and it works excellent) is to periodically wipe the weights down with Armor All. This keeps the weights from binding and sticking together. Enjoy your project.

    @sdvid @amen360 I used the money I got from the 125lbs to pay for 120lbs ironmasters plus he gave me the curl and tricep bar. I still have powerblocks 90s which I'm selling and a pair of 50s I'm keeping. Send me your emails and I'll let you know how I'm able to get these deals on craigslist easily. Don't want to promote it on here cuz I don't want the competition lol.

    Hi Don't know if you still answer questions about this project, but I have one block with the plated that stick together because something happened and the space has somehow narrowed. Do you have advice about how to correct this?

      Two suggestions:1) When I restored the rusted plates, I called and spoke with the owners son (I believe his name is Matt). He recommended to clean and spray the plates down on a regular basis with Armor All or other similar protectant spray or wipes. This has worked great for mine. I live in Florida, and work out in my garage where it gets very humid and surface rust WILL develop, but I simply wipe them down with Armor All wipes and I'm good to go for several more months.2) Possibly the weights were slammed down or hit the ground at an angle causing the connecting rods between the plates to bend. In this case Armor All probably won't help much. Several people I've talked to don't like Power Blocks for this reason. A few of the plates on mine are also bent in and I have thought taking a big rubber mallet to try and straighten them out. Which, incidentally... is my second suggestion! :)

      I bought mine used too and I had the same problem as you. You have to look carefully one by one, how they’re fitting into the others sometimes when you pick up a desired weight it lifts some more plates for this problem check the bar lines from one on the bottom because they are narrowed and you will have to open them I used a little hidraulic jack. If the problem it’s right with the next one, you have to hit the wall plates to open or close to let the other plate pass free. Excuse my English.
