I felt that Sandler having the money to pay off the debt and still repeatedly placing bets actually made the movie better. If Uncut Gems was about a guy who fucked up in the beginning and then spent the rest of the movie racing against the clock to try to recoup the money (a la Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels), it would still work, but there is something uniquely anxiety inducing about watching a man compulsively dig himself deeper and deeper into a hole in the hopes of making one more big score. It gives more agency to Sandler’s character and really captures the feeling of a man whose gambling addiction prevents him from doing the thing that you, as an audience member, are screaming for him to do. But I’m gay so what do I know.
Nick didn't like the movie because he is Sandler's character. He figuratively won the lottery with this podcast and still wants to gamble it away on Crypto.

nick must be losing touch. the rock wasn't actually magic, it was that Sandlers character concocted this whole gambling scheme based on the players belief in it. not that it was actually magical. it was that the player thought it was magical and would ease the players superstition to play well (even though he could obviously play well as it probably is)
This is from when the movie came out, and if you ask me he’s dead on, awesome directing with just a less than good plot. Great anxiety building but that’s all there was to it.
People's perception of the rock being magic was more important than the rock being anything at all. That's how superstition works, it's not what it is, it's what you think it is.
@@Jim900 no he's not dead on it doesnt even seem like he gets the movie, he's just pointing shit out that doesn't matter and saying they're plot holes when that's the whole fucking point of the movie. Throughout my years in New York I had an evolving relationship with the diamond district. As a bike messenger I intermittently had pickups and deliveries in the many secure building down that block picking up uninsured envelopes of raw and/or loose gems. They wouldn't pay for the insurance to cover the value if something happened to the stones because they don't have real value. They know it. I also bought a gem scale so I could weigh mdma when I thought I was a drug kingpin for 6 months.

Because of that “magical element” he started feeling invincible and lost grasp of reality and the situation at hand. Locking the mobsters up was dumb to anybody else but because he was feeling himself, and was so fixated on the idea that KG was about to fix his life for him. Then reality set in even after the W.
“It’s like there’s one part of the movie where you can take a breath and relax. That’s probably what a gamblers life is like” Stav nailing the Tone of the Film pacing there.
Honestly, the reason it's even more anxiety inducing when you watch it (unless you are also a compulsive gambler) is that you are constantly watching in disbelief that Sandler's character HAS the money and options to get out from under his debt, but refuses to just get out of trouble and be stuck like a 100 grand. He keeps layering massive risk on top of risk even when he's driving by a potential off ramp. If he didn't have the money or family to borrow it from his character would be more understandable and heroic, he'd be an underdog just trying to survive. He's so much more unlikeable because he refuses to stop gambling no matter how many chances he is given or how much privilege he otherwise has in life. Any normal dude watching has to be screaming "JUST USE THE ROCK TO PAY OFF THE DEBTS AND GO BACK TO FUCKING JULIA FOX IN YOUR CONDO, YOU DUMB LUCKY FUCK."
@@Irraptured jesus that movie..... i watched it a few weeks back after seeing your comment, loved it... while being frightened as well... thanks for the recommendation
I feel the same about Uncut Gems as I do about Parasite. Both are experience films with a capital E. The first time you watch both, if you fuck with them, you REALLY fuck with them, and it's such a wild ride. But the thing about these thrill-ride kind of movies is that, imo, they have diminishing returns; every subsequent watch you're just chasing that first high. I think they're both still worth rewatching if only to appreciate the screenplays for both and figuring out how they both accomplished what they did. Oh and I'm in agreement with Stav, Good Time is the better (and much more rewatchable) Safdie Bros film. Can't wait for whatever those boys do next tho.
I'm pretty sure they are doing a 48hrs remake next. Edit.. Nevermind that's what they were doing, it has since been scrapped which is good because they are so good at coming up with their own stories.
I think good time helps you appreciate uncut gems more, because you can see the evolution of the visual style, and cross-film motifs (blacklights, quasi-magical elements for some examples), and I think Good times has even more of what Nick was complaining about, but the tension is more constant, so I think plot wise it's weaker, but tone wise some people might prefer it or be more impacted by it than Uncut Gems. It also depends on what you think about the twist in UG (if it even qualifies as one)
If I offer Nick a role in my existential arthouse drama that begins filming this winter, are most of you going to flood the trailer comment section with various lines about being gay? If so, I don’t know if it’s worth it.
@@juggmkj I only know it because I've always loved reading and writing. It means flighty, unreliable. It comes from the Roman God Mercury (also known as Hermes), the messenger of the gods who delivered their missives upon his winged sandals. He was characterized as erratic, energetic, and emotionally unstable.
The rock was not necessarily magic. Garnett fetishized it and maybe was simply inspired by it. And Adam Sandler understood that and made a clever bet. Magic realm scenes we go to in the rock sometimes can be simply interpreted as symbolism.
I like the magic element for its cinematography and how it’s derived from compounded historical exploitation. He doesn’t always have the money though, the whole fake watches sub plot is about that.
"There's no point where he is unable to pay off the debt." That's true, but only because it's the point of Howard's character. He doesn't WANT to just pay off the debt and blow $100,000 without gaining anything. That's why he puts it off for as long as he does, he wants to use that money to hit it bigger. He's an obsessive gambling addict who always wants to save up as much as possible in order to hit a score as big as possible. His explicit goal is to make as much money as possible, and the debt to the mob is just an obstacle in the way of him achieving that goal. Personally I think that makes the story more anxiety-inducing and interesting. Even if you do happen to hit it big, there's no guarantee that things will work out, because life itself is a game of chance and you should respect that fact and be careful. Especially if you owe mobsters money and don't factor in how crazy they are.
I think nick’s really wrong about this movie. A big part of the otherwordly aspect of this movie to me is just the world Arnold lives in. He’s always living slightly outside of reality which pisses everyone around him off. I really loved it.
The way Nick talks about this movie reminds me of the way I would talk about a movie when I didn’t like the feeling it gave me. Not to say that that’s what it is, I think Nick’s okay with feeling sick or anxious from this. It’s the way he points out plot holes that don’t really matter/points out things that come from a direct misunderstanding of a film, it feels more like an excuse to not ‘fully commit to the world of the film’ than an actual criticism. Like if some overly disturbing film got to me I’d act like that; “oh, but someone definitely would’ve helped her out if they saw that” “it’s stupid because he definitely would’ve thought through a way to get free by then” “they would’ve caught him by now” like that may be true but it doesn’t fucking matter, the whole point is to let that stuff happen. All this to say I don’t think Nick realizes he’s doing that, but then again I’m a gay man so what do I know…
the bball game was chance but the gem , the loans and the game all together was hedged. Best case scenario he hits the bet and flips the gem, worst case scenario he loses the bet, flips the gem and pays the loan , makes a little profit
The two guys that they are talking about with the championship ring actually do work there and so does the guy that works in Howards shop that goes off on his own the Safdie's like to use real non actors in their movies and that's what I like about them it gives the character more believability.
For a couple of rich Jewish kids from NYC, the Safdie Brothers really do a phenomenal job of capturing the gritty, smelly, glamourless elements of the 5 Burroughs.
I did enjoy this movie quite significantly. This and Punch Drunk Love. EDIT: Good Time was also amazing, I am shocked I missed that movie when it first came out.
The most unlikable character in the movie is the black dude who keeps playing Sandler and not having the chain or whatever on him. That is the most anxiety inducing element of the movie.
I never saw the rock as magical intervention, it came across to me like a symbol of the beliefs gamblers hold in supernatural things. Themes of this run all the way through the movie. It doesn’t have any connection, it just feels like it does. Leaves me wondering what the power of that feeling is
The supernatural aspect only exists for Kevin. The magic does not exist from the point of the movie viewer obviously and it was never implied any time in the movie that the rock was responsible for why Adam's bet's were hitting.
I felt that Sandler having the money to pay off the debt and still repeatedly placing bets actually made the movie better.
One of Nick's worst moments.
When does he not have shit movie takes?
Nick is unbearable to listen.

I think nick’s really wrong about this movie. A big part of the otherwordly aspect of this movie to me is just the world Arnold lives in. He’s always living slightly outside of reality which pisses everyone around him off. I really loved it.
how does nick remembers all the lines from movies?? its seriously impressive
I got 'Jeopardy' at 5:00. I watch 'Jeopardy' at 5:00.
Nick: That guy is me.
20 seconds later: He's gay. He's a gay man.
great film, great pod, great video.
"Those guys are so funny-looking, im glad im not them" - Stav
Julia Fox in UC is fenomenal and gorgeous
and she's gotta fade aceee
@@sincere9142 after a couple of google searches, I can concurr that she indeed, has an fadde aceee
Another superb dissection, gentlemen. Big ups.
"He's a gambler that luck gets... gets his fingers on a fuckin' magical rock. And that's a pretty cool story if you ask me"
I like how Nick identifies with fat gay Michael Douglas in this movie.
….but You did say I could have a juice
All this to say I don’t think Nick realizes he’s doing that, but then again I’m a gay man so what do I know…
yea you're right
I watched it for the first time last night. I like how it doesn't give you a moment to breath.
It's hard to get panic attacks when you're literally prescribed medication to prevent panic attacks.
I want all movie reviews done by the boys
Couldn’t get past the fact that Adam Sandler didn’t do the “Conditioner is bett-ah” voice.
Nick referring to those two random dudes as Michael Cera killed me. I never noticed it but they are dead-on Jewish late 50’s versions of him.
This is the best movie review I've ever heard.
It took me a second but you actually edited these clips to follow the dialogue, well played my freaky enron
I'm gay by the way
Guys I'm on edibles and I'm starting to feel... Respect towards Stav and I think he's making some good points. What the fuck is going on?!!!!!
"This is me, I'm gay" -adam sandler
the bball game was chance but the gem , the loans and the game all together was hedged.
Nicks ability to remember lines from movies that he’s probably only watched once is incredible
Original.
Thank you Clangers!!
Nick's observations always kill me, the Michael Cera looking people is so spot on hahahaha
“That ecosystem” is a great inference to some kind of semi aquatic terrarium full of amphibians.
The twins looks like Jeff Ross😭
Really bummed me out to see the Sandman and Bogosian get killed at the end.
Stav doing spoiler alert when he's only watched maybe 10 movies in his entire life was always so funny to me
Wow. Pretty long clip. Can’t wait until it’s over so I can listen to Sam Morril’s standup for the 80th time.
Stav says he's happy he doesn't look like those bald michael ceras when he sort of looks like them now
Adam Sandler can act.
This is 1 of only 2 movies where he's actually done it however.
No, he was also good in Reign Over Me and The Meyerowitz Stories
For a couple of rich Jewish kids from NYC, the Safdie Brothers really do a phenomenal job of capturing the gritty, smelly, glamourless elements of the 5 Burroughs.
I loved Adam in this!
Leaves me wondering what the power of that feeling is
This is literally the best fucking movie review I’ve ever seen in my life.
Heard.
How tf do they remember so many details about movies they watch.
They’re human beings?
This is from straight after the movie came out
6:00 nick accurately predicts amazing cultivation simulator
I was anxious during the entire movie but not nearly as much as like some black mirror episodes
Should watch Ben Wheatley's 'kill list' that movie gave me a heart attack
Hell yeah dude
Fear and loathing in Las Vegas is the most anxiety inducing movie, or natural born killers
I agree
The supernatural aspect only exists for Kevin. The magic does not exist from the point of the movie viewer obviously and it was never implied any time in the movie that the rock was responsible for why Adam's bet's were hitting.
