    The saddest part of watching these brilliant programs is that nothing has changed except that politicians are even more inept and the bureaucrats do not have Sir Humphrey’s skills. Nobody writes like this anymore.

    As a Civil Servant (then) I could see that the reseachers had done a great job. It was so true to life. I watch it now, after many years away from the Civil Service, and it is just as true today as it was then. It has been uncanny, watching the repeats in 2024, how episodes are broadcsat at a time which reflect actual activity in the country today. I believe the writers were often fed stories from WH insiders, some of which were so outlandish even they dared not write them into the script as virtually nobody would have believed them back then.
      Today of course, given what has transpired over the past forty odd years we’d be only too willing to believe it was all true, however totally fucking crazy the story line was. It’s not so much that the truth is stranger than fiction these days, it’s more that the truth has become indistinguishable from the fiction and quite bland by comparison.
      It gets to be like that when crazy conspiracy theories one after another keep turning out to be true.

    Actually Sir Humphrey telling the PM he lied was also laying upon the English language an error. To be a lie the speaker must know it was untrue. So while Hacker did not tell the truth, and indeed misled Parliament, he did not tell a lie as he thought it was the truth.

    • @MrSniperfox29
      @MrSniperfox29 Год назад

      But he lied by claiming he knew it wasn't true when he didn't actually know if it wasn't true, he even admits his logic was "why would we be doing it?". The funny thing is Hacker did indeed lie (and knew he lied) earlier when he asked his opponent to refer to a speech that didn't exist.

    • @brontewcat
      @brontewcat Год назад +3

      @@MrSniperfox29 He thought it was true, therefore it wasn’t a lie. Look up the definition of ‘lie’. To be a lie you have to know (or be reckless as to the truth), and often definitions include a malicious or bad motive for telling the untruth.
      Edit Most definitions require intent to deceive for an untruth to be a lie.

    • @MrSniperfox29
      @MrSniperfox29 Год назад

      @@brontewcat He lied when he made a statement claiming to know something he didn't actually know about.
      He even then lied to Humphrey when he said it was an honest answer because he then had to admit he didn't actually know they were doing it, so it wasn't honest it was just him speculating because he saw no reason to do it.
      Edit - The fun part of this all is, he claims he would never "knowingly mislead parliament" after doing exactly that multiple times in his previous statements (I have seen no evidence, haven't looked, they haven't told me about fiddling figures, because he never asked etc)

    Unfortunately, although the answer was indeed clear, simple, and straightforward, there is some difficulty in justifiably assigning to it the fourth of the epithets you applied to the statement, inasmuch as the precise correlation between the information you communicated and the facts, insofar as they can be determined and demonstrated, is such as to cause epistemological problems, of sufficient magnitude as to lay upon the logical and semantic resources of the English language a heavier burden than they can reasonably be expected to bear.

    3.15 😀😃😄Epistemology, the philosophical study of the nature, origin, and limits of human knowledge. The term is derived from the Greek epistēmē (“knowledge”) and logos (“reason”), and accordingly the field is sometimes referred to as the theory of knowledge. Epistemology has a long history within Western philosophy, beginning with the ancient Greeks and continuing to the present. Along with metaphysics, logic, and ethics, it is one of the four main branches of philosophy, and nearly every great philosopher has contributed to it.
