Hey Gerrit, passing San Cristobo you reminded me of the Patron Saint of travellers : Saint Christopher. He is mostly pictured with little baby Jesus on his shoulders crossing a creek just like the Oribio. The connection between travellers and water is easily made : both are kind of flowing through the landscape, mostly taking the easiest way, unstoppable because extremely flexible. And then I all of a sudden realised that you were, conscious or not, explaining the difference between travellers (hikers) and pilgrims. Hikers are like those drops that come down the slopes : they like to travel alone, finding their own way, fending for themselves, maybe afraid of loosing their identity in a crowded creek. But when they do, they become pilgrims, traveling alone-together, with the same sense for the wonders around them, some in a spiritual some in a religious way, but always open to transcendental experiences. Pilgrims are always hikers, hikers are not always pilgrims. You could even say 'Pilgrims are an esoteric club with a hiking problem'.
I was surprised that after all your Strapazen (beautiful German word for 'adventures') Nikolai (Diaries #9) and Ruusu (Diaries #13) are still keeping you company. I would have thought you lost all your original 'family' down the line.
Enjoy your last days on the road!

hello Berten, what a beautiful observation that really made me ponder things… i’ll have to get into it some more, there’s a lot there. thank you for this! As to Nick, Rusuu & others: we’ve all had our obstacles and hickups, and hence are more or less in the same rhythm - which, of course, is great 😊. I hope we can roll into Santiago together.

"All that we build are sandcastles, that give way to the tides of entropy." That, Gerrit, is poetry.

What a beautiful way to start my morning, walking to Samos. Another favorite day. Beautiful video, just beautiful. Thank you Gerrit for those 12 hours of patience to upload (as you were sleeping I hope)😍

thank you Danielle… very happy to hear you liked it! It was uploading from breakfast until late in the day actually.. Wi-Fi is often very slow, so I do it over cellular. But the files are about 3 GB, and I think the bent must get throttled when I’m roaming, otherwise this should be much much quicker. But it is as it is. The one I have uploaded this morning (only 6 hours, woop!) I was editing last night in bed. It was literally delirious. I kept falling asleep, couldn’t tell the colors apart anymore, everything looked off - but I’m hoping it makes a moderate amount of sense anyway 🥶😂🤣

This is why I never wear headphones. Listen to the silence, the bells, the birds, the cows, water and most of all the sound of walking. Sandcastles indeed!

The river at the end looks so inviting. Nothing beats soaking in a cool stream/river after a long hike on Camino...well, maybe the addition of a cold beer on the river bank would 😂

Entropy on a geologic timescale … yeah, right, that can all be observed on a Galician morning.
On my winter walk some years back I found these dripping and gurgling tiny water sources coming out of the path‘s wall frozen … millions of icicles everywhere. It was absolutely stunning.
But make no mistake, you picked the better season when the streams allow you to cool your feet. Glad you picked the route through Samos this time as it is so beautiful there. Buen Camino 😊

I could never do a cold Camino, I’m too chicken for that 😳 but yeah even in summer, this stuff is impressive. And yeah walking via Samos is so so worth it!

@@storiestellr Going in winter wasn’t my idea, really, but the only time when I could take 3 weeks off. A week or two are not enough for a Camino as in the first week the body has to adept, in week two one begins to get into the rhythm, and then it’s home again. Walking the whole thing in three weeks is out of the question, too. Pamplona to Santiago by bike, yes, but otherwise it’s always just sections. That can be amazing, too, of course, and also experiencing it at the off-season.
That’s also why it was such a great experience for me, as a one off, to cycle from Germany through lovely France all the way to Santiago … with only one rainy day.
You are very lucky to be able to do three long Caminos. So, make the most out of it while you can. 😊
