I’m 40 years old and I’ve always loved music, but for the past few years nothing is really grabbed me. Then, I heard House in Nebraska and I was completely blown away. Her voice is beautiful but still has all these rough edges. Her lyrics pull you in. I’ve always loved what I call “slice of life songs”, and she is an absolute master at it. You feel like you’ve lived a year of her life listening to her music
If it’s worth anything, as much as Ethel is a talented singer, lyricist, and instrumentalist, she is also very much a talented music producer. She’s responsible for the production on nearly all her studio work, which is something that can’t be said about many artists. While this is an amazing performance, it only scratches the surface of her talent. If you enjoyed her live performance, you’ll be amazed by listening to her album Preacher’s Daughter.
sun bleached flies always makes me teary eyed. what incredible lyrics. like you’ve said, her songwriting makes her a standout artist.. those little details make for such good storytelling. thanks for finishing the rest of her kexp performance! 🧡
I've listened to most of the album. I really like her...though there is too much reverb on her vocals. I would prefer a drier production. Otherwise a great album.
Hayden (Ethel Cain) has said she is really influenced by people like Imogen Heap and the band Daughter, as well as Switchfoot and Grouper. I was so happy to hear this, because I love Daughter and Imogen Heap, and it made sense because I can't stop listening to Ethel Cain. She said she's influenced by a wide variety of artists.
I was trying to think of Grouper the other day. I couldn't pull her name from my brain. Nice of you to supply! Thanks so much for your comment and being on the channel.
Honestly i really hope when i get to to your age i'm still as open minded to new artist as you are, it's inspiring to see you apreciate the work of a different generation :)
I'd be interested in your reaction to one of my favorites from Ethel Cain's Preacher's Daughter, that is, Ptolomea, it's a bit darker in tone but I've yet to find another song with an energy quite like it! I'm new to the channel, but looking through everything, it all seems really cool so far! The insights on the music are quite unique, reminds me of conversations I have with my own dad tbh lol
Was looking forward to this video! Her album, Preacher's Daughter, is one of my favorite releases of the year. I enjoy the variety of music you react to. And as a Seattle resident, I especially enjoy your KEXP reactions!
Wow. I'm so happy another generation is appreciating her work. I've heard others says Lana del Rey who I also love walked so Ethel Caine could run in this era, however she has her own unique something she has come into... I absolutely admire Ethel Caine! Can't wait to see what else she does too, your analysis reminds me of a college professor btw - english analysis classes were always my favorite :)

I had to hold it together at one point when she was doing the wordless vocal. Such pure feeling. Nice to hear from you.
I implore you to listen to the album in full, perhaps even in your free time. The story is much more powerful (not to mention devastating) in context…

She's also influenced by Florence and the Machine - I can hear that in her voice too.
@@MYOB00 I loved her duet with Florence Welch, singing 'Morning Elvis.'

Keep living and keep listening. My only advice.
