I actually find it curious that she very broadly generalized that response, considering that she discussed it in an interview and said it was really about encouraging her friend to come out of the closet, so the line "for people to just be who they are" refers to shedding the facade of being straight, not just lame encouragement for general wellbeing and self-accpetance.
Wow. I know it's an old post, but sometimes stupidity transcends time. Sometimes, gay people need to pretend to be straight instead of being who they are because of fear of retribution. Sometimes, men need to pretend to have that whole machismo thing instead of being who they are because of peer pressure. There are a lot of reason why people are not who they are. Just because you don't get it doesn't mean it's lame or mindless.
