I'm Canadian and my Aunt's sister spent some time working at the Vimy Ridge memorial and she told me that there's a monument there for the Moroccan troops who took Vimy Ridge but only for a few hours before the Germans pushed them back.
The one picture is interesting because it looks like it happened after Normandy. The African troops are wearing American helmets, using a British Bren gun, and a German rifle (the French often issued captured German weapons to their arsenal). It shows the mixed up nature of the French military just after liberation.

This number rose to 1636 after mobilization but I was not able to find the total number of colonial troops after mobilization in 1914. But in total 600 000 served as soldiers during the war. I don't know how many french soldiers served, but I think 600 000 is within 5-10%

I don't know how many french soldiers served, but I think 600 000 is within 5-10%
