  • Strawberries across the state are waking up and it’s time to think fungicide spray programs. Once you determine that flowers are going to make through to being fruit, fungicide spray programs need to be initiated. The majority of all fruit rot that we see are due to pathogens infecting flowers, which means it is vital to protect these flowers to prevent losses.
Dr. Aaron Cato, Extension Specialist- Horticulture IPM, of the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service presents a talk about foliar fungicides on commercial strawberries in the Southeast.

Lime Sulfur works both as a preventative and curative. Preventative when dry, and curative when wet. Great to spray after rain, it penetrates the leaf killing bacterial and fungal spores. Also, it’s a great miticide. Can’t overuse it though, can stunt plant growth if used continually. Also, gets a little tricky in summer, will need to spray at night or when it’s cooler or rainy. Lastly, seedling don’t seem to like it from experience 😁

Is it safe to eat the berries that aren't affected by the actual mold if the entire patch has botrytis fruit rot? Or is the whole harvest bad even if some berries look healthy?

Fine to eat berries that aren't affected.
