The fun and exhilaration of thrifting has truly dwindled a bit over the last few years. True I still thrift, but not with the same excitement as I used to, and now that the thrift stores are spilling over with so much non quality fast fashion, coupled with the fact that thrift stores in some places has greatly increased their prices, thrifting almost feels daunting and that makes me sad. The only good thing and the most important thing I get out of thrifting is knowing that the fact that I do so still helps to promote sustainability.

I agree that thrifting is not the same. I think with the surge of online thrifting and selling, the thrift stores are saturated with resellers who are very aggressive, which has also pretty much doubled the prices at most thrift stores. I cannot believe how all the shoes are $14-30 and it's almost impossible to find any clothes under $7 when the stores are just jam packed with stuff that they get for FREE. I love thrifting, but you're so right, it's lost a lot of its magic.

I’m in Australia and it feels the same. I feel like resellers and also exorbitant prices have really taken a lot of the joy out of thrifting. We still go, but you don’t find the treasures at great prices like you used to in the majority of stores unfortunately

I miss the fitting rooms portion of the thrift videos. Even if you don't get anything we still get to see what it looks like on, rather than just seeing it on a hanger. A lot of things changed since 2020.
As for trends, I rather see style videos. I wanna learn how to style the clothes I already own. And past videos of yours have definitely helped. ❤

I was so excited to go thrifting again when I was visiting friends in the states last year. But you're right, it's not the same. The store was packed, but without being able to try anything in it just wasn't worth it. So we gave up.
So glad the thrift stores here still have fitting rooms!!

Wow I completely agree about thrifting feeling different pre-Covid, and I actually went to three different thrift stores today. While shopping I had the thought in my mind that it isn’t as fun, clothing seems cheaply made these days, and more expensive…I see a lot of Shein and Lularoe 😅
But I’d still 100% rather shop secondhand where I can.

Yes! Thrifting has changed post covid.. My Mom and I are "lifer" thrift shoppers and we can tell a difference, especially in customer aggression. For example, one lady recently acted like she wanted to buy the shirt right off my Mom's back, lol. Oh and mid-thrift picnics are bomb.. we do that too.😁 As long as we don't forget the toothpicks!😂

The DVF dress is so nice. Totally agree about thrifting. You really have to search for the good deals now and higher quality items.

Ok, but that Freddie Mercury print at the first store! 🙌🏼 I agree with you, thrifting is different. For me it’s: 1. Insanely increased prices, 2. Soooo much SHEIN, and 3. Way less mid to plus size availability with the increase in “oversized” fashion and smaller-bodied people buying up more larger sizes. It’s not the same and I miss what it used to be. ETA: I’ve been thrifting for 20 years and I’ll continue to, it’s just different.

I agree. Since tiktok and covid thrifting has really been hyped up and has caused the prices to increase. I still love it,but it's magic has changed.😢

The main difference that's changed for thrifting where I am is the prices increased so much after COVID that I only shop sale days and it's pretty picked over.

Everything shot up in price after Covid here in Oregon. Goodwill consistently sells clothing brands from target for $19.99 or close to retail brand new. Every once in a while I get great deals but it’s not the same!

I’m in the OC and so far thrifting has been pretty enjoyable. I’ve found a couple places that are more curated and not too trendy which helped me. Also practice made perfect at least for me

I miss the dressing rooms, but one thrift store I shop does have the cutest dressing room…
I bought today thrifting a tierd skirt with price tags, i paid $4.79 and originally it was $89
I’m also obsessed with orange this summer

There isnt much that gets me more down while thrifting than 1. Seeing a cute piece but its Shein 2. Seeing a nwt piece but the thrift store price is higher 3. Rude shoppers/crowds
I have been enjoying consignment shops like platos closet, my sisters closet, and turnstyle the most lately. And they all have nice fitting rooms!
I absolutely love your linen dress. I say find it on Poshmark if its not your size, but you love it ❤ also SUPER appreciate the lack of trend videos! Personal style is timeless 🎉❤

Things seem alright in Chicago…for now. I don’t notice many resellers here (or even people my own age or younger most of the time). Definitely a ton of families using thrift stores for their literal original purpose (being thrifty). And while there are a lot of cheap pieces, there are also still a ton of super quality pieces, vintage pieces, etc. Maybe I’m just super lucky, but I’m able to find almost everything on my wish list. Even in Chicago, though, the prices have gotten a bit ridiculous. And I miss the fitting rooms at some stores. Although Goodwill still has fitting rooms open!

Hey Jess- come out toward Ventura county. Thrift stores aren’t as pricey or packed. Try Hope of the valley in Simi Valley and there are a couple Goodwills worth hitting as well. Cruising through Main Street in Ventura is more like LA ( 15:40 crowded and pricey) but it’s all on one street with lots of beach air and restaurants. A fun day with lots of inspo.

I totally agree. Thrifting pre-Covid and after COVID is vastly different. Even my mindset about it is different. I first started thrifting involuntarily for financial reasons. Eventually it transitioned to me thrifting solely for the sustainability aspect of it and luckily usually the prices were amazing. I found better quality pieces and was willing to pay the price for an item that I would for a brand new item, now I feel like I’m always fighting to find a deal. Everything is higher priced but lower quality. It’s ok tho bc I still find joy in it and can indulge and feel better about my shopping habits. But I overall feel less excited about the items I get and searching for them

  • @beth3535
    @beth3535 Год назад +2

Post-COVID it’s a different game, for sure. When I’ve commented the response focuses on program. The piece that’s missing is the community service and making clothing , furniture, and household items accessible to lower income people and families. That mission is being left behind, I think. So much so that prices are higher than people can find elsewhere new.

I love the waistcoat you were wearing, kinder inspired me to think of how I can style my denim waistcoat, I struggle with style sometimes and just always pair things with a t shirt and denim Jean's. I aim to dress a bit more girly, I wanna look pretty this year, I struggled with feeling pretty cus of my acne but been working on accepting it and thinking wear the damn clothes I love, and no one will care 😂😂😂 funny what our minds overthink, been over riding it recently, questioning the thoughts, it really started helping and stopping any bad thoughts by changing what I was thinking 😂😂 tapping sometimes helps

I agree. I lost my intense love for clothes thrifting when the fitting rooms stayed closed long after they could open them. Now my local thrift store only opens fitting rooms for certain hours and the staff are very suspicious/rude. I am large chested, petite, high waisted and plus size so between those kinds of proportions and the inconsistent sizing for women I have to try stuff on to make sure it works. Pre-pandemic I was thrifting weekly and now it's more like I only go for each season - so probably only once every few months.

Yes I agree thrifting has changed since Covid, but not necessarily bc of it. I think there are 3 main factors: 1) Thrifting being considered "environentally" and economically beneficial became the norm during/after Covid. 2) The influx of crap from sources like Temu.
    3) Rise of reselling.
I've thrifted for probably 30 years. I see so many young ppl which is great, but there's definitely more competition. Secondly, there are fewer and fewer higher quality items from previous decades and more unlabeled awful products. Then I find myself dodging all the ppl looking up comps on their phones.
    ppl reselling

The pink boots with all the Barbie vibes out there and the movie is just coming out, it going to be madness in pink for Halloween. I hate there no longer dressing rooms and the ability to really have a feeling for the items you bring home is really set up in the dressing room and it sad to bring something home and it doesn't feel like you envision. I have had signals of my body telling me you starving me because I am so tune into the hunt. I am liking the hack of wearing a skirt as a strapless dress it gives additional possibilities. Thanks for sharing and blessings to you and all in the days to come.

Thrifting for me isn't what it has been in years past, and what I've come to is that so many of the pieces are fast fashion. Why thrift fast fashion poor quality items when you can purchase them new for basically the same price on sale? There is the saving the environment reason, but I've personally started to learn more about fabrics and think it's better to find a style that works and wait for quality fabrics...which, are rarely at the thrift store. Maybe vintage/consignment shops are better?
