“Aged semillon and fish ‘n’ chips”… you’ve saved me - it was only a few weeks ago that I enjoyed a bottle of ‘98 Tyrrell’s Vat 1 with some takeaway fish ‘n’ chips, to the disdain of those around me, but I thought it was a great match!

Andrew Thomas is one of my favourite wineries in the Hunter. The Braemore is awesome. So great to see it get a review.

Hey Erin! Not too loud (everyone will want some)...in my opinion...Semillon is another of Australia's must have whites for the cellar. I was first turned on to Semillon at a TAFE wine tasting course when I just started working some mumble mumble years ago and soon after that by a collector who created a wine cellar under his house simply by stacking those hexagonal terracotta pipes between the concrete stumps that formed the foundation of his raised house. He had what looked like a honeycomb array of his favorite wines including Hunter Valley Semillon. I also had the opportunity to visit and I personally rate Tyrells as one of the most generous wine door, in terms of back vintages on tasting, I have visited in Australia. If I had a dollar for the number of times I have taken Semillon to a picnic, so I whole heartedly agree with all of your tasting experiences related in the video. A Semillon also has pride of place in my cellar as the oldest white, a 750ml bottle of De Bortoli Noble One from the 1981 vintage. I hope you consider doing a sweet white wine tasting as I consider it a great match with some cheeses and of course with Fois Gras Sushi which I began making after I got tired of paying $16USD a piece in San Francisco in the early 'Naughties. Here's to Australian sunshine, picnics and Semillon. Cheers!

Ha - you may be completely unsurprised to hear of the amount of people who have also repeated 'sh', when it comes to Semillon. Lots of closet fans around the place, although it sounds as though you have been sharing the good news. And good for you.

One of the old senior winemakers at McWilliams claims semillon goes into a dumb phase between 2 and 5 years. Worth keeping in mind when you buy these.

That's a bigger window than I had thought, but yes, they do go to 'sleep' for a while. I would say they really start to shine after five years. Good advice!

7-10 years of age my favourite window for Hunter Semillon. That said a 2004 Vat 1 had recently was fresh as a daisy.

I know it’s hard to decide what to review but Tyrrell’s Vat 1 is probably the premium semillon in Oz and all else is relative to it😋🙊

2015 is drinkable?! Thought that vintage was as popular as a pork bun at a bat mitzvah...
Could be wrong but pretty sure only the blind are enjoying the new mount pleasant bottle labels - was that the lovedale or the Maurice O'Shea? Can't tell from here. 😂
