“True Detective” (season 1) is considered by some to be the greatest television series of all time… and it all started with this short story right here.
“Amorphous shadows seemed to lurk in the darker recesses of the weed-choked hollow and to flit as in some blasphemous ceremonial procession past the portals of the mouldering tombs in the hillside..” Keep up the good work and, as always, stay safe!
I have been listening to your videos every single day for about two weeks or so. The intro piano, and your voice is so calming. I look forward to every single video I put on. I was listening to another person on Spotify, I liked his narrating so much it was hard for me to get into listening to anyone else other than him. He does various stories particularly classic ones. After finding you, I have found my top two. Thank you for all you do Ian. This is an amazing channel. ❤
A lot of artists moved to Carcosa in the 80s and 90s. It was a pretty dire place to live at the time, but that’s artists for you; they’ll live wherever they can afford. Went back recently though, and it’s barely recognizable. Tall glass luxury apartment buildings and fancy condos. There’s a Starbucks on either side of every second block. On the street it’s all bankers, ad agency people and computer programmers. Some of them pushing triple-wide prams. You used to hear musicians rehearsing when you walked the streets in dim Carcosa. But these days, it’s fairly quiet except for the occasional person loudly yapping into their earbuds about "market penetration." Oh wait… I got Carcosa confused with Brooklyn for a moment, sorry.
Dunno if this was ever brought up, but could Ammi Pierce's character from _The Colour out of Space_ be an homage to Ambrose Bierce? Just a WAG (wild-ass guess).
If you ever fancy a bit of casual fun a recitation of sections from Bierce's 'Devil's Dictionary' delivered deadpan with your usual gravitas would make for very entertaining listening.
Again, I’m hoping for a remaster or retelling of The Seven Geases before/at Yuletide. Although every Christmas present has been brilliant from HB in the past so I guess we’ll see what Krampus brings us!
Again, I have no plans to rework that one - it’s a fairly recent recording, so there isn’t really anything different I could bring to it… I’d be interested to know why you’re asking?
I'm actually starting to skip these old ones, (not by the way under any circumstances to be confused with, "The Old Ones,") that have pretty much been done to death already and not just here on Horrorbabble, but I'm sure they'll be new to a lot of listeners and it all brings in advertising revenue which is definitely not be sniffed at.
It wasn't a complaint; I'm actually more than somewhat impressed by how well you've developed your hobby into a business, ("Honorable Enterprises,") and still developed it artistically as well and particularly by much of the new content. I continue wish you well of it and every success for the future.
@@HorrorBabble probably because I really like the story as a spur in the mythos history from the view of someone native to one of the other planes of existence. And recent is relative. It’s not going to stop me listening either way 😂😊
As just a fun mental exercise, let's suppose that this story and The King in Yellow both are set in the same continuity. (They are not.) Suppose they were, and Robert W. Chambers had been expanding upon this story. What insights can we draw about the King in Yellow, now that we know a little more about Carcosa? Carcosa at one time was a vibrant and mortal city, full of people living their daily lives. By the time this story is told, Carcosa has been reduced to barely a ruin, both buried and forgotten. What can this tell us about the events in Chamber's stories?
Check out the Carcosa Trail in the Arizona desert. The trail head (marked Carcosa Trail) is located just north of the Lake Pleasant Fire Station, heading up a small unnamed mountain. From the top, at night, you can hear the coyotes holing far out in the desert.
I surely thought Warren would make it this time...
😂
You fool..
You killed Warren.
You bastard!
He don't??? Damn...
The most underrated channel on RUclips. Never fails to deliver
Warren is just having a vacation. In lost Carcosa.
The perfect accompaniment to a quiet night chilling at home - a new Horrorbabble narration. Perfection 🖤🖤🖤🖤

Thank you! I appreciate that. :)
Just remembered this channel. Just in time for bed. Thanks for still going!
Wonderful! Didn't remember Bierce influencing Lovecraft's flowery prose to this degree... gotta listen to some more of his work.
Love your channel. The narration is the best. Great emotion. So good!

Short and sweet, great story telling as always
Thank you. Ambrose Bierce was an interesting author.
Keep 'em coming, baby 🤘
"Malevolent conspiracy of silent expectation" is a bar
This is the best channel on RUclips
U are great ian ❤
You never disappoint Mr. Gordon and Horror Babble. Very good. Excellent as always. A joy to listen to. Until next time.
Excellent, as ever.

Very possibly!
Dude, what a brain you have! And, you know how to use it...Read "Colour" decades ago and that NEVER crossed my mind..
Oh cool is this a new one?
Sick! You are the best Ian.
Keep up the great work.
It is!
Love Ambrose Bierce ❤
Thanks for the wonderful narration. Great story!
What a strange and esoteric tale. Not what I expected, but not bad.
I love the voicing of the narrator. 😯
Thank you
Awesome story and narration!
A classic!
Thanks!
we're all here listening to words written down in 1886, i wish my soul was more poetic but isnt that shit dope?
❤️🔥❤️🔥
Long Live the Ancient Dreams!
I read the title and carcosa and immediately thought king in yellow😊

Please read "Mog the Forgetful Cat" next!
Is there a connection here that I'm missing somehow?!
@@HorrorBabble No, it's just a sweet book I read to my daughter and you're the best reader out there. Haha.
I think I'll save it for my own daughter then!
Poor old Warren
Holy shit they killed Warren, you bastards
Just gonna catch up on The King in Yellow lore for Malevolent...
CANT LEAVE THE HOUSE. THEY ARE LOCKED IN THE EAST WING HURRY
I actually have an idea for a Final Fantasy antagonist based on Carcosa and Hastur.
I had no idea Carcosa pre-dated RWC. AB published this story 1886.
EVEN MY SHOES ARE IMPATIENT, CONSTANTLY NAGGING ABOUT VAN MELSEN..I WISH I HAD NEVER INFORMED THE PAIR OF EM ...IAN. 😵💫
I got here down the Signalis rabbit hole.
So, Ozymandias looks upon his works and weeps?
VAN MELSEN VAN MELSEN WHERE ART THOW NOW .....28..29 30 🕒 ❤
Alright alright. True Detective fans will get it lol
One wonders who the ghost is.....☄️💀🌌
Bierce had a mythos story??
I suppose you'd call it pre-mythos.
...
Warren is being a drama queen again.
Soo much delivered w soo little
