I Drove this 20 Year Old Lexus 10,000 Miles... And It May Be The BEST. (Lexus LS430 Review)

  • Published on Mar 16, 2026
  • Today I'm reviewing my own 2004 Lexus LS430, which I have put 10,000 miles on it in under 9 months of ownership. It is a large, spacious and luxurious sedan with a NA 4.3 Lexus V8, which means it will go the distance... But has time been nice to this old Beauty? Also, is the new LS 500 worth 10x the cost or is this really the best value, on any car, today. Full Stop.
    As always, hope you enjoy.

Great vlog, there's no comparison out there a $10k used car, once you own a Lexus especially YOU have the LS series there is no comparison and turning back to other brands of vehicles! How I know...because I owned a 2005 ML with 18" wheels, I enjoy it every time I take it out on the weekend (California gas prices are much higher than other states). You should be glad you don't have the Ultra it's a hard to find and will be more $$$ to maintain it. Congrats on the purchase!

That is one of the best vehicle you will ever own. I have an 04 LS430, 06 LX470 and an 08 SC430. They do not make them like this anymore. I have driven many newer vehicles and they don’t compare. New vehicles will be recycled into soup cans in 20 yrs and my Lexus vehicles will still be on the road. These are peak years for Lexus manufacturing. Ride like a limo and built like a tank. They are the best.

@Rct9369 that’s great! Predictable maintenance, not too expensive when things need repair, reasonable insurance costs, and respectable fuel efficiency. Plus, these assets are actually appreciating! Finally, the analog experience without haptic glass and Mark Levinson sound - - just my style.

I've learned with any car specifically. You have to look at it all in a vacuum. This one luckily is not trying to be something it's not, a sports car. It's a stupid reliable, luxurious, cruiser. And it does that in spades!

I owned a 2005 UL with a pristine service history and 48,000 miles in 2013. I flew from Texas to Kansas to buy it sight unseen! Usual maintenance and a repair to the adaptive cruise control. The tech at Lexus said if the previous owner ever turned it on, it would have been fixed under warranty. Known problem. It is expensive to fix these, but you do so rarely. No big deal. At 180,000 I was t-boned by a pickup that was doing in excess of 60 mph. Car was totaled, but the extensive air bags deployed and I walked away with a bruised hip. This may be the safest vehicle ever built, not to mention the best. I may own my life to this vehicle.

    • @Rosa-x6i7v
      @Rosa-x6i7v Month ago +2

I currently own a 2005 UL with around 144K miles which I bought sight unseen from a dealer in California. The only reason I bought it was to see if the UL was that much better than the ML. I had a 2004 ML at the time, which I have since sold, but I will have to say I enjoyed the 2004 much better. I have been dealing with the air shocks on this one, and I will say that they are more trouble , and expense, than they're worth. I replaced the two front shocks, but it's not any better ride than the 2004 was. And I still can't use the ride height adjustment. It still drives beautifully, but is not worth all the extra expense I've spent so far. I would be in the market to sell it, but would have ask around $25,000 just to break even.

I own a 2004 Toyota Avalon. Purchased, brand new. 22 years later, it runs like it did on the first day, brand new. The paint job, upholstery are new because this has been an outdoor car for 22 years. There are two minor problems that would cost too much to repair. The back left window can be lowered from the driver's control, but not raised. You simply have to get out of the car, go to the rear window and raise it by the control on the door. Just roll down some other window. The fan control may not always work when you change the speed of the blast of air. Just put it on a low setting and don't keep changing.

The 400s and 430s both are incredible. And to your point, still a good price. The early 460s, while still great, are a bit more complicated and have issues with quality on the dash and other soft points that can be expensive. The early models are a great blend of sophisticated and simple. 👍

When my LS400 was totaled in a hit and run. 🤨 I went shopping for an LS430. Bought in 2017 for 7 grand. My 2002 ML is the best car ive ever driven or owned. I drove transit for many years and wanted ultra comfort & affordable luxury. My 2002 fit the bill. Currently has 150,000 miles and drives like a dream Hard to believe this car is 24 years old, its that well made. I ❤️ my LS430!!

The LS430 is Lexus at its pinnacle and I don’t think it has ever produced a better car since. Or really anything close. It’s crazy to think they just announced the LS will not continue. It’s also crazy this car seems to just now be getting its acclaim. I think it’s mostly due to the SUV being the main choice of consumers and rendering sedans a thing of the past for many. We really didn’t know how good we had it when this car initially came out. Great content, liked and Subd.

I have owned my 2005 LS430 for about 4 years and put 40K miles on it. The interior still looks brand new, absolutely no wind noise at 80+ mph, the switchgear is still tight, the engine is silent and smooth and the transmission shifts are imperceptible. It is an absolutely amazing car. Oh, it gets 27 mpg at 85 with the cruise on. I paid $9500 for it 4 years ago with 150K on it. I have owned a bunch of cars including a Jaguar S Type R. This is the finest car I have ever owned or driven for that matter.

I love my 06 LS 430. I have owned nearly 40 cars, including an LS 400, SC 400, and I currently also have an LX 470. For a total of just over 30k, i have two of the best cars ever. They take me on multi thousand mile road trips, around town, out in the desert, to the mountains in the snow, in 100+ degree temps and below 30 degree temps. Comfortably and reliably. It's amazing frankly. It has turned me from a car flipper into a car preserver. I religiously maintain them and have even had the bumpers repainted. Wish more things were like this; something worth keeping and maintaining instead of more junk for the landfill.

It is the finest automobile I've ever owned, I got it at 313k and it's been an absolute gem, I've had a couple of repairs like O2 sensors and some suspension but that's about it outside of maintenance (timing belt, water pump, fuel pump etc). Getting 8.5L per 100km and being able to do 750km or a bit more to a tank if all highway is insane haha
I am literally never selling it and will be buried in it lol

Replace the timing belt when I bought it despite it having only 27,000 miles on it, because it was 15 years old. New Continental tires ( from Germany) and the rest has been smooth sailing. 27 miles per gallon on the highway and 16 around town. I would not sell mine for $30,000. I am six feet four inches tall and I fit in every seat in the car comfortably and all the gadgets still work, including the oscillating fan.

I've owned mine (05) for over a year now.... Silver like yours with black leather... not a real common variety surprisingly... I have the factory upgraded rims. Which gives it an awesome appearance. I got mine with 155 K and wasn't sure where the timing belt was so last winter I went to town on it!! New water pump, pulleys, and timing belt. Redid oil pan gasket and valve covers. New radiator and all new coolant lines... All new vacuum lines... replaced brakes and rotors. Also replaced all fluids - brake, transmission, rearend, coolant, and power steering. I have no experience with steering components, so I had a shop look it over and recommend I replace a tie rod, so I bought all 4 and also rear upper swing arm bushing mounts, and also all new KYB shocks... This pro off road shop replaced everything and did an alignment. Really good job... the tech also has an older Lexus GS model. First time I felt 100% comfortable handing my car over to someone else.... Replace tires a couple months ago and Battery couple days ago... I plan on driving this for the next 20 years...
I absolutely love this car... absolutely a pleasure to drive and people who know know.... had some cool conversations. One memorable was this rich kid at a gas station in a new BMW 750 and he was crushing on my car... lol. I started it up to leave and he just like looked over and smiled, even though he had a twin turbo V8 in his car.
I currently have 170k on it and when the weather isn't bad and I'm driving my first Gen Tundra... I'm using this and it just purrs down the interstate. 40 mile commute for my work. My last car was an ES350 and that was an amazing car but it felt slightly cramped for me, might of been a touch sportier, but it didn't hold a candle to the LS430...

Great video. When my parents passed away I bought their 2006 LS 430 and it is the best car ever made. I’ve owned it now a decade and it has close to 300,000 miles and outside of maintenance and a couple repairs such as front end components, complete suspension replacement, alternator, starter, and unfortunately the radiator cause I got a rock through it, everything else has been perfect. It all comes down to was the maintenance done regularly and if so these cars are probably 1,000,000 mile vehicle vehicles.
The only downside is the expensive timing belt and all the parts that go with that which I just did for the third time in the vehicle’s life, and that ran me just over $2600. But that’s what you have to do if you want one of these vehicles.
Also I did replace the dash computer with a modern aftermarket that allows my iPhone to connect to it and it’s a little bigger screen highly recommend. It fits into the dash perfectly makes it look like it’s supposed to be there.

One more thing about body roll and ride- this is something that I feel has been lost. Every car doesn’t need to handle like a BMW 3 series. Luxury does not equal handling or excessive technology. It should be about the ride quality, the reliability, the quiet.

I was just talking to a friend about this today! Recently had a 2020 BMW X7 for my work and it was stiff enough to almost be "sporty" but also to be unsettling at speed over bumps. It's a strange middle ground where it loses comfort and sportiness. This wasn't even an M model...

Just bought a 90K mile 06 Custom Lux. Paid 15,800. It has only been driven 3K miles in the last 7 years. I had to put tires on it because they were 10 years old but looked brand new. Replaced left front strut with OEM. Had the timing belt/water pump done which I negotiated the dealer to pay for. I’m having a car audio place install Apple CarPlay with original screen soon. It’s an absolute pleasure to drive.

Finding a decent example is getting harder, took me a year to find mine with 42k for 16k.... in 2019 these were all over the place for 10k. Get yourself a Grom updated av. its the single best purchase I made for the car, immediately makes it competitive with late model cars in the tech dept.

I actually traded that 460 in for a brand new 2025 toyota camry just for the newer tech/features...its nice having that, but then still taking out my 430 every few days for the "luxury" ride.

I have always bought the highest quality car I can afford at the time, and as importantly, the best model year where the company was still trying hard to break into the market. Once they get "successful", they get sloppy or the bean counters start nibbling away the intrinsic quality. I have owned three LS400s, done my own work on the timing belts and idlers and valve adjustments, and have never had a breakdown in the total accrued 200,000 miles.
I am currently driving a 1991 LS400 with the original non-interference 1UZFE engine with those 9,500 rpm connecting rods.
The car is smooth, quiet, nothing has yet broken (door locks are getting lazy in deep cold), and most important, no stupid bells and whistles. Steering wheel has no buttons! Everything is low-key simple quality, the wood is understated unlike the 430's garish application of wood accents all over the place, and I can work on everything with simple hand tools and do my OBD I diagnostics with just a jumper wire.

These types of features that still work on a Lexus 20 years later would be broken on European cars within before the 4 yr/ 50k mile warranty is over. And of course, UZ series engines are fantastic.

Re; LEXUS: I worked, indirectly, for Southeast Toyota Distribution, in FL. The owner was a self-made billionaire named Jim Moran. He had a Midas touch: 1 out of every 5 Toyotas sold in the US are sold in his distribution region. He invented the concept of the "Toyotathon", owned 20 auto-related companies, and knew the Toyoda (NOT "Toyota") family personally. Toyota would not make a major move in the US without consulting Mr. Moran. Around 1983-84, Toyota came to him for advice. They wanted to create a separate luxury brand to compete with Cadillac. Mr. Moran's advice? 'Buy a Mercedes LS sedan, take it apart, and reverse-engineer it. Then build a car which LOOKS like a Mercedes, with Toyota QUALITY, Cadillac PRICING, and with a luxury dealer network, SEPARATE from Toyota. You'll beat Cadillac at their own game'. And THAT is how the original 1989 LS400 came about. And that's why Lexus ALWAYS had its own dealer network, unlike say Hyundai-Genesis. I know this because I heard the story right from Mr. Moran. When he was alive, he owned the #1 Lexus dealer in the world, JM LEXUS, in Margate Florida. It was common for them to retail OVER 1,000 NEW Lexus' per month. (I'm retired, I don't know what they do today) JM Lexus was the 1st and maybe only Lexus dealer NOT named for its location; i.e. "Lexus of (City Name Here). Because Jim Moran wanted it that way! And because he was Jim Moran! Oh, and I've had 5 Lexus vehicles, every one of them a jewel of a car.
