Having been a 60's obsessive for many years my tastes have moved back to the 50's and even the 40's, however the best 60's stuff stays with me and I still love The Seeds. The hypnotic repetition in the rhythmic aspects reminds me of Bo Diddley, but they had an originality, and have a timelesness while being musically very much a snapshot of their era. Great band.
I thought that the Seeds were as good as the Beatles back then. I was 13 then, what did I know? I liked them so much that my sons middle name is Sky, from Sky Saxon. Rumors/stories= The Doors added a keyboard after attending a Seeds show. The Doors later opened for The Seeds. Gotta love Garage Rock!
Hadn`t heard of The Seeds when I was a teenager and was a mad fan of The Doors. When I came across The Seeds, I could see things that I thought The Doors had, `pinched`or..., `copied`.
With all due respect to the Seeds and even their influence on the Doors which I do not doubt, they didn't add keyboard due to them since they were the brainchild of Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek --their keyboard player!
Yeah, was just going to say this. Manzarek is a founding member, so unless he started playing keyboard because of the Seeds... Jeeze, he must have got good fast : P
At that time they were also.one of my top fave bands, especially as I was in LA, where they.got a LOT of airplay in Boss radio KHJ. But even now, especially as I just watched a video of the "top 50 shred metal guys" I think their sound rocks harder than all that BS metal cliches of nowadays. Dude, it's not just about "shredding" it's more about finding a groove, and really rocking it. I would rather hear the Seeds than all the metal bands!
Sky saxon was a close friend of mine . I became his guitar player. Along with jhin.ruben david walls and matthew.thise were some times. Would still be playing if he didnt pass. Miss you sky.
Wow that must have been a great experience. I remember hearing when he passed. Hope you are still playing! I am (playing drums) in a working band and we are probably the same age!
I was on lots of the dance shows in L.A. in the mid-60s. Including Casey Kasem's...this one. There is a dispute about Sky's age. The 10 year discrepancy is of concern, in that he can be born in 1937 to 1947 according to wiki, bios and other sources. I know age doesn't matter entirely. However.....for the record. I was 18 in 1966, in L.A., when The Seeds hit it big. I was at this show. I'd seen Sky Saxon around town....performing locally. Smash they did make! Sky Saxon was our age....he was no more than 19 while in these videos we see of him. It was a given, we could see in person, up close, he was our peer, NOT ten years older. You know....when you're a teen, you can tell someone ten years older from across the parking lot! All the 50 years I've loved The Seeds, I've never even remotely considered Saxon 10 years older than who he sang to, no one else did either. In spite of whatever verification there is, or needs to be found; I respectfully just want the information straight, as to well, he was such a brilliant YOUNG singer of the times. Great to understand what we're looking at on RUclips, for those new to discover him and his excellent band...The Seeds. Thank you
Bonnie, I think much is asked of us at times, for God needs those who can break the darkness. It doesn't feel like the luck of the draw, but it is a lesson in the kindness of moments and being able to challenge all that endeavors to break us. I think you can best picture yourself as a book with a priceless cover, and all of your experiences are the gold leaf which will linger saying, "I found my path," and that will be your stamp of knowledge for all of your days. Would I chose to be 65 with all my body failing; No, I am going to choose to get well within a couple of years. Meanwhile, Thanks to my Angels for, "Pinkhoneysuckle." It is a legacy for time after me. You are blessed with years of youth, so embrace them. Love, Barb
+Bonnie Speeg Another really great band is Venus Rising although there a new band that got started only a few years ago. I mean Venus Rising from the U.K. Not the U.S. version that only seems to play cover versions of other People's songs. Venus Rising from the U.K. plays mostly folk music and has all original songs. The lead singer's name is Sheena Bratt and she is one of My facebook friends. Venus Risings songs include Rainbow Child, Lazy Days, and Unity. You should look them up on youtube.
I know his family in Utah. He was born Richard Marsh in Salt Lake City, Utah on August 20th, 1946, same year as me. He was a member of the prominent and wealthy Mormon family named the Marshes, and was also related to the super wealthy Covey family. I used to hang with Al Covey, he was the largest realtor in the city and owned the #1 night club there named "The Collector" in downtown SLC. Sky used to spend some nights coming down off highs at the house that me and my homeboy and our girlfriends rented in Laurel Canyon in the early 1970s. He was a really nice person and could play the shit out a piano. RIP my friend.
This video came from a tape that didn't have audio. Pushin Too Hard was fine but this one was just noise. So I decided to fix it, I took Casey Casems voice from the previous clip and dropped in some applause. But when it came time to synch it up the LP version didn't sync up. So I tracked down the single version and then it worked. Sky is such a terrible lip syncher but I did the best I could with it.
So here is how it eventually made it around and up on youtube. I made a DVD copy of it and gave it to Sky in Las Vegas. He thanked me and said that anytime I wanted to come see another show I would be on his guest list. The next week I was in New Orleans and the Seeds were playing again. I asked the guitar player if they had seen the DVD that I edited.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news , even several years later, but , I'm glad to pass along some accurate information. I met Sky twice ,and he looked like he could have easily passed for late 60's. He was pretty out of it , but , he still had a deadpan sense of humor. People liked him ,because he had a gentle nature. I wish he could have lived long enough to really make a comeback bid , as Arthur Lee did , and Roky Erickson is still doing. He was a sweet heart. I mean that.
See the farmer on the other side of town He's always working hard 'til the sun goes down He's up every morning right on five, a wanting green seeds just to come alive, But he don't wear a no farm clothes, he's always using a rake and hoe, But his seeds are starting to grow, like a big stalk up through the sky He used to live in an apartment in a big old city With thick and priestly windows built right in it But he decided to move to a little tiny town He wanted to be a farmer all year round And on a country road where you can't see a thing He's got five acres filled little green things, he said He's working so hard all night and day Mr. Farmer let me watch your crops Mr. Farmer let me water your crops Mr. Farmer let me harvest your crops I want to have a dream come true I said a farmer, farmer, farmer I want to be just like you See the farmer a walking down town, always draws a crowd when he's around He's always wearing seedy clothes, he's shows them off wherever he goes You can spot him anywhere, got a bright pink thumb but he don't care, I said, he looks like something from a very bad dream Mr. Farmer let me watch your crops Mr. Farmer let me water your crops Mr. Farmer let me harvest your crops Mr. Farmer let me save your crops I said, a farmer, farmer, farmer
For a few years Sky changed his name to Sunlight Moses Gold, member of the Aquarian sect. Knew him for a few years on Oahu, he was out there but had a good heart as well as a gorgeous babe in hand.
He got way more attention that most LA musicians of the time...big obits everywhere. Amazed me considering he'd had one big and one not quite as big hit and tghen wandered into acide crazed obscurity.
You're right , in that he toured extensively ,and must have , as you said , packed them in , in LA . Maybe to say he did'nt make a proper comeback is an understatement on my part. He was basically banished from LA in the 80's (He was behaving very badly , by all accounts.), but a new audience accepted him , later. My friend saw him hanging out at a Damned show in Frisco , and no one else recognized him , until he joined the band onstage. HE STILL HAD IT , COULD HAVE BEEN BIGGER , FOR SURE.
I'm really diggin' on the guy with the black ponytail ribbon a la Mark Lindsay. I just can't get over a Mark Lindsay look no matter how old I get. I hope I never do.
Sky was known for being inconsistent. In Vegas , he killed 'em. Here in Chicago , someone who won't be ratted out got him high , or higher , and he was singing in keys not known to man ! Still , it was a fun show. Sky knew how to work the audience . He did look older than I said , but , he was thoroughly likeable , despite his delusions. I'll miss him. Rick Andridge passed , too. It's too bad a proper Seeds reunion was impossible (THERE WAS ONE IN '86, MINUS JAN SAVAGE.).
Punk music through and through. So gross ya had to like it. Odd, the guitarist, I don't know his name, he looks like Jack Black LOL, had a bit part in a movie called "The Babysitter" A Crown International Drive In Release (1968) He played in a band called the "Food",...' interesting how LA bands criss-crossed with Hollywood.
He had made a comebcak actually., He could have been huge, in fact, but he was crazier than Arthur Lee. But he certainly packed the joints in LA when he did his final comeback a few years before he split for good.
Oh come on, guy, it's just a dumb little rock';n'roll somg. Of course they're flat. Who cares, and who cared then. They were fun, they grooved in a dorky way, and the kids dug it. That good nusic/bad nusic distinction Ellington made just gives us all an excuse to say the music we dig is good nmusic and the music we don't dig is bad music...but that's nonsense. It's more a matter of poersonal taste than anything.
This song was all over AM Radio in "Boss Angeles" on "Boss Radio" 93 KHJ. As a kid these guys and the Raiders were my favorite group!
The template of garage rock

Thanks for planting some Seeds taday.

Yeah dude. The part when the keyboards get into a minor chord progression in this song sounds a lot like what The Doors will sound like
At that time they were also.one of my top fave bands, especially as I was in LA, where they.got a LOT of airplay in Boss radio KHJ.

Do you remember coming to my house up in Laurel Canyon in 1972? Me and Billy Kramenski were renting it so we could have gambling parties in it.
Wow that must have been a great experience. I remember hearing when he passed. Hope you are still playing! I am (playing drums) in a working band and we are probably the same age!
serious question: how much pot did you guys smoke? :)
The piano player taught me how to play piano!
Thanks for your efforts! The single version of this song is where it's at!
He had a heart of gold.
He was BeautifuL
Strawberry Alarm Clock did a cover version of this song.

I mean, he's most certainly 28-29 in this video, but I don't get why his age would matter. Ginsberg was older than the hippies by 20+ years

oh yeah, Shebang! I had forgotten all about that program LOL.
That keyboard fill half way through, sounds a lot like "Incense and Peppermints".

HELLO TO SKY SAXON FROM YOUR PAL FOREVER HOLLYWOOD JOE
You're right , in that he toured extensively ,and must have , as you said , packed them in , in LA . Maybe to say he did'nt make a proper comeback is an understatement on my part. He said yeah, and that Sky had left it behind in the hotel room but they grabbed it. They later compiled all the clips of the Seeds on TV and used it.
Sky grab that tambourine behind you!!!!
Pretty cool use of this song in the movie Almost Famous 😎
Yeah, even in a crap movie like that the song shines.
I'm really diggin' on the guy with the black ponytail ribbon a la Mark Lindsay. I just can't get over a Mark Lindsay look no matter how old I get. I hope I never do.
thanks
q grande carlitos bala!!
jamzzzz
What does he mean by "Pink Thumb"?
Did you dub in the 45 version, I can't find a clean 45 version.
I hope this is true..what a great story.
i am a farmer lol
They were not skilled musicians, BUT...they had a compelling sound and were totally original in their craft.
Define "skilled musicians", please.
@@caribman10 ok... able to maintain a solid tempo without speeding up; able to add nuance.
@@caribman10 I think you know. 🙂

Dude. Wrong thread, I'm sorry for your loss.
Ich bin auch ein Farmer, muss meine Mutanten züchten..........
....god, they sucked so bad I just love them.
Can someone tell me what type of keyboard he is playing?
Bruce Eckerd
Best guess is a Farfisa Compact or a Vox model. Left hand of Daryl Hooper played the bass line on a Wurlitzer.
Definitely looks like a Farfisa
💙💠I LOVE U SKY💋💙📿✌
It seem like' God gave them Pushin Too Hard' and that was it. One hit wonder.
Seeds were not a one hit wonder band. What about their early songs of 1966? pictures and designs, can't seem to....etc etc
Was that English?
