Based on real-life events and people, Buena Vista Social Club features many characters and lots of great Cuban music. It takes such skill to reflect music of a bygone era, even more to sound fresh and vibrant night after night for months at a time. Scaled down for the Tiny Desk, the show is no less magical.
Before it was a Broadway musical racking up Tony Award nominations, the Buena Vista Social Club was a second chance. After the Cuban Revolution, many of the country's beloved musicians were lost to time, but in 1996, an ensemble was formed to reclaim their spotlight. To tell their story, the musical goes back and forth between the 1940s and the recording sessions that produced a masterpiece.
After the band warms up the Tiny Desk crowd with "El Cuarto de Tula," we meet young versions of the central characters: Compay Segundo (Da'Von Moody), Ibrahim Ferrer (Wesley Wray) and Omara Portuondo (Isa Antonetti) - their harmonies shine together on "La Negra Tomasa." Antonetti takes on the bolero-son standard "Lágrimas Negras." We also meet the older version of Ferrer, played by Mel Semé, for "Candela." Marco Ramirez, who wrote the book for Buena Vista Social Club, is our emcee for this performance, guiding us through the story.
The secret sauce is, of course, the music. These are the foundational building blocks of what has made Cuban music so popular before and after the revolution in 1959. Some of the best musicians in NYC who have experience with classic Cuban music are in this production. Buena Vista Social Club is a living, breathing and deeply grooving homage to the era, the music and the island.

❤ maravillosos acordes ....tremendas voces...gracias espectacular lugar.🙌💐💃🫶🧜♂️
si, para poner paco amoroso 👎
It’s currently 8pm in China now. A year ago, my classmate from Chile introduced Buena Vista Social club to me because we have this habit of sharing the music we like to each other. Next month we’ll graduate from uni and part ways, but the music we’ve shared together will forever remain in my heart ❤
BEAUTIFUL ❤
And here's another Chilean guy reading from Sydney at 1:13 am. Music and this tiny desk somehow brought us together too. 🫶🏻
Another chilean here , been playing their songs since last year with my Uni Group cover band , love and pichula from the motherland cabros
Sharing music is without a doubt one of the prettiest love languages. ❤
Let’s make a community here too. What artist do you recomiendas?
Only 20 minutes? We need 2 hours of this minimum
Their Album runs an hour, you should give it a listen! ❤
No kidding
Go see the show baby
It makes me sad how so many of the real Buena Vista Social Club / Afro Cuban All Stars members are no longer with us today. RIP Compay Segundo, Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González, Pío Leiva, Guajiro, Cachaíto, Manuel Galbán, Puntillita, Angá. Seeing them live was one of the very best concert experiences of my entire life.
I was actually thinking the same, saw them live early 2000’s, was a great fan of Ibrahim Ferrer especially, and it’s so sad that we have lost a lot of them, glad the music goes on none the less
That's what the project was all about. Our kids will only know them through the albums, movies and stories and so we get to bring them to the water so to speak. I feel sooooo lucky to have been introduced to them.
It’s sadder they couldn’t even get singers who could pronounce Spanish properly. Sure they’re great singers but they lack “candela” if you know what I mean! It’s like watching a Hollywood movie and the Brown guys can barely speak Spanish. Only white people can fall for this lol
Lucky you.
Played this for my 94 year old Cuban grandpa in the garage the other day. He looked at me and said, "You always know how to make me cry". He proceeding to tap along to these hits. Thanks for sharing these magical tiny desk.
You should take him to see the play on Broadway .. he would love it
I made my Cuban grandfather cry too when I played him the CD many years ago.
Get the movie and the soundtrack for him. He will love it!
@Pituqatthat CD is fire!
I played the documentary for my gramps before he passed, he loved it. It brought him to life. RIP PIPO

Never Forget The OG's Of Buena Vista Social Club May All Of Them RIP And May Their Music Live On Forever!
Who are the ones on this video? I didn't realize that after all those deaths, the BSC continued. Ruben Gonzalez was by far my favorite, that piano playing, ufff!!!
@eternalshenanigans1 These are the cast of the Broadway show. None of these musicians played in the original Buena Vista Social Club. They carry the legacy, but @jey_Morales is 1000% correct in making sure the real musicians of Buena Vista Social Club are remembered.
Buena Vista Social Club is one of the greatest musical accomplishments of all-time. Calling it a world music record does it a disservice. it is pure music... worldly or otherwise. I am sad they didn't play Chan Chan which is my favorite song of the record.
Juan DeMarcos - el maestro!
Honor a quien honor merece.
Missing Ibrahim Ferrer and Compay Segundo, forever treasured.
Two unforgettable, unique voices for sure
Amazing voices 😢
I can't forget the moment in the movie when Omara Portuondo, overcome with emotion, weeps while singing "Chan Chan" with Ibrahim Ferrer. ❤🩹 So lucky to have their beautiful music.
Legends for sure
Y Europa ! 🩷🩷

Se tardaron en hacer este TD... VIVA CUBA LIBRE
@borjadln5088wow vine a este comentario a decir y los canarios! 🇮🇨👏🏼🤍✨ me ganaste!
Soy Mexicano y amo toda la musica Cubana, Viva Cuba!
Compartimos mucho cultural y musicalmente con nuestros hermanos cubanos, viva Mexico y cuba libre.
Viva!
I think a lot of people in Mexico prefer Cuban salsa. When I visited a dance club in CDMX, I confidently stated I knew how to dance salsa only to find out EVERYONE danced Cuban style. 😅(I learned from Puerto Ricans so I dance more of the 'line' style.)
Well done, Carl, a bit of empathy, still the best boxing podcast! 💪🏻
I have never clicked on a video so fast in my life.
Me too! ❤
Same
Me too😂
Así es!!!
SAME
Ibrahim Ferrer, Compay Segundo and Ruben Gonzalez are watching this, singing and playing now from the eternity
😭🥺
What a beautiful comment!
Valé!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
❤❤❤
Weepaaaaa.. voy yo
Así es amigo, la música es vida 🎉
😂 @mariarosa-o4s4y
Ouuuyeees me sumo a mí me pasó lo mismo
Lo que dijo es hermoso.
My father introducing me to the Buena Vista Social Club inspired me to go to Cuba as soon as it was legal (Obama administration) My mom, her bestie, & then bf had an amazing time. We visited the club & danced late into the night. I’m glad this show will introduce another generation & keep the memory & spirit of the original members alive
The Buena Vista Social Club is generous, passionate, intergenerational, simple, kind, ... IMMORTAL.
Long live Buena Vista and may the world continue to dance and sing.
I’m so happy to see Cuban music represented in Tiny Desk 🇨🇺
Viva Cuba!!!❤❤❤
No me esperaba ver a Buena Vista Social Club en un Tiny Desk, simplemente precioso.
yo tampoco
Born and raised in Liverpool England but thank god every day for my Spanish roots.
This style of Cuban-African music is beautiful and massively raising the bar.
WEPA!! Cuban Son con sabor. RIP Ibrahim Ferrer. Some of the best music in the world!🙏🏾
Cracksazo❤
if this tiny desk concert doesn't become a top 5, then I don't know anymore.
Top 3
Patria y Vida 🇨🇺🇨🇺💗💗

Socialismo o Muerte!!😅
@Biotik99 entonces mejor nos morimos
Super Viva Cuba🎉🇨🇺
This music is beyond words. It's pure heart
My late dad who passed away 2 years ago introduced me to Buena Vista Social Club, I must say he always showed me great music. He didn't make it to his 50s. To be watching new videos of this amazing group wrecks my heart because I can't help thinking of him. But it also brings me so much joy because it is his legacy on me. Thank you, dad. Your taste of music it was always exquisite. ❤

Your message deeply moved me. Music has such a profound way of carrying the love and memory of those we've lost, and your father's legacy clearly lives on through the joy Buena Vista Social Club still brings you. Thank you for sharing something so personal and beautiful. Wishing you continued comfort in every note and memory he left behind
First of all, I have to say that I am so very sorry for your loss. I wasn't planning on commenting on this video, but I resonated very deeply with your comment. Unfortunately, I have a very similar situation with losing my dad two years ago, an exquisite man with exquisite taste in music. I have been to several concerts in the years since his passing where I wish so badly that I could be sharing the experience with him, but then, I can't help but think that his presence is actually with me in the music. I truly believe that music has that ability to transcend time and space, connecting us with our ancestors and keeping memories alive for us. I clicked on the video today because I used to show my dad Tiny Desk videos and I know he would have enjoyed this one. I am so glad that I also found your comment and feel connected and not so alone
This is a beautiful testament to what it means to be human, thank you for sharing ❤❤❤❤❤
The songs of Buena Vista Social Club have always been a part of my life. I remember the first time I heard it, when I was probably seven or eight years old. One summer, in a small fishing village on the shores of the Mediterranean, in Almería, southern Spain. The local tycoon, who had connections in Havana, had brought a Cuban band to town to play at a beachside restaurant. It was nighttime, and we kids we were running around on the sand. I'll never forget watching the band from the shore, with the stars and the moon in the sky.
Thanks for painting that moment with words from your memory, great times. Amazing band, this one.
❤ Very cool!! Thanks for sharing that memory🥰
00:12 El Cuarto de Tula
06:46 La Negra Tomasa
12:22 Lágrimas Negras
15:52 Candela
Muchos gracias
Me quedé esperando Chan Chan 😢
@the_life_of_garridohubiera sido perfecto si tocan chan chan
🫡
Omara Portuondo, esa diosa....❤
I was there at Lincoln Center that night the original Buena Vista Social Club played . It was magical! People were dancing in the aisles. People were singing and clapping. The joy was palpable! I'd never been to a concert like that before. I'm glad they got the recognition they deserved before they passed. That album is perfection.
I'm so glad that people are keeping the legend alive! ❤
14:10 was insane. Had chills all over my body
¡Soy de Brasil y me encanta Buena Vista Social Club! ¡Viva Cuba! ¡Viva América Latina! ¡Mientras luchamos, cantamos y bailamos!
I'm brazilian. What an amazing experience. Sonoridade e musicalidade que chega na alma! Viva Cuba! Viva a America Latina!
VIVA!!!!!!!!!!!
Viva amigo
Que Viva Cuba !!
Tenho muito orgulho de ser latina!!!
Eddie Venegas (trombone) from the Los Hacheros Tiny Desk is gracing us again with his talent - this time with a Tony Award winning band. Well deserved! Let's goooooo 👏🇻🇪
we can’t let trumbone jazz die! ditching the banjo was inevitable, but the trombone must live on
I’m very lucky to have seen The Buena Vista Social Club perform with all original members at the Hollywood Bowl when I was a teenager! One of my core memories for sure!
So happy for the Broadway musical and the amazing musicians doing this project justice. Renesito Avich is a goat already, keeping the Cuban Tres alive and well!
Not jealous of you seeing BVSC live at all… no not at all…
They really did justice to the original Buena Vista Social Club. I absolutely love being Latino. Amor pa toda mi gente!!
Los mejores por siempre. 🙌
This is the best thing I have ever accidentally happened to see this year on RUclips.
Thank you, Ry Cooder, for bringing BVSC to the world. RIP Ibrahim Ferrer.
I didn't know Ry Cooder, who's album Chavez Ravine I absolutely adore, was the producer of BvSC. Live and learn. Merci ❤
Juan de Marcos Gonzalez played a huge part in making BVSC happen, worth watching the Wim Wenders doco to appreciate the effort that it took.
I from the Philippines been listening to Buena Vista since I was just 8 years old, my grandpa and my dad introduced me to this band for years! Now I am 32 and I am just crying when I saw the post from NPR on insta that the band is finally preforming on Tiny Desk! Truly Iconic and I am so grateful to witness and watch this outstanding performance!!! :) Thank you NPR Tiny Desk!!!
Let's give Cuban music the international recognition it deserves. Exquisite quality, love from Spain❤
Cuban music already have international recognition.
It deserves more!!!
🇨🇺 ❤
Love the move of not playing "Chan Chan" (as many would expect) and adding another song from their amazing repertoire instead. Great performance! BVDC's legacy is in good hands with this Broadway cast.
Kinda wanted to hear it but then heard it all and Chan Chan seemed way slower for this setup, glad it was this way
@chinitosan, exactly this. They did an outstanding homage there and chose a perfect set.
Still wanted to hear Chan Chan though :(
I wanted to hear it as well but I think I know the meaning.
I come from a Chilean family, and one of my most cherished memories is deeply connected to music. In the mid-1990s, my grandmother traveled to Cuba and had the chance to meet Buena Vista Social Club and Compay Segundo. When she returned to Chile, she brought back not only memories, but also the music that would shape our childhood. Since then, the melodies of that incredible band have been a constant presence in our home. Now, as I listen to their songs again, I can’t help but remember my grandmother and everything that music represents for us.
What an amazing performance to wake up to!!
RIP Ibrahim Ferrer
One of my favorite groups of all time! I adore them!!! ❤❤❤
God bless Cuba, this made my day!
they certainly are doing justice to the original buena vista legends... viva cuba!!

@louisemoraes5601es imposible juntarlos a todos
pero qué buena idea; Tiny Desk, hazlo posible
Whoever is behind Tiny Desk concept is an absolute genius! Gracias por traernos sabor antillano hoy ❤️🩹✨️
This is what makes America great again! Thank you NPR for being the amazing, world-class institution that you are, and have been not just with regard to how we understand the news and the world, but also the arts. The Tiny Desk concerts are outsized in their inter-galactic impact. Even the Pleidians and Arcturians tune in! You have brought to us so many global independent music favorites that don't always fall in line with mainstream, commercial tastes. This presentation was the closest thing to heaven for me today! Latin jazz and Afro Cuban music are huge contributions to global musical excellence. As an Indian immigrant to America, Buena Vista solidified and confirmed my lifelong affair with Latin jazz. Thanks for this piece of heaven. I am a reluctant traveler but this might cause me to consider heading to NY for this show.
I’m 45 yrs old, was introduced to Buena Vista by my aunt (rip) in my late teens, liked it but now I really see and appreciate that this is real música!
Saudades Cuba!! Te amuuu
Wow this is magnificent - late night here in New Zealand & this is the perfect back drop for my evening. Thank you everyone who bought us this
Waking up in Canada with a cup of coffee, agreed, perfect soundtrack!
Kiwi living in South Korea listening to this while I work.
8pm here in Australia.
I feel the exact same and I’m not even Cuban🥲❤️
Gracias Cuba por esta hermosa música ❤🇨🇺
You are welcome 🙏
Feliz!!!!!
Wow, Isa Antonetti 🎤🤩 Never heard of her before, don't understand what she is singing, but here I am, goosebumps and tears of joy - simply amazing voice
`The problem with great music is that it always ends too soon.
I saw them in Barcelona a few years ago and THE WHOLE THEATER was dancing to these masterpieces!! Easily my favourite band of all time ❤ ❤
Love this, I still play Buena Vista SC, never goes out of style.
14:44 Dios es hermosisimooooooooooooo ❤❤
Props to the sound tech. The Audio is A++++++++! Multiple acoustic instruments in a small corner. Crystal Clear down to the cowbell.
Salud y buena vida desde Buenos Airesss.
Música que prende candela 🔥!
Maestro David Oquendo on guitar and singing lead. So happy this scholar is getting his flowers. Master of the genre.
I was working in san francisco in 1999 when a freind told me about the documentary. Said it was the coolest thing he had ever seen, the music was amazing. I watched the documentary and the next day went out and bought the CD. I have listened to Buena Vista social Club for over 25 years now. One of the greatest albums of all time and if I could only have 5 albums for the rest of my life, this would be one of them.
Absolutamente 👏💪
Me too. Documentary and CD. Don't you just l💃
😍 💯🙌🏾
Also in Bay Area, remember watching the documentary and buying the CD and loving it. Was working at the time with outpatient dialysis patients and getting the CD for one of our Cuban patients.
I love Buena Vista Social club since highschool. Kudos to NPR team for bringing this absolute delight of a concert to life. Love from Turkey
EU AMO CLUB SOCIAL BUENA VISTA!
VIVA CUBAAAAA🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾😍
The Broadway show was awesome. Hoping they win every Tony they are nominated for. Thank you TDC! 👏
I can't wait to see it! Making a special trip to NYC for this show in a few weeks 🎉
Se extraña a Ibrahim, Omara, Compay, Pío Leyva, Eliades, Cachaito...❤🔥
Ruben Gonzalez
No better way to start the day, thank you NPR & Buena Vista Social Club❤
De los mejores Tiny Desk
Buena Vista, sempre incrível!! 😍❤️🔥
Buena Vista Social Club has always been one of my favorite albums, and honestly I never thought I'd see a performance live up to the recordings...but I just saw this in NYC and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen!!! The performances are electric and so full of energy and soul. I'm so glad this show has revived the music and brought it to the world stage yet again - well done! 🔥🎶👏
I was in NYC and saw this just last Friday on the 30th, and front row. This was an incredible tribute to an incredible story of culture, music, dance, and love. I loved every second of it. It was my first musical on Broadway. I can't imagine it getting any better. A solid, life memory.
Indeed incredible
These guys really capture the spirit of the original BVSC while also bringing their own style.
Como yo extraño a mi país cuba ❤
🔥Peace Love Harmonious Vibrations🔥
I’m Cuban living in the US… I feel the urgent need to show this to my American-born children!
