Adam Savage's Kill Bill Bride Sword Replica!
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 16 авг 2020
- Adam shows off his replica of The Bride's sword from Kill Bill, a collaboration with a propmaker that was a journey in prop replica sleuthing and unearthing little noticed details of the original Hattori Hanzo hero sword. This piece is the jewel on top of Adam's sword rack he made earlier this year, and holds up as one of the most accurate replicas he has in his collection!

Thanks for watching!

Thanks for all the kind words, Adam - it was a great project (I'm still building them today, every now and then), and it was great working with you on it. I think the kids are still star-struck from meeting up with you in Montreal!:)
You did a terrific job, Jason!
@@Neonator Thanks!
Fantastic job man! The attention to detail is amazing!
Hats off to you, sir. Your workmanship is exquisite.
@@TheLoveDoctor989 thanks!
RUclips: "Would you like to listen to Adam talk about a sword for nearly 13 minutes?"
Me: "I am ready to receive the knowledge."
I went into this kinda hoping it was going to be a build of one, but listened to a fantastic story anyways
(grabs a drink, crosses my legs, and sits down happily for 12 1/2 minutes)
I was like... Adam + Katana? HELL YEAH! *fast click*
More like 13 minutes? Awww man. I wanted it to be longer.
tzxazrael what did you do for the other second?
“Next up we have this beautiful piece from the Savage collection”
Forgotten weapons reference I hope
Next up we have a savage peace from this beautiful collection.
Is it wise to tell people to make swords when you’re not a registered sword maker yourself?
What are people going to do with their homemade metal sword?
Is it okay to say “some famous guy told me to do it?
Everyone who says they hear voices in the mental ward, gets electric shock treatment.
It would be *amazing* if Adam could lend some of his collection to a museum for a temporary exhibition. Between his actually screen-used stuff and some of the replicas like this, his Blade Runner guns, the ZF-1, etc., it would be a truly awesome experience to see them in person.
Adam: Hey! How about a commission?
Jason: Yeah, sure.
Adam: I bought you a CNC machine.
Jason: _Best commission ever._
That's much the way it went!:)
Jason Blakey He said you found a lot of the parts online. Is there a list of them somewhere?
@@JasonZakrajsek I think my build thread on the RPF listed every company i dealt with - but, of course, that was 8 years ago:)
@@sedace6734 Not sure I understand your question, but the parts are generally so expensive (in 2020, over 2K CAD), even I don't have one of these:)
"... I can tell you, with no ego, this is my finest sword. If, on your journey, should you encounter God, God will be cut."
I honestly respect these movies quite a bit.
Never will get why ppl see them as tacky and bad....
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽‼️
@@TheReal_ist Wait a minute.. tacky and bad? They're absolute masterpieces. The music and framing alone makes them worth rewatching atleast 30 times.
Oh my god, that's why the menuki is a vajra.
TheReal_ist Really? I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone describe these movies as tacky and bad. Maybe I should get out more
Kill Bill Trivia: At the beginning of the fight scene between O-Ren and The Bride, after O-Ren says, in Japanese, "I hope you saved your energy. If you haven't you may not last 5 minutes", it is exactly 4 minutes and 59 seconds from the time she steps forward and the music cues, until the fatal blow of the duel.
That's Q's handywork there. Gotta hand it to him. He can write/direct some good theater.
Awesome man thanks! I just tested and it is exactly 4:59 when the Bride delivers the fatal blow and O-Ren says.... that really is a Hatori Hanzo sword
@christracy99 the way Lucy Lui said "that really is a Hanzo katana" in Japanese made that scene complete 👌💯
I watched an interview she did with a lady and she explained that whole scene, great actress, amazingly beautiful as well I have to add.
The child-like enthusiasm and the gleam in Adam's eyes is just wonderful and contagious (no pun intended!) I love these videos! Thank you for your joy, it's awesome! 😄❤
The Man-at-Arms replica of this sword is exceptional. The details are pretty accurate for the movie sword but they actually made Tamahagane/bloom steel and then do a full traditional crafting process on it including engraving, which is a joy to watch. I assume Adam has already watched that video, but I still recommend it to anyone who hasn't.
Pronunciation guide for anyone who cares:
Iaido - Ee-Aye-Doh
It makes the video so much more interesting when the person doing the video has a passion for the things they are talking about. That's why I love this channel.
His energy and joy with talking about his props and the collaborations with other makers are infectious!!
For years off and on I've been trying to get a good look at the design on the saya and have never been able to completely make it out. Now finally I got to see it in close detail. Plus an explanation of it's meaning. Thank you Adam!
Iaido (ee-ai, btw), is the art of drawing and striking with the katana _in the same motion_. The act of drawing is itself a cut, the idea being that you can strike down an opponent as you draw, and be ready to face the next one.
Terminology;
Tsuba; the guard
Fuchi; the reinforcing band around the top of the grip
Kashira; pommel cap, covers and protect the end of the tsuka core.
Saya; scabbard
Habaki; blade collar, helps hold the Tsuba in place and keep the sword in the saya, traditionally copper, sometimes silver or brass.
Koiguchi; reinforcement around the mouth of the saya. Often just a ring of horn flush with the rest of the saya, not an external part.
Kojiri; decorative/protective tip piece for the saya. Not always present.
Seppa; spacers, typically brass or copper, used to adjust the tightness of the hilt in case of shrinkage.
Thank you for this info. I was mid way typing almost the exact same thing then I decided to see if anyone els had shared this and saw your comment :D
Thanks for detailing the parts. Where do you think is the best place to find accurate older swords and weapons from all over the world? I am doing a miniature project with clay and would really like to make real weapons.
That Iaido stuff, I was expecting something fast. Kinda disappointed with how slow it all was.
@@kbowler9266 I would recommend doing a search for the Wallace Gallery in London, UK.
@@ashleigh. common misconception.
It CAN be very fast, but the popular representations in media have led people to imaging IMPOSSIBLY fast, the old trope of having the katana resheathed before the target even realizes they've been cut.
oh man! I was just watching Kill Bill and have thought about how nice it would be to get a replica of that sword!
With that sword, one will actually have the power god and anime on his side.
Never in my life have I wanted one of your props this badly.
Hey Adam, I really love all the obsessive details of this! Could you do a lightsaber special, showing all your lightsabers? Pretty please please please pleeeeeeeeeeease!?!?!
Great idea. Stay tuned.

Hey there Adam I actually have a replica of the sword as well, not as perfect or high quality but I believe it has a lot of the stuff but instead of the skin handle it seems to be plastic, it has the marking on the handle, and it has ropes for the covering. It has a black rope on the sheath which may have the special symbol and it even has the carving on the blade. Now mine is very old and some parts are a bit faded in bad condition but it’s because it was in a pawn shop. Didn’t even know what it was till I saw a vid of yours referencing it a few years back. I can show it on twitter or something
Would be cool to have a tshirt with Adam's multiple different cosplay incognito costumes on it
The close up on that brass.. yikes.
You spent all this time and money to get it authentic and then you ruin it with your piece of brass.. lol.. so funny.
I saw the thumbnail and I thought Adam just got done playing Ghost to Tsushima.
As an iaido person doing it for about 15 years (znkr 4dan at the moment), and a person that also made two tsuka from scratch with honoki wood I can say it's not a terrible job you got there, but the tsukamaki could have been done a bit better. But a very nice iaito and lovely story!
Kill Bill is one of the few movies me and my wife both love and love movie props and this is the best of all of that. Great job.
oh heck yes! Now i need to go rewatch the movies!
Same I love so films
I love how excited Adam is showing us this piece! The smile was infectious.
I've never seen Kill Bill and I'm not particularly interested in swords, but seeing Adam geek out about it kind of makes my day.
that they bought everything is wild to me, being heavily involved with making Babydoll's sword for Suckerpunch. everything on that thing was custom made from scratch.
That would be a fantastic story...the making of baby doll's sword.
I'm looking it up right now, and... wow. "Engraved on the blade is a timeline of the movie" is one hell of a description to try to replicate. Good luck man!
@@daanwilmer yeah, it was this long intricate art piece...that didn't match the curve of the blade. I had to carefully bend it all to match. We then painted the whole blade black, laser etched the design in as a guide for the art, and handed it off to a master steel engraver I never even heard the name of. I did hear he appreciated the guide though.
I really love this channel. It’s just amazing!!
This is a beautiful story and connection between Adam and the maker.
Bloody hell I love all of your videos Adam, you are a gift to humanity and an icon for all geeks
Tested crew and/or Adam: Will there be any return of the live streams/Q&A any time, or are those retired? I very rarely was able to participate live, but I've enjoyed all of them anyway, and I miss the unfiltered stories from Adam.
We are discussing how and when to bring them back (and how often; we do know they can't be weekly anymore). Stay tuned.
Has this stuff reached Michael Jackson levels yet?
I’ve come so close to ordering a replica Bride sword so many times. The fact that NONE of them have the gold strips down the top and bottom of the saya/scabbard is an absolute deal breaker for me, and continues to be so. I just don’t know why this is omitted, it’s the first thing I noticed on screen and is such an integral part of the design. Pisses me off no end because I want one for my collection so badly. Loved this video, the attention to detail is exquisite.
That is so ridiculously cool! Only thing better than a screen-used prop is being able to build a replica using parts from the same vendors the propmaster used.
Mr. Savage you are such a great influence in my life, these videos are such a treat!
I imagine, this video, is one of the highlights of Jason‘s life. As a fellow maker, nothing makes me happier than to see the end-user so excited about some thing I’ve made. I bet just as you are today, Jason will be talking about this collaboration for years. What a beautiful piece you both worked together to create
I’ve been thinking about making my own replica of this sword but mainly for practice, the one I really want to make and have in my collection is Budd’s sword! All the close ups of this will definitely help! Blows my mind how Adam has the same type of appreciation for these beautiful pieces!
I absolutely love the emotion in the last 20 seconds. I mean it’s clear through the entirety of the video how Adam cares for this sword and other works. But it’s in that last 20 secs where we see a sliver of all the emotion swimming under the surface
Lovely piece; as a former student and teacher of MJER Iaido, (18 years, now retired from training) I can see your passion for the sword is heartfelt. Ken shin ichi nyo - the sword and the spirit are one. Wishing you all the best now and in the future.
I appreciate your time in detailing the sword.
Love to hear people's nerd-gasms over properly and skillfully made things. A pleasure to watch.... and beautiful work
The story behind it all makes it special on so many levels.
What a wonderful story for such a wonderful item, thanks for sharing!
Such a beautiful build! Besides the tang on the hilt it's absolutely spot on! One of my favorite builds from Mr. Savage! 🔥👍
Now, I need to watch Kill Bill again. One of my favorite movies!
Same here, saw this video in my subscriptions and decided the next 2 movies i watch are going to be the kill bill's, great movies.
Dude! I never comment on youtube videos but this is amazing stuff. Just riffing on a sword you built with a creator is amazing. Love this creativity machine you've built!
This is every fan's dream, glad to see you're living it Adam!
This has to be in my top 3 favorite channels on RUclips! Learn alot of cool stuff from Adam.
I love that somewhere the prop-master for the film who charged a fortune for hand crafted swords just grabbed "handle 32, blade 6, scabbard 11" from a catalogue.
Man that thing is sick dude. Amazing work by your friend
I'm close to tears, Kill Bill is such an important movie in my life, it changed me. This sword is an abolute thing of beauty, I hope Adam treasures it and from this video I can tell he does.
It's amazing and so are you Adam. Thanks for sharing your stories with us.
Sometimes the journey of making the prop, costume, piece is the value. The story of the collab makes my heart feel good.
I’ve had a replica of this sword around 15 years ... love it
Outstanding video Adam Savage
Very cool. I have an iaito sword that an old boyfriend gave me back in the late ‘70’s and it’s so cool. I used it when cosplaying some anime characters. Thanks for sharing this Adam. Your obsession with accuracy is awesome!
I really like the amount of acknowledgement he gave to Jason 🤟🤟🤟
I can only imagine how great it is when adam commissions a maker to make him something.
Mr. Savage! You’ve shared so many of your treasured objects! Will you please share your hat collection with us? Don’t you have quite a few? Any unique storage?
Yeah those swords are often used in martial arts ceremonies and drawing practice, that's a gorgeous sword you it's did fantastic
Thanks for this geek out session. And yes, that is a really nice looking replica.
I just love Your enthusiasm! It is contagious! In a god way!
Adam are the geek we all aspire to be!
Love the detail of this piece. I own two prop swords from The Last Samurai that were used in the final battle scene. The attention to detail is amazing for props.
This sword was also featured in Adam's Home Office Tour (with Norm) years ago..
What an amazing piece of art! Thanks for sharing,
Very Cool Kill Bill Bride Sword replica !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice! Beautiful piece.
Great story, so much details on this replica, amazing :)
One of Adam's favorite pieces in his collection
Lol, Adam is very giddy over this. Love it.
A beautiful piece and so well researched! What a great project....love researching things like this
I just watched the Kill Bill movies for the first time this week!
I would really really hope that one day Adam decides to build some form of Museum for his collection of stuff!!! I would pay good money to see it all!
I love it. I wish someone would mass produce exact replicas, but made with real high quality steel. I’m sure there’s enough people out there, myself included, that would like to buy one.
This my all time favourite prop replica I have ever seen! Congrats....just need a selfie with Sonny Chiba
Great video Adam, I love your enthusiasm!
I remember that thread..
Inspired me to do my own build. Mine isn't quite as accurate as I had to work on a budget but my parts are as close as I could get with the money I was working with.
Here we are 6 months later and about to replace all of the inaccurate parts except for the kojiri which is the same piece that Adam has "wrong" too.
I feel like I'm in good company.
Man what are the odds, I introduced Kill Bill vol.1 to my mum last night, the same day this video was released.
Cool stuff :)
Beautiful, Adam! The sword looks fantastic! 😃
Stay safe there, everybody! 🖖😊
Thats a great interesting story, makes you think about the journey to acquire knowledge is often more rewarding than the knowledge itself.
Hattori Hanzō would be honored!
A small thing that many might not notice - but as someone who has chickens - I spotted the chicken in the first blade photo from Jason (2:27) 😃
You are correct, sir:) About 2 years after that, I discovered that chickens are a lot of work, and gave it up:)
@@jblakey they are indeed a lot of work, but we like the eggs. We have 27 chickens at this time. Great work on the sword, it looks amazing.
I love his passion for his own Katana ^^
Hattori Hanzo would be proud!
Cool! Last year I bought an authentic (antique) Japanese katana from the Early Edo Period; costing just over $9000 (shipped from Japan). These swords are a work of art. They're absolutely beautiful!
check out the Man At Arms video of the Kill Bill sword...those guys are amazing.
This is like for me what prop making is about, finding the jigsaw components and then having the skill to put it together. Blade assembly really isn't too hard as long as things fit relatively well but what an awesome piece I want one so bad but UK laws make it very hard
for samurai swords uk law makes collecting authentic swords easy. broken down its this....a samurai or ninja sword is restricted if it has a straight blade to either fake non cutting or made by traditional forging. a samurai sword with a traditional curved blade is restricted to a blade length of 28 inches unless it has been forged by traditional japanese methods in which case there are no restrictions. all blades are 18yrs age limit and brandishing or open carry in public is illegal. if you are 18 and want aninja sword or samurai trio set is non cutting too brittle to use stainless steel there is no restriction, if you want any cutting sharp sword, those in softish 1045, usable 1060, live 1095 , damascus,or folded steel with sharp edges , they are all made in various traditional japanese methods( even those from china forges) and are not restricted except blade must be certified andover 4 inch blade and under 56inches blade tip to start of handle , again public open carry is illegal.
That is an amazing replica!
I love how over the top nuts he is regarding the little details of the sword xD
That's best replica, I have seen of the katana
Adam, I know you won't read this but out of anyone I've ever seen growing up (I'm 39 now), you're the only one that I want to meet before I die and shake hands with. I'm a maker at heart myself and use your outlook on life as my guiding light. Anyway, cheers. Bye.
Cute... Tune in to Tested to see Adam's sword baby lol.
So glad you made this video! I’ve been so curious about where the sword props for Kill Bill came from. They stood out to me because they had a lot of specific detail and attentively payed to them that isn’t usually given in Hollywood movies with katanas, but I couldn’t find any info about if any of the props still existed or where they came from. Cool to hear that an iaido company produced them. (It’s pronounced ee ai doh by the way, like sea, cry, dough)
man., what a beutifull sword! the work that into it is insane man, thanks for showing it off :D
You’re enthusiasm is extremely infectious, I couldn’t give less of a fuck about swords but this video was fascinating
Love this! Can you do one on the Highlander H1 sword?
With love from Russia. I used to watch Mythbusters since I was 10. Now I watch Tested, and god gamn, that's fantastic
Nice! I have a WW2 japanese officers katana that my great grandfather brought back from the pacific. We had it analyzed and the blade happened to be 450 years old. Signed by Ietsugu around 1550.
Great background story to this replica.
I read about this one, I really really wanted an accurate replica, but I couldn’t find an even remotely simple way to get one. I’m totally cool with you having one instead.
I wanted this video to happen so bad. Ever since the tour of Adams office video!
Would have been cool to see a video on it being built. But great video
Just been getting into katanas myself lately and if you can find the correct kojiri (scabbard endcap), you can have a saya (scabbard) made that actually fits the kojiri, and that blade & habaki (blade spacer?). The sword should be retained in the saya by a slight interference fit with the habaki to prevent it from falling out during vigorous movement.
This channel has some inherent danger for me. Everytime Adam has show and tell or a tooltip, i want to go out spending money like there's no tomorrow 😀
Lets be honest: there is hardly going to be a tomorrow anyway. In any case, having a sword might be usefull for the future
This is far too true for me as well.
I was hoping there was a link for the DIY CNC machine...
i want to go out *building like there's no tomorrow
A man and his sword, big love.
