So David I dont say this lightly, I have seen a bunch of reactors and no question you are THE BEST. Let me tell you why. I see so many reactors who listen to a song and say I really liked that, dont forget to like and subscribe. Thats not what I came to hear. What did you like about it. What didnt you like about it. You however go the extra mile. You tell me what key it was in. How the fog was made. what its like to be on stage. All of this comes through andit shows. Nobody but you does an hour long reaction. Nobody. In fact you are the only person I would pay and have paid as a member of your patreon to hear your reactions. I have one tiny complaint and its that a lot of your reactions you say something and say that you know we are going to jump all over you for saying it. But I never see anyone jump all over you for your opinion. If I dtsagree with something I let you know but I think we are a pretty respectful bunch overall. so thats my rant. stay metal..

I love the visuals in this lyric video .. they do show them on the big screen behind them in the live performances too ... but it is studio audio and, much as I like it, the live is so much better.
On the vocals, again this is the studio recording and they are processed as always - maybe not as overdone as in previous albums, but yes they have messed with them and as always Su-metal's live vocals are so much better without all that (other than those two lines where it is a very deliberate choice).
Also, how often have we heard Su-metal channelling Snow White's step mother or Moametal quoting Shakespeare's witches from MacBeth?
The theme for this song is about the duality of realities, questioning whether the image in the mirror is the true reality, is that your real self or what you imagine to be real - there is a lot of inner turmoil and confusion and a lot of that is reflected (almost accidental pun🪞) in the frequent time changes.
Obviously I can tell when the beat is slower or faster etc, but I couldn't tell you whether it is quarter, half, full or double time, I just know what sounds good and works for me and this song has the Prog elements that I do appreciate.

"Mirror Mirror" is my favorite song from The Other ONE album and it's weird because it's not the kind of song I usually like. But I totally love and enjoy the use of those different drum patterns, that exquisite modulation during the pre-chorus (when they quote Shakespeare's MacBeth) and, of course, that nasty breakdown.
I agree that this studio version sounds vocally quite "flat" but we know that Su-metal sounds way better live and about those filtered parts they maintain them on a backing track even live. So it's basically a deliberate resource. It also feels a little too short to me... but there is a saying in my country that states: the good stuff if brief, twice good. 😁

Many fans find Periphery vibes on this song, i guess that's the structure on the heavy parts.
Also is funny you're asking for a longer version because of the time signatures switching back and forth, thing is KobaMetal did it with Tales Of The Destinies and The One (both were originally one song and later split in two parts), and iirc you didn't like TOTD (Dream Theater tribute) but you loved The One.
This song was part of the World Tour 2023, they didn't play it this year yet, in fact last setlist at Sick New World they didn't play one song from latest album, only METALI!! which is outside of it. Btw the girls did a mini interview at Rock Sound talking about Slipknot and looking for a new collab with them.
Anyway next May 23 is coming a new collab along with Electric Callboy called RATATA, they just released a teaser but no music yet. Kindly suggest not taking so long for a reaction, at least do it within the week or the month, so you won't lose the heat of the moment and views, just like they did with METALI!! feat Tom Morello and more recently with Leave It All Behind feat F.Hero and Bodyslam.

Agree with you on all points. Maybe the song length matches better/matches with the choreography. They have many different styles on the new album/performances. Maybe trying out a little bit of everything. MV/lyric is always good but we all know live is best. So the MV/lyric gets us ready/ hyped for the live.
I love your reaction as always. I'm a bit disappointed the requester chose the studio album lyric video though. This song did nothing for me until I heard it played live.
I feel kind of same that you do about the vocals. Ofcourse I only feel same with you about them when it comes to this studio recording you heard. Live Su absolutely kills it and it makes the song sound so much better. If you heard/saw the live version I would guess you would give the song 0.5-1 points more.
Agree that the song is too short. It's one of my favorites off of The Other One, but it really feels like a sample from a much longer song. Su's vocals often strike me as over processed in the studio and it makes no sense when anyone who has heard her sing live knows that she regularly kills it live. In songs like Kingslayer, I got what they were going for, but on their own music, it's just annoying. Will never stop loving them though. Can't wait to see what they do with Electric Callboy!
I completely agree with your analysis👊🏽⚡️I think the producers do a disservice to Babymetal when they over produce Su’s vocals. This is the primary reason most Babymetal fans prefer the live songs. She is perfect without the tweaking. Warts and all🦊🤘🏾
This is probably my favorite of their most recent songs, but I agree that each 'section' could've been longer/further developed. As a whole it kinda feels like samples of different songs.
Which ironically actually fits the feel and lyrics of the song which are supposed to reflect a state of existential confusion. I can only speculate though.
Great review as always DH! I know you typically don’t take lyrics into consideration, but in my opinion, it would justify the chaotic feel, to convey an unresolved inner struggle.
This song questions one’s identity: which is the real true-self? The reflection in the mirror or the “real” me?
I’m no expert of course, so maybe it’s all a coincidence… but then again, the FOX GOD works in mysterious ways 🤣.

This is a stretch, but the lyrics suggesting inner conflict reminds me of Tho Who's song: Can You See The Real Me, although that one deals with a multiple personality disorder. I guess the both songs can be relatable. 🤔
@@bonhzeppelin55 Beauty of Babymetal, I notice their lyrics are purposely vague at times to allow audience interpretation. As in, this song does not specify the “protagonist”, and the mirror can be taken as a metaphor, so have at it! Haha
I have never really enjoyed Su's 'tweaked' vocals. As with other BabyMetal songs, where Su's voice has been overlayed and auto tuned etc, once they are sung live, all that electronic nonsense to Su's voice has gone.
Mirror Mirror is one of the few BabyMetal songs that I am not fussed about. I don't 'skip' it but I don't press repeat either.

I always give them to you before watching the video because for me you are the best reactor on RUclips and you have earned it a long time ago, even when I don't agree with your opinion (almost never).
This song is fantastic, the video is beautiful and the only thing that makes me sad is that you haven't seen a live performance first (I don't have to explain why, we all know it).
I don't know if you still have a Babymetal song to react to, but it's always a pleasure to hear what you have to say about each one of them, I hope you continue doing so as long as there is new content from them!!

the thing you have to remember about official videos is most of the time they are studio audio not live like what you here on the cd. like all of their songs this song is better live. the studio version usually fine tunes all the sounds and it can take away from the vocals. still sounds good but it is better live.
I like your ideas for improving the song. It's really interesting instrumentally but it's never been a particular favourite from the album for me, and I've always put that down to overproduced vocals - I'm not great at spotting autotune-style pitch correction, but it was instantly obvious here. However, I think what you picked up on also plays a part. Ta!

It is what it is. Especially being Japanese. Japan has some of the most restrictive copyright laws in the world. That’s why Japanese reaction channels that has done BabyMetal videos have the videos blurred with no music. They’re just commenting on the video. They understand Amuse (Japanese companies) copyright policies.
@@TheBongReyes Amuse does not block audio unless it's from one or two forbidden (early) concerts.
Great analysis as usual Mr. Heretic! IMO Suzuka's voice is so clear & clean. Its almost too pure for Metal, if that makes any sense, they're truly a hybrid group//band though. Kawaii Metal is what they are, & that dichotomy continues to work well for them for the most part!

I’m surprised to see you so confused about this song, but honestly I am not as musically literate as you (which is why I love your reactions), and I never really “loved” the song but the breakdown and the thrash drum beats in the “mirror mirror” part really stuck out to me.
Now if I may speculate, lyrically this song is supposed to reflect a state of existential confusion. It remember watching Andrew Hartley’s video on this and he did a pretty good job speculating on the lyrics. So for me to see you so confused by it, I think BM made a successful song for that from a musical standpoint.

@@Hymnodic hence why I did mention he was speculating and I tend to lean in that same direction of philosophical interpretation because it’s what I personally relate to the most. He seems to be the only one in the RUclips space I can find who does any deep analysis behind the meaning of BM’s music like this. So I would not just write him off as “making stuff up” if no one else in the western fanbase is bothering to provide such content for people to think about. Also the fact that his wife is Japanese (not sure if she was native or first generation deal), he gets her view on any potential cultural meaning behind the music too; and he is a Shakespeare professor and this song straight up references Shakespeare so as far as I am concerned, the guy has good credentials to be tackling this subject. He would do a much better job than me, that is for damn sure.

Well given Amuze is a big company it's not surprising here. I hardly ever see Band-Maid videos blocked. With maybe the exception of Choose Me. However, that might be because of it's connection to Netflix Kate.
Where Band-Maid both appeared in & provided to the soundtrack. Copyright is a pain in my f*** ass & more then not. It doesn't help the artist that much. Just the corporate suits eating all the royalties. Which Babymetal sees very little if any benifit from.
Anyways great analysis as always but Mirror Mirror is my least favorite track on the new album. A bit counter to others here but let me explain. After seeing them in Vegas recently however. This song goes from just ok to extremely solid performance.
Along with their suprise performance with Bring Me The Horizon this past April also in Vegas at the Sick New World Festival. Which performance was brilliant & really drives home the message that they really are a band best experienced live!! 🤘🦊
