  • The Bilsington Cosway Monument was erected in 1835 in memory of local landowner and philanthropist Sir William Richard Cosway, who was killed in a coaching accident nearby.
    Constructed from local Kent rag stone, the Obelisk is over 15.85 Meters high (52 Feet) and can been see for many miles.
    The Monument was repaired in 1893, and again in 1948. It was struck by lightning in 1967 causing major damage. It was fully renovated 1999 costing around £94'000.
    Richard Cosway helped establish a school and supported reforms for agricultural workers in the area.
